Chapter 1503: Chapter 1503: Lu Family’s Great-Grandson 1

When Christine left, a small village at the foot of Xingan Ridge received a letter and a large parcel.

"Comrade Hu, your letter and parcel!" Seeing Hu Ping jogging outside, Xiaoliu, who managed the mail, shouted at the top of his lungs, "Sent from the Capital! Sent from the Capital!"

Hu Ping had previously worked at the forest station but was later transferred to the construction corps. After ten years of hard work, he had now become a cadre of some rank.

Though officially part of the corps, the name referred to it as a farm.

As soon as he heard it was sent from the Capital, Hu Ping immediately thought of Lu Jiang and his wife. He hurried over to sign for it and took it back to his residence. Their family home was near the farm, where their son, daughter-in-law, and daughter lived. His wife, Ma Cuixia, stayed with him at the farm.

"Did Comrade Lu Jiang’s family send us something again? We haven’t even sent out what we’ve prepared for them yet!"

Although they weren’t lacking food these years, the grain sent by the Lu Family during earlier difficult times had helped them tremendously. Over the years, they’d kept in touch, and every year they’d receive some rare goods.

Though they hadn’t met in person, the bond was deeply rooted.

Hu Ping opened the letter: "Lu Jiang is very busy, Qingxue sent this. She mentioned she made a foreign friend who gave her a good supply of overseas remittance coupons, and she asked if we need anything—if so, we can write to her, and she’ll buy it and mail it to us. This time, she’s sent us some Beijing-style pastries, a stack of fabric, and a large piece of Australian-imported bright red wool cloth, meant for our daughter to make a coat for her wedding!"

Ma Cuixia slapped her thigh. "We have to thank her properly; she’s thought everything through so thoughtfully, and what good timing—the wedding’s on the twenty-fourth of the twelfth month, less than a month away. Let me see what kind of imported wool this is."

When they opened the parcel, the couple was stunned.

"It’s so beautiful, so red, and so soft to touch. Our daughter will definitely love it!" Ma Cuixia’s coarse fingers brushed it twice before pulling back quickly. "This material is expensive; we’re truly indebted!"

They didn’t have imported wool fabric locally, but they had seen domestically produced wool cloth—also quite pricey.

Expensive as it was, the colors were usually black, gray, or navy blue—not as bright as this.

For weddings, wearing red and green was the tradition—that green, being military green.

Hu Ping didn’t dwell on the ginseng, wild game, and mink he’d sent to the Lu Family; instead, he remembered their kindness toward his family. After some thought, he said, "Later, I’ll go home with you to organize things and send the wild game and dried goods we’ve prepared for them. I’ve heard it’s not easy to get meat in the city—unlike us, who rely on the mountains and water here. Also, let’s send Qingxue a hundred yuan to trouble her into buying a Shanghai wristwatch for our daughter. Together with the sewing machine, bicycle, and radio the in-laws are contributing, the ’Three Turns and One Sound’ will be complete."

Hu Ping’s family was well-off, and the in-laws weren’t lacking either, but acquiring the ’Three Turns and One Sound’ items was tricky. After months of effort, they had only managed to get tickets for the sewing machine and assembled versions of ticketless radios and bicycles, but there wasn’t even a trace of a watch ticket.

Ma Cuixia responded with a nod, took out a bag of candy and a bag of preserved fruits from the parcel, and carefully rewrapped the rest with particular care.

"Let’s divide and conquer. You take the parcel home while I visit my mother’s side of the family. My brothers and nephews have secretly brought back lots of good things from the deep forests and woods. Just the other day, they caught a deer and several snow rabbits—I’ll ask for some to send over together."

The Lu Jiang couple had been sending things to them for so many years that even her brothers back home had benefitted from it. Ma Cuixia felt justified in asking.

Of course, she’d pay them—she wouldn’t take advantage of her brothers.
