Chapter 1333: Chapter 1333: Feeling Cherished and Startled 2
Bringing up the events from ten years ago still sends shivers down the spines of the Guan Cheng brothers and Lu Tianzhi.
The scene of countless starving bodies scattered across the fields remains vividly engraved in their memories. If it weren’t for Feng Qingxue, would they have grown up so healthy and robust, towering over most people by a head or two under sufficient nutrition?
Reflecting on the past, Lu Tianzhi sincerely said, "I’m so grateful I had my aunt."
The aunt had always been incredible, and in comparison, Uncle seemed almost inadequate.
Noticing the expression in his nephew’s eyes and the meaning it conveyed, Lu Jiang touched his nose and thought, okay, he also admitted that his wife was indeed the more formidable one, meritorious in two lifetimes.
If it weren’t for her merit in two lifetimes, how could they possess such a miraculous space?
Hours passed in a flash, and the group, following the flow of people, disembarked from the train and headed straight to the guesthouse to settle in first. This was Xibao’s idea; they had to stay near the train station. For dinner, they resolved to eat at a state-run restaurant nearby, one bowl of meat-filled dumplings per person, one to four per pound.
Compared to ten years ago, the supply of goods was now somewhat better, and nice things were common in state-run restaurants.
After dinner, Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue, leaving behind their security officer and the Guan Cheng brothers to watch over the sleeping triplets, Xibao and Fubao, headed straight for the nearby black market.
The train station was teeming with people, and the black market, being the largest, had long been thriving.
As evening fell, many who dared not appear during the day would show up.
Lu Jiang was not in uniform, and armed to the teeth, each carried a basket on their back filled with ample food supplies. With Spring Festival approaching, many people didn’t want money; they only wished to buy New Year’s goods.
No sooner had they stepped into the black market than Feng Qingxue’s sharp eyes spotted Jin Hongjun’s figure.
A woman in her fifties, failing to come to terms with someone, sighed and walked away, her spirits low and gloomy.
Feng Qingxue pulled Lu Jiang aside into a corner and whispered to him about the fleeting encounter between Jin Hongjun and her mother, "It seems she’s run into some trouble. What do you think we should do to help her?"
"The last thing you want in a black market is to run into someone you know," Lu Jiang whispered back.
"Yes, our identities are not ordinary, and if people know we often visit the black market, it wouldn’t cast us in a good light." Feng Qingxue frowned slightly. "You go and see what she needs. After all, she hasn’t seen you, and we’re fully armed, with most of our faces covered. I bet she wouldn’t recognize me even if she were standing face to face with me, if I didn’t speak."
Lu Jiang gave it some thought then told his wife to wait where she was, and approached Jin Hongjun, lowering his voice and disguising it, "Need any grain? Any scarce supplies?"
Jin Hongjun’s eyes lit up as she asked in a quiet voice, "Got any eggs? Brown sugar? New Year’s goods?"
Seeing Lu Jiang nod slightly, she hesitated for a moment, her face turning red, "But, I don’t have enough money, just a few old things. Would you be willing to trade, comrade?"
"Let’s go," said Lu Jiang, dropping the statement and walking away.
He reunited with his wife and they walked along the road to a secluded small alley, with Jin Hongjun quickly following.
"My daughter-in-law is in her confinement period, and it’s hard to buy brown sugar and eggs near the New Year since everyone reserves their rations for their own family celebrations or visiting relatives. I have no choice but to try my luck in the black market every day." In the darkness, Jin Hongjun’s face was flushed with heat. First, she took out a handful of assorted small change from her pocket, then she pulled out a box from her basket.
She opened the box, and realizing that the other party couldn’t see well in the dim night, she shone a flashlight inside the box. Feng Qingxue’s gaze was instantly captivated by a pair of jade lion paperweights.
Once she turned off the flashlight, Feng Qingxue nodded and took out eggs, brown sugar, white flour, and two strips of cured meat from her basket, one by one.
