Chapter 1329: Chapter 1329: Radish Meatballs 4

Feng Qingxue’s name contained the character for snow, and she herself was very fond of snow.

Pure white snow, light and beautiful.

However, after she transmigrated, she never showed her love for it because snowy days meant hard times for the common people. Without adequate bedding and clothing to keep out the cold, without enough food and firewood to get through winter, despite the saying that a heavy snow promises a good harvest, most of the impoverished population disliked the arrival of the snowy days.

When Lu Jiang accompanied Feng Qingxue for a walk with an umbrella, the family compound was almost deserted.

Of course, that referred to the area of the compound, the space outside of everyone’s homes, because everyone was warming up inside. Without an emergency, no one would choose to go out in the snow like they did.

Feng Qingxue noticed that the family compound had almost no trees and felt it was a pity.

"How nice it would be to plant some trees? In the scorching summer heat, the shade of green trees would look extremely beautiful." During hot days, one could completely sit under the tree and enjoy the cool, which was the most beautiful scene in summer.

That’s how the Wanglou Brigade was now, with green hills and clear waters, and shaded trees every summer.

Lu Jiang said in a low voice, "Didn’t you see the tree stumps in our yard? There used to be trees, but they were all cut down in the past couple of years. Who has the leisure to plant more? The ones planted aren’t enough to make up for those cut down. Last year, when I went to the Capital for a meeting, I followed the elders to West Mountain Compound. The trees cut down there were truly a pity; there were many walnut trees planted, not one was left."

This movement that would not end for years was to blame, Feng Qingxue sighed.

The wind grew fiercer and the snow denser.

Just as Lu Jiang was about to remind his wife to go home to avoid the cold, Feng Qingxue suddenly said, "Ajiang, look!"

Lu Jiang looked in the direction she was pointing and saw a little girl struggling to carry a bucket of water towards a rather desolate bungalow.

The little girl seemed to be about seven or eight years old, dressed in ragged clothes, with a pale and thin face.

"Who is that?" Lu Jiang frowned.

"I heard from Sister Xiaocui that Zheng Nan, the brigade commander’s daughter, lives with him as part of the military family. Her name is Zheng Lingling; she usually washes clothes and cooks by herself. I don’t know if that’s her." Feng Qingxue, holding his hand, hastened their steps towards the little girl, called out "Zheng Lingling," and the girl looked up abruptly, her dark and thin face set with a pair of clear almond eyes.

Lu Jiang quickly took the bucket she was carrying, "Where’s your dad?"

Zheng Lingling bit her lower lip and said softly, "Dad has gone on a mission."

Lu Jiang’s frown deepened, "So you’re fetching water by yourself? Braving the snow to fetch water?"

"I want to cook, there’s no water at home."

Feng Qingxue said to Lu Jiang, "Go fetch a few buckets of water, fill all the water containers in her house, and then see what else is needed at home and bring them over. I’ll take her to our home for lunch."

Zheng Lingling hurriedly gestured with her hands, "I can cook by myself, Auntie."

Feng Qingxue held her hand, "Cooking by yourself is too wasteful for the fire, and I suspect the fire in your coal ball stove has probably gone out, right? We had a lot of food left over from lunch at our home; you can help us with that."

Zheng Lingling, being a child after all, was quickly persuaded by Feng Qingxue’s simple and direct words and went with her.

Feng Qingxue heated up some cabbage soup for her and served her a bowl of meatballs.

Zheng Lingling shyly looked at the group of children who were surrounding and watching her, clutching the front of her clothes nervously.

"Eat up, go ahead and eat. They are all children from our family; the younger ones you can call brothers and sisters, and the older ones you can call brothers." Feng Qingxue wiped her hands with a wet towel and then put chopsticks in her hand, "By the way, Lingling, how old are you this year?"
