Chapter 1292: Chapter 1292 Transfer to the Capital 1
This summer, frequent rains have kept the reservoir levels consistently high.
Even after Wang Xiaoguang’s close call with drowning, nothing could dampen everyone’s enthusiasm for fishing.
Seizing the rare opportunity for a feast, who wouldn’t cherish it? After repairing the nylon nets, Guan Cheng, Lu Tianzhi, and Brother Guan Yu would take to the water whenever they had a moment, trying to get ahead of the morning fishing rush or after work in the evening. Although the catch wasn’t as plentiful as at the beginning due to the sheer number of people fishing, they still managed to catch quite a few large and small fish, thanks to the convenience of the nets, and the courtyard was filled with the smell of fish.
Since the silver carp and small crucian carp were small and full of bones, which made them inconvenient to eat when cooked normally, Feng Qingxue coated them in batter and deep-fried them until they were golden and crispy, a dish both the elderly and children loved.
Although fish was on the menu every day, no one felt tired of eating it.
Any extra fish that could not be eaten that day were cleaned by Feng Qingxue and preserved in salt in jars for consumption the following day.
Having fish to eat did not alleviate everyone’s anxiety about the flooding. The corn seedlings had turned yellow from being submerged, and there was concern that the sweet potatoes would rot in the ground before growing big enough to harvest, though the rice paddies were faring somewhat better.
Wang Zhenguo and the team leaders arranged for people to dig trenches every day to drain the water accumulating in the fields.
The rain continued, though it had lessened in intensity.
The light rain was persistent, making the inside of the houses very humid.
Feng Qingxue couldn’t help but miss her life in the army, where the living conditions were at least dry.
"Mommy?" Zhuangzhuang sat on her lap, touching her face with his little hands and then promptly pressing two kisses onto it, his eyes and brows curved into a smile, "Mommy, drink milkies!"
Zhuangzhuang had been weaned at the age of one year and two months because Feng Qingxue had no more milk.
So now he drank formula milk. After trying several flavors, it turned out that the only one he would drink was the most expensive imported formula available in the space.
After Feng Qingxue prepared the formula for him, he would obediently hold the bottle and sit in his chair, tilting his head back to drink leisurely, looking adorably cute, which immediately brought a bright smile to Zhou Zhou’s face as he entered the door.
"Zhou Zhou? How come you have the time to visit on a rainy day? You should read more when you have the time at home." Feng Qingxue said while greeting him.
Zhou Zhou pursed his lips, "The college entrance exam doesn’t exist anymore."
Feng Qingxue smiled slightly, "Who says you read just for the college entrance exam? You read to gain understanding. You’re still young; trust me, reading more books is definitely the right choice. You’re only fifteen, you shouldn’t have started high school yet, right?"
Zhou Zhou nodded slightly, "I’ve just finished middle school."
Having had to leave school to go to the countryside right after middle school was quite pitiable. Wang Zhenguo had said that other sent-down youths received books, letters, and packages from home every now and then, and Xing Yushan had even received money and tickets sent by his brother, but Zhou Zhou had never received any warmth from his family.
Feng Qingxue sighed softly, "I’ll find you some high school textbooks later, and you can study on your own during the farming off-season. Didn’t the old leader say it? Never fight an unprepared battle. You’re all still young; there are millions of children across the country who have had to stop their schooling early like you have. Who knows if the country might make other arrangements for you in the future."
"Really?" Zhou Zhou’s heart stirred, and he widened his watery eyes.
Feng Qingxue couldn’t help admiring his eyes; they were exceptionally beautiful, soft and constantly brimming with a limpid autumnal depth, every blink and glance, devoid of tears, appeared more moving than any tear could.
"Young people are the future of the country; how could it not have plans for you? Keep up with your studies, and you won’t have regrets."
Encouraged by Feng Qingxue’s words, Zhou Zhou replied happily, "Thank you, Qingxue. I will study hard with Huihui. She’s a high school student, and whenever I encounter something I don’t understand, I can ask her for advice."
