Chapter 1283: Chapter 1283: Don’t Judge by Appearance 3
Guan Cheng had to continue catching cicadas, so he had no choice but to go home for a flashlight.
When he arrived home, Zhou Zhou was playing with Zhuangzhuang, and Xiongxiong was pinching his nose, sniffing around and saying, "Stinky, stinky!"
Zhou Zhou’s face turned red all of a sudden, as red as a tomato.
She had already made a special trip to the riverside to scrub the soles of her shoes with grass, but there was still a bit of a stink.
"I... it wasn’t on purpose," Zhou Zhou said in a fluster, "Does it really smell that bad?"
Xiongxiong nodded emphatically, "Stinky!"
"Zhou Zhou, don’t listen to his nonsense, kids don’t know squat!" Guan Cheng said as he stepped into the living room, glancing around, "Where’s my aunt? Why are you the only one here looking after Zhuangzhuang and Xiongxiong?"
Xiongxiong was too mischievous, hard to manage.
Zhou Zhou swallowed and said softly, "Fubao and Dundun are going to sleep, Qingxue went inside to coax them to bed, so she asked me to help look after the two babies for a bit."
Just a few minutes later, Guan Cheng returned, his movements swift.
Guan Cheng nodded, lifted Xiongxiong up and asked, "Your sister and brother are asleep, why aren’t you sleeping?"
Xiongxiong responded by slapping his face with her little hands, giggling nonstop.
At that moment, Feng Qingxue came out from the east room, "What happened? Zhou Zhou came back with your flashlight, and before she could say much, Fubao and Dundun started fussing about sleeping. I didn’t have a chance to ask."
Zhou Zhou was just about to answer, but Guan Cheng beat her to it.
"Nothing much. I went out to find cicadas, and I saw her wandering around alone in the dark, which is too unsafe. So I lent her the flashlight and told her to come find my aunt," explained Guan Cheng.
Zhou Zhou glanced at him gratefully upon hearing this.
"I see, you did the right thing, Acheng," Feng Qingxue said, although she knew there must be more to it; she didn’t probe, showing the utmost respect for those involved, and only said to Zhou Zhou, "It’s fine during daylight, but you shouldn’t go out alone after dark. You used to accompany Zheng Huihui all the time. How come she didn’t come with you this time?"
Mentioning this made Zhou Zhou look a bit upset as she said softly, "I came out with Wang Huan, thinking of catching some Golden Cicadas to eat. She had the flashlight, but when I turned around, she was gone."
Wang Huan? Feng Qingxue and Guan Cheng thought for a moment, she was the youth from the Capital with a round face, yes, they remembered her.
Guan Cheng said solemnly, "I’ll go find Tianzhi and Ayu, and catch some cicadas along the way. When we come back, we’ll let Tianzhi and Ayu watch the kids. My aunt and I will escort you back to the commune. Just say you couldn’t find Wang Huan and came straight to my house to look for my aunt. Our house is closer to the woods, so no one will suspect anything."
"Thank you!" Zhou Zhou’s eyes moistened.
But before they had a chance to escort Zhou Zhou back, they heard a burst of uproarious noise outside.
Feng Qingxue held Zhou Zhou back and stepped out the door, faintly making out a group of people approaching, calling out Zhou Zhou’s name. They reached the doorway of their house, where Wang Dachun stopped and said, "Qingxue, have you seen Zhou Zhou? That girl vanished out of thin air."
"What’s going on?" Feng Qingxue asked calmly.
"It’s all my fault!" Wang Huan wailed, "I was out with Zhou Zhou catching Golden Cicadas, and when I turned around for just a second, she disappeared. I called for her all over the grove and the fields, and even asked several other youths to help look, but we couldn’t find her. We were worried something had happened to her, so we had to inform the brigade leader and mobilize everyone to search."
...These past few days I’ve been suffering from headaches due to lack of sleep, only managing three or four hours a night. I can’t concentrate on writing, so for the sake of my health, this is all for today’s update. I’ll add more when I’ve recovered.
