Chapter 1227: Chapter 1227: Long Stay at the Old Home 1

As he passed by the Lu Family’s place, Wang Zhengguo called upon a few brothers from Guan Cheng.

Lu father picked up the things that Feng Qingxue had entrusted to him to bring to Wang Zhengguo’s family and said to Wang Zhengguo, "There’s also Xiaoyun, the son of Ajiang’s comrade, called Zhao Xiaoyun. There won’t be a train heading southeast for another three days, so I invited him to stay with us for a few days."

"Bring them all, bring them all on," Wang Zhengguo had Miao Fengqin make plenty of food.

That being said, the appetites of the men were by no means small. What they could eat in one meal would be enough for Wang Zhengguo and his wife for several days.

Guan Cheng and his two younger brothers brought the steamed buns from their home, bearing them with a sheepish grin under Wang Zhengguo’s displeased gaze, "It’s hot weather, they would spoil if we kept them any longer, surely you wouldn’t want us to eat spoiled buns, right?"

It was then that Wang Zhengguo gave in.

Miao Fengqin was most enthusiastic about Xibao, her eyes lighting up when she saw him.

"Xibao, Xibao, how about you come to live at your auntie grandma’s house and not leave?" Miao Fengqin kept filling Xibao’s plate with fish, choosing snakehead fish because it was boneless.

Xibao enjoyed big mouthfuls, "Auntie grandma, you’re so nice, I really love fish. It’s just that we don’t have it in the army."

It wasn’t exactly that there was none, but rather that it was rare. Having lived in the army for so long, he hardly ever saw fish.

Although Feng Qingxue had plenty of fish and shrimp in her space, there was no reason to take them out. Meat could be mixed with the meat they bought, and only when Lu Jiang was on a mission or that comrade was on a mission and passed by a lake to catch some fish and bring them back, could Xibao and Fubao savor the taste.

Hearing this, Miao Fengqin immediately said, "If you like it, eat more," and then turned to Dachun to clandestinely catch more fish.

Wang Dachun might not be good at many things, but he was skilled at catching fish.

"Thank you, auntie grandma. Auntie grandma, eat up, if you don’t, Xibao will finish everything." Xibao, with his cheeks bulging, didn’t let it hinder his sweet talk, "Auntie grandma, actually, what I like most is you."

Miao Fengqin fed Little Douzi a mouthful of fish and turned to smile, "Then stay to keep auntie grandma company."

Everyone waited for Xibao’s response—would he stay or not?

Who knew that Xibao would naturally say, "Grandpa needs me, he needs Xibao to keep him company!"

Everybody burst into laughter.

"Xibao is so clever!" Zhao Xiaoyun couldn’t help but remark. The frequent compliments about Xibao being clever were no polite statements, for he noticed how quick-witted Xibao was and how easily he charmed everyone. His penmanship was so good that even Zhao Xiaoyun was envious.

Although Zhao Xiaoyun was ten years older than Xibao, his handwriting was described by his grandparents as ’chicken scratch,’ which gives an idea of its quality.

Miao Fengqin called out to Zhao Xiaoyun, "You’re Ajiang’s comrade’s child, just like our own. Don’t be shy, have some fish, eat up!"

"Thank you, auntie grandma." Zhao Xiaoyun followed Xibao’s lead, delighting Miao Fengqin immensely.

Zhao Xiaoyun wasn’t exceptionally handsome, but his features were endearing.

After a full meal, as it was almost completely dark, everyone went their separate ways.

Lu father asked Guan Cheng to make sure Zhao Xiaoyun rested well at their home, while he himself took Xibao to visit the old people who had been sent down to the countryside. As soon as they saw Xibao, they all put down their rice bowls.

Looking at the wild vegetable soup in the bowl and the wild vegetable steamed corn bread in the bamboo basket, Lu father’s expression turned somewhat grim.

"Didn’t I tell you? There’s quite a bit of grain hidden in the cellar under my cowshed, it’s all sealed up tight, not a single bit spoiled. Just take out a sack every ten days or half a month, and it’s enough for you, no need to pinch pennies like this."

Xibao, pulled to her side by Wen Ruyu, peered into the bowl, "No meat!"

"How can there be meat except for holidays and festivals?" Wen Ruyu chuckled before telling Lu father, "We old folks didn’t bother you at all. We would never rely on wild vegetables to deceive outsiders. Even the locals can’t have vegetables half the year and grains the other half. If we don’t show up among the masses digging up wild vegetables, wouldn’t it arouse suspicion? Don’t worry, we won’t shortchange ourselves."
