Chapter 1222: Chapter 1222: Picking Up Xibao 9
Zhao Xiaoyun had scheduled his departure for two days later. He would first take a bus to Huaibei City, then head southeast.
His grandmother had already returned to the Southwest Military Region from their ancestral home, so he didn’t need to stop there mid-journey.
Upon hearing this news, as they waited for Lu Jiang to return home that evening, Lu’s father, without time to execute his revenge on Lu Zhao’ai, said to Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue, "Tell Xiaoyun tomorrow that Xibao and I will join him on the bus. It’ll save you the trouble of having to drive us to the train station twice."
"So soon?" Feng Qingxue was taken by surprise.
Lu’s father spoke in a low voice, "Your Third Grandpa isn’t doing well mentally. He keeps mentioning Xibao, saying that ever since you all left last year, the heavens have stopped favoring us. Although our autumn harvest wasn’t bad, it was just enough to distribute the rations, with almost no reserves left. With summer harvest approaching in a month or so, your Third Grandpa worries that if heavens are angered, it might rain during the harvest, which could lead to reduced crop yields."
Feng Qingxue helplessly responded, "Dad, it really has nothing to do with Xibao. He doesn’t have that much influence with heaven."
"Not that much influence? If he doesn’t, then why do you have Zhuangzhuang wearing Xibao’s old clothes, while Dundun and Xiongxiong sometimes wear new ones, and sometimes those of Fubao’s. You never see Xibao’s old clothes on them, do you?" Lu’s father pointed out the obvious distinction among the triplets and frowned at the mention of Xiongxiong’s nickname, "I remember we named him ’Xiong’ for hero, ’Xiong’ as in mighty and powerful. Xiongxiong sounds so unpleasant, how did you pick such a name? There are so many nicer nicknames."
Feng Qingxue coughed and looked up at the ceiling.
"It’s just a nickname. What does it matter if it’s pleasant or not? We almost named him ’Caibao’ (Treasure)!" Lu Jiang argued with conviction, then promptly asked, "How is Third Grandpa doing? What does Guan Cheng say?"
"It’s just that he’s getting on in years, you know how it is; his energy isn’t what it used to be. Before coming here, I brought some rice and flour for him to have his meals cooked separately." The Lu family was quite prolific, but they would trade their fine grains for coarse ones every year. Even so, the large family, during the slack farming season, dared not to eat their fill twice a day; naturally, there was no fine grain at home.
After hearing this, both Lu Jiang and Feng Qingxue sighed together.
"Everyone says that Xibao has good fortune and luck. Dad, when you take Xibao home, let Third Grandpa rub off some of that luck, so he may live a longer and more prosperous life. If Third Grandpa really gets better, don’t let him forget about Xibao," Feng Qingxue said outwardly, but deep down she was reluctant to leave her child. "When the triplets are a bit older and Zhuangzhuang’s health improves, let Acheng come to take us home to stay for a while."
She had been discharged from the military and didn’t need to stay on base every day anymore.
Lu’s father chuckled, "Once you all come back, the house will be bustling. When I was leaving, so many people asked me to take a good look at the triplets and to tell them about it when I come back. In Wanglou Brigade, we’ve never had triplets in a hundred years."
There were twins, though. Wang Zhenguo’s youngest son had twins, two granddaughters who are three years old this year.
But how could twins compare to triplets? They’re one short in number!
It’s just that Zhuangzhuang’s health is so poor. Seeing Zhuangzhuang like this, sometimes Lu’s father thinks twins might have been better. At least they’d be much healthier than Zhuangzhuang, who seems so fragile that even a gust of wind would be too harsh for him.
The swaddling clothes and diapers were all Xibao’s hand-me-downs, and Feng Qingxue’s thoughts aligned with Lu’s father’s guess.
She hoped that, as the one-eyed monk said, Xibao’s luck could indeed protect Zhuangzhuang.
