Chapter 1074: Chapter 1073: Endless Entanglement 3
What irritated Wang Lingzhi the most was that the Lu Family ordered Guan Cheng around like a servant!
Just like now, why couldn’t Feng Qingxue, who was at home and not working, boil water and cook? Why must they send Guan Cheng rushing back to make chive pockets? And the little girl was clamoring for dumplings, quite the master of ordering!
She was determined to rescue Guan Cheng from his misery, Wang Lingzhi’s almond-shaped eyes blazed with intense light!
Shouldering past Feng Qingyun who was blocking her way, Wang Lingzhi strode away, following the direction in which Guan Cheng had left.
With Guan Cheng gone, she couldn’t bear to see the girl who was actually prettier than herself.
Feng Qingyun shrugged his shoulders and bent down to touch his niece’s smooth and tender little face, "Fubao, Brother Acheng has gone home to make dumplings for you, shall we go home and eat ’jiao jiao’? Look, the sun is getting higher. It will darken Fubao’s white and delicate little face."
"I’m wearing a hat!" Fubao adjusted her pretty little straw hat.
Feng Qingyun laughed along, "Fubao is so smart, knowing that wearing a hat means not being afraid of the sun."
Wen Ruyu waved to Fubao, calling her over.
Fubao trotted over cheerfully, tilting her little face upward, "Grandpa, do you want some water? Fubao has water!"
Saying so, she offered up her little basket.
Wen Ruyu looked down and indeed, there was a canning jar containing half a bottle of water in the basket.
"I don’t want water, thank you Fubao. You’re such a good girl, knowing to offer water to grandpa at such a young age," Wen Ruyu tried to pat Fubao’s head but touched the straw hat instead, "Go home and tell your mum, grandpa wants to eat mashed garlic at noon, just plain buns with mashed garlic are fine, I don’t want chive pockets."
"Okay!" Fubao agreed loudly.
She cheerfully followed Feng Qingyun back home, not yet through the door she announced, "Mummy, grandpa wants garlic!"
Feng Qingxue was cooking the chive pockets in the kitchen. She moved the cooked chive pockets into the bamboo basket and placed the raw ones in the pan before coming out to ask, "Garlic? Which grandpa wants to eat? No worries, our family has lots of garlic, grandpa can have as much as he wants."
Feng Qingyun entered the kitchen with her niece, "It’s Mr. Wen who wants the mashed garlic. I’ll peel the garlic, Acheng, you roast a few green peppers."
She took scissors underneath the eaves and snipped off a few heads of garlic from the big braid, returned to the kitchen to peel plump white garlic cloves, mixed them with the roasted green peppers in the garlic mortar, and crushed them. The seasoning was left to her sister.
The mashed garlic Mr. Wen wanted was ready.
Guan Cheng brought the mashed garlic and the cooked chive pockets over, and everyone found a shady spot. Each person had a chive pocket, savoring them deliciously, while only Wen Ruyu had plain buns with mashed garlic, complimented by a dish of stir-fried green peppers with goose eggs.
Everyone else went home for their meals, so nobody noticed that their fare was quite luxurious.
The chive pockets were almost everyone in the Lu Family’s favorite, especially since Feng Qingxue was generous with the ingredients. One bite, and aside from the crust, it was all chives and egg, with the egg making up half the filling.
"Do we have enough eggs?" Lu Tianzhi inquired, "Aunt, leave them for Xibao and Fubao to eat."
Feng Qingxue smiled, "Eat up, we have enough eggs. Uncle, auntie, and the others have brought us plenty of chicken, duck, and goose eggs. The weather’s hot; we should eat them up before they go bad."
She had given each family plenty of Capital’s specialties, and each had repaid the favor in kind.
Eggs were probably the most presentable gift they had, so they sent at least a dozen or twenty, and in some cases, as many as thirty to fifty.
Uncle Feng had brought a basket full of eggs – twenty chicken, thirty duck, and fifteen goose eggs – while accompanying Feng Shuanzhu and his wife to express their thanks. Such were the ways of neighborly exchange.
