Chapter 281: Chapter 280: Make Everyone Unable to Hear
Thoughts were thoughts, but greetings still had to be given.
Mianmian brought her hands together in a salute and greeted Abbot Yong Hui, "Hello Abbot Yong Hui, I am Mianmian. Mianmian arrived late, sorry about that."
Yong Hui bowed in return to Mianmian, his face still wearing his signature smile, "Sister Mianmian, I have been waiting for you for a long time. Please have a seat. Excuse my humble self, but I’m about to start the scripture lecture."
Mianmian nodded and looked behind her.
Next to Qing Xu and Yong Jue, there were empty cushions, seemingly reserved for them.
So she walked over with her little short legs, her ancient-style dress fluttering around her.
The Jiang Family didn’t belong to Buddhism or Daoism, but for today’s important occasion, Mianmian wore the clothes her mother would dress her in for important family events on the mountain.
The dress was light pink, an ancient style with many layers. To avoid overheating, she had attached a Cooling Talisman to herself and also distributed them to her friends and her grand-nephew.
Because her friends also wore Jiang Family clothes, this idea actually came from Bai Bai. Mianmian asked around, and everyone agreed, including Yang Xian.
Mianmian actually found it very strange and asked Yang Xian why he agreed to wear Jiang Family clothes, but Yang Xian didn’t directly answer her, only saying it was time to depart.
Since Yang Xian didn’t want to talk about it, Mianmian didn’t pursue the matter any further.
The group all sat down on the cushions. Abbot Yong Hui on the stage, with his hands together and a smile, said, "Now that our honored guests have arrived, I shall humbly offer my insights. Let me share the understandings I’ve gained from reading the ’Kṣitigarbha Sūtra’ recently."
Yong Hui began to recite sections of the Kṣitigarbha Sūtra, adding his own insights.
The golden aura around him grew more and more vibrant, with specks falling around the people in the square. Some landed around Mianmian, who was about to touch them out of curiosity when Yang Xian’s voice came from behind, "Don’t touch."
Mianmian confirmed she heard Yang Xian speaking and felt curious.
But now sitting in the front, she couldn’t turn back to ask Yang Xian and quietly stayed put.
At this moment, Yang Xian was frowning.
Under his Heavenly Eye, those golden specks were just superficial, while inside they were actually black.
This was different from when Mianmian had live-streamed before, when the light around her had only been gold, gray, white, and black.
Finding this curious, Yang Xian concentrated even harder, trying to discern what was truly going on with Yong Hui as he lectured. But upon reconnecting with Yong Hui, a sharp pain struck his brow, and the next second, he was blinded!
Yang Xian felt alarmed, but being too far from Mianmian, it wasn’t appropriate to speak out again.
Mianmian was secretly using a talisman.
An invisible Vajra Talisman.
She trusted Yang Xian. Since he said not to touch the lights, she decided not to. And from that, she deduced that whatever Yong Hui was saying also wasn’t good.
So, she decided to prevent the people in the square from touching the lights and from hearing Yong Hui’s voice.
Under Mianmian’s covert action, some of those who had been sitting with eyes closed, receiving the sanctification of the chant, suddenly felt nothing at all.
They opened their eyes and looked towards Yong Hui.
Seeing that the Abbot was still lecturing without pause, they wondered: Had Master Yong Hui regressed in his spiritual state? Why didn’t today’s lecture have the refreshing feeling of the past?
Or were they just not good enough?
These people speculated wildly in their hearts, not daring to reveal that they hadn’t heard Master Yong Hui’s scripture, for fear of being mocked by acquaintances. So they kept enduring in silence.
As time ticked by, the entire square became restless. Unable to comprehend, they naturally couldn’t concentrate, and many sat listlessly.
The original monks of Fahua Temple saw this and pondered with furrowed brows.
They too realized today’s lecture was different from the previous ones. Surely it wasn’t the Abbot regressing in his state, so what was the reason for the restlessness among the audience?
As time dragged on, the monks grew anxious, wanting to interrupt Yong Hui but fearing reprimand. They too could only close their eyes and silently recite scripture to pass the time.
Soon, it was noon.
The first volume of the ’Kṣitigarbha Sūtra’ had just finished, and Yong Hui opened his eyes, smiling, "Everyone, please forgive my humble performance. These are the insights I’ve gained in recent years. Does anyone have questions or would like to exchange thoughts with me?"
Yong Hui’s gaze landed on Qing Xu, "Daoist Master Qing Xu, do you have any instructions?"
Qing Xu flicked his duster, seeming enigmatic.
He shook his head slightly, his gaze falling on Yong Jue, "The principles of Buddhism, naturally differ in Daoist understanding. It is more appropriate for you and Abbot Yong Jue to exchange views."
Yong Jue silently cursed: Old Daoist! I thank you!
He had detected a slight fluctuation just now and then had heard nothing. Without hearing, he naturally couldn’t articulate anything, so how could he exchange views with Yong Hui?
Qing Xu really knew how to set a trap.
As Yong Jue was at a loss, a young man unable to contain himself, ignoring the meaningful look from his teacher, suddenly spoke out loud, "Abbot Yong Hui, did you really speak just now? Why after hearing three sentences did I stop hearing anything?"
With this statement out in the open, Yong Hui also frowned, "How could you not have heard? I spoke very carefully just now."
At this moment, the monks of Fahua Temple approached Yong Hui and also informed him that they hadn’t heard anything either.
Yong Hui’s smile stiffened for a moment.
How could everyone not have heard it? He had prepared earnestly for today, wanting to show that Fahua Temple was no less than Shifang Temple. Now at the end of the first lecture, the crowd below hadn’t heard a thing.
What exactly was going on?
"Abbot Yong Hui, regarding our inability to hear, I do have an idea," someone seated to the left of Yang Xian suddenly spoke up, "Just now, I heard this young brother say ’don’t touch,’ and then I couldn’t hear anything. At first, I thought it might be a test from Master Yong Hui, but now it seems that it’s not?"
"I heard it too, indeed as this brother said," another chimed in.
Once one person declared the truth, many followed suit. At first, they were afraid of their own inadequacy, worried about ridicule from those around them. But now that someone had bravely spoken up, they no longer needed to fear.
If no one heard anything, it couldn’t possibly be that they all lacked spiritual roots or the ability to understand, right?
Yong Hui looked towards Yang Xian, "Benefactor, please enlighten us all."
Yang Xian remained silent.
If he truly wanted to enlighten them, he certainly knew that it was Mianmian’s doing. Because he said not to touch, so Mianmian listened to him, knowing that those light specks weren’t good, and took action to prevent everyone present from hearing.
But to say it openly would make Mianmian the target of everyone’s criticism.
When they had first entered the square, people had already been complaining that Mianmian was late. If they were to hear that it was Mianmian who caused them not to hear, who knows what they would do.
And yet, Yang Xian never lied, even though he had roamed outside for eleven years, he had always aspired to be honest.
What to do?
Yang Xian’s gaze involuntarily fell on Mianmian in front of him.
