Chapter 124: Chapter 123: Things from the Underworld

Shock gave way to commotion as the Ghost Envoy standing beside Mianmian quickly dashed in front of her, pushing away the one who was questioning her.

"I’ll take you, I’ll take you, just give me one gold ingot and that’s enough," he offered.

"Better let me take you. I know the way extremely well, and last month I escorted the most ghosts, earning the title of outstanding staff member."

"I’ll take you, I’ll take you—no need to pay me. Just say a few good words about me in front of the judge, that’ll do."

The Ghost Envoys surrounded Mianmian, babbling all at once and jostling to snatch up the task.

Mianmian hadn’t expected to be encircled and lifted her head, turning around to inspect these Ghost Envoys, unsure of whom to choose as her guide.

Just then, a familiar face suddenly appeared between the legs of one of the Ghost Envoys.

Mianmian saw it and excitedly called out the name, "Yao Qian, Yao Qian!"

Yao Qian had just led a newly-hooked ghost through the Ghost Gate.

This side of the Ghost Gate, the main road is known as Naihe Road. Naihe Road starts off wide, but as you move along, it narrows down, necessitating a queue.

Yao Qian was also seeing his colleagues gathered together for the first time, not in a rush to lead the ghost inside. He thought it peculiar, so he squeezed in to join the excitement.

There were too many people, so he had to crawl through the gaps between the other Ghost Envoys’ legs. He didn’t expect that upon looking up, he would come face-to-face with Little Auntie Su Mianmian.

"My, isn’t this Little Auntie?" Yao Qian was excited, "How come you’re here for a visit, and didn’t even give me a heads-up? I would have come to welcome you."

The way he spoke was as if he were coddling a child, which left the Ghost Envoys who knew Yao Qian speechless.

"What’s with you, Yao Qian, turning into such a sycophant?"

"Exactly, exactly. Weren’t you looking down on people with your nose in the air after sending a few evil ghosts down and earning a big gold ingot not too long ago?"

"Yao Qian, let me tell you, you better step aside. This kid spoke to me first," one Ghost Envoy said.

The Ghost Envoys began to tug at Yao Qian, trying to pull him away so they could talk to Mianmian themselves.

Yao Qian had no intention of moving aside and quickly grabbed the Soul-hooking Rope next to Mianmian, squatting down steadfastly by her side.

"Little Auntie, please help me, my legs are about to be pulled off," Yao Qian pleaded.

A Ghost Envoy’s essence is still a soul, which can be tugged and stretched. Yao Qian’s legs were pulled so long by the numerous Ghost Envoys that they resembled the pulled sugar candy Mianmian had eaten.

Mianmian, afraid that Yao Qian’s legs might actually be pulled off, hurriedly cast a Vajra Talisman on him.

Yao Qian’s legs returned to normal, and with a beaming smile, he patted the villagers of Yide Village caught in the Soul-hooking Lock, praising, "As expected of Little Auntie—impressive! The souls you hook are truly extraordinary. Just look at this Dark Qi on them, I bet in the mortal realm, they’d become Ghost Kings in no time."

Flattered by the praise, Mianmian revealed a small white smile, "Not at all, not at all, Mianmian isn’t that amazing."

Having exchanged pleasantries, she curiously asked Yao Qian, "Yao Qian, where’s the ghost you hooked?"

All the other Ghost Envoys around were holding onto the souls.

Mianmian’s question snapped Yao Qian back to reality. He looked down at his hands and slapped his thigh, "Oh no, I got distracted by the commotion and lost that little evil ghost."

Yao Qian hurried to stand on his tiptoes and look towards the Ghost Gate, worried that the small evil ghost might escape.

These Ghost Envoys were also in the process of cultivation, practicing ghostly magic in hopes of catching ghosts to mark their achievements and earn more resources for cultivation and currency from the Underworld.

Yao Qian was now capable of capturing these small evil ghosts only because Mianmian had previously sent him two well-bound evil ghosts, which allowed him to level up successfully.

Mianmian saw that Yao Qian was indeed in a hurry, and there were still many Ghost Envoys gathered around, so she summoned the Flying Sword and flew up into the air with Yao Qian.

Just in time to see the evil ghost locked by the Soul-hooking Rope threading through the Ghost Envoys, nearly escaping to the Ghost Gate.

Mianmian quickly flew over, allowing Yao Qian to grab the Soul-hooking Rope and recapture the little evil ghost.

They also happily escaped the encirclement of the other Ghost Envoys.

Yao Qian was excited, "My heavens, how are you so strong? Can you still use the Flying Sword in the Underworld?"

Mianmian paused, "Can’t you use it in the Underworld?"

Yao Qian noticed that Mianmian did not know and explained, "I died rather early, and so I became a Ghost Envoy early too. Back then, there was a monk’s soul captured by Judge Zhong to be taken into the Underworld, tried to fly away but failed to fly."

"Judge Zhong said something about restrictions in the Underworld, that even the Jade Emperor must abide by them."

Upon hearing that there were regulations, Mianmian quickly descended to the ground.

She wanted to be a well-behaved child who follows the rules.

Before Yao Qian could fully enjoy the ride, the Flying Sword landed, and he had no choice but to queue up and walk forward through the narrowest parts.

He felt a pang of regret, thinking it would have been great if he hadn’t mentioned it—they might have been able to enjoy it to the fullest.

But it didn’t matter much, at least he had completely made a name for himself in front of Little Auntie. He had heard that Judge Cui had been out for a long time one day, probably to meet with Little Auntie. Otherwise, how would Little Auntie have Judge Cui’s token?

Yao Qian made up his mind to make Mianmian like him even more, thus began introducing, "Little Auntie, this is the Yellow Springs Road. We Ghost Envoys take the ghosts through Yellow Springs Road, then we still have to pass by Nostalgia Pavilion, Evil Dog Ridge, Golden Chicken Mountain, Wild Ghost Village, Soul-confusing Hall before finally reaching Fengdu Ghost City to wait for the next trial."

"There are so many ghosts that the whole of Fengdu is filled with souls, we’re all incredibly busy."

Mianmian had long heard about this road and her mother had introduced the structure of the Underworld too. At this moment, she curiously looked at the bright red flowers blooming on the Yellow Springs Road. These flowers are called the Bitter Flowers, also known as Manjushahua in Sanskrit.

The Bitter Flowers were a vast stretch of bright red. When the flowers bloom, the leaves aren’t visible, and when the leaves are present, the flowers cannot be seen, a truly magical flower.

Mother had said that these flowers bloomed everywhere in the Underworld and warned they were not delicious, and to never eat them upon seeing them.

Now seeing them with her own eyes, Mianmian was very curious about just how unappetizing they could be, so she asked Yao Qian, "Have you ever eaten these flowers?"

Yao Qian was startled, "Ah? You mean the Bitter Flowers? These things that grow in the netherworld certainly aren’t tasty, why eat them?"

The main reason, actually, was that eating Bitter Flowers would make a ghost recall the saddest event they had experienced.

Mianmian pursed her lips and smiled, her eyes mischievously rolling about, clearly up to no good, "Mianmian is just curious and wants to have a taste. It’s okay to pick one, right? No harm done, right?"

She asked three times in a row, blinking her large eyes innocently and adorably.

Yao Qian was completely charmed by Little Bun’s deliberate cuteness and squatted down to pluck a flower, "You eat, you eat, eat as much as you like."

"Thank you!" Mianmian said, and took a petal from the flower and put it in her mouth. As soon as she closed her lips, she frowned and tried to spit out the petal, pa-toui pa-toui.

Mom didn’t lie, the flower was indeed unappetizing; it was so bitter!

And then...

She saw again the scene of her parents lying on the bed, their souls inside a spiritual tablet.

Tears immediately welled up in Mianmian’s eyes as she said sadly, "Okay then, I should listen to Mom’s advice, these flowers really aren’t tasty."
