Avenging Luna -
Chapter 108: Falling Into My Own Trap
Chapter 108: Falling Into My Own Trap
LEILA POV:
"Luna," Doctor Harry said gently, concern etched into his features as he stood by my bedside during his morning rounds. "It’s been almost three weeks. I can’t continue to give you these medicines that are making you sick, or you will be really unwell. I’m sorry, but it seems like whatever you wanted to accomplish isn’t working."
His words hit me like a punch to the gut, shock reverberating through me. The realization that my plan might be failing sent a wave of panic washing over me. How was I supposed to proceed without Doctor Harry’s help? His support had been my lifeline, and without him, I felt utterly lost, adrift in uncertainty.
Drake had gone to visit our son, leaving me alone to grapple with this dire news. The weight of my situation pressed down on me, each breath feeling heavier than the last. I had fought so hard to expose Lily, to clear my name and protect Ash, but now it felt as though the ground was crumbling beneath me. What if my plan failed? What if I couldn’t gather the evidence I needed in time?
Fear twisted in my stomach, mingling with the frustration of being trapped in this precarious position. I couldn’t let it end like this. I wouldn’t.
"Your health matters a lot," Doctor Harry continued, his voice steady yet tinged with concern. "With the continued intake of this medication, it will affect you badly. I thought you would have succeeded, but I think it’s time to come clean to the Alpha."
"No! Drake can’t know about this!" I interjected quickly, panic rising in my chest. The thought of him finding out sent a shiver down my spine. He wouldn’t understand; he would only see the betrayal and the lies, and that could shatter our already fragile relationship.
I could envision his reaction—the hurt in his eyes, the disappointment. I couldn’t bear it. Not now, when we were already walking a tightrope between trust and doubt. I had to keep this under wraps, at least until I had something solid to bring to him, something that would prove my innocence and expose Lily for the monster she was.
"Please, Doctor, you have to help me find another way. I can’t let him in on this yet," I pleaded, desperation seeping into my voice. "If he finds out, it will only drive a wedge between us that we might never mend. I need time—I need to handle this myself."
"I’m sorry, Luna," Doctor Harry replied, his voice steady but filled with regret. "There is no other way. You simply can’t continue to take these drugs. My life is already on the line for lying to the Alpha about your condition. If I keep you on this medication and it makes you even more sick, I could face severe consequences—worse, I could be made a rogue. So please, don’t put me in more trouble than I’m already in."
His words hit me like a cold wave, the gravity of the situation pressing down on me. I could see the conflict in his eyes, the loyalty he felt toward both me and Drake. He was caught between a rock and a hard place, and I didn’t want to be the cause of his downfall.
"Doctor, I understand your position, but I can’t let Drake find out. Not yet. I need time to figure this out on my own," I implored, desperation clawing at my insides. "If you have to stop the medication, then help me find another way to manage this until I can expose Lily. I promise I’ll do whatever it takes. Just please... don’t let this be the end."
Doctor Harry sighed, running a hand through his hair as he considered my plea. "I’m afraid I can’t continue this scheme, Leila. It’s too risky for both of us. I’ll give you one week—just one week—to finalize whatever it is you’re trying to do or to come clean to Drake. After that, I won’t be able to help you anymore."
The weight of his words settled heavily in the room, a mix of relief and dread washing over me. A week. It felt like both an eternity and a fleeting moment. I needed that time, but I also felt the pressure mounting with each passing second.
"Thank you, Doctor," I said, trying to keep my voice steady, though a knot tightened in my stomach. "I promise I’ll use it wisely. I just need to gather the evidence against Lily and prove my innocence before I face him."
He nodded, a look of sympathy mixed with disappointment in his eyes. "Just remember, Leila, the truth will always come out. You need to make your choice. But know this—whatever you decide, your health must come first. I can’t watch you destroy yourself for the sake of a plan."
With that, he turned to leave, the door closing behind him with a soft click that echoed in the silence. I sat there for a moment, the gravity of the ultimatum hanging heavily in the air. I had a week to either expose Lily or risk everything by revealing the truth to Drake. Time was running out, and the stakes had never been higher.
Just then Lily entered with a smug look holding a bouquet of flowers.
Lily POV:
As I strolled down the quiet corridor toward Leila’s room, a wicked thrill curled through me. The mighty Luna, reduced to a pale, bedridden wreck—it was more than I’d hoped for. I carried my usual bouquet of sweet-smelling flowers, a charming cover that would let me waltz right in without suspicion. But as I approached, I froze outside the door, catching the sound of hushed voices. Recognizing Doctor Harry’s muffled tone, I leaned in, pressing myself to the wall just out of sight. My ears strained to catch every word, my heart beating with gleeful anticipation.
"Luna," Doctor Harry’s voice came through the door, low and serious, "I’m afraid I can’t continue this scheme any longer. It’s too risky for both of us."
I blinked, my lips curling upward. Scheme? Oh, now this was just too rich. Holding back a laugh, I slipped my phone from my pocket and quickly hit the record button, letting it capture every delicious word. A part of me wanted to burst into that room right then and there, to watch Leila’s face crumple with the realization that I knew, that her pathetic little act was falling apart. But no—I would be patient. I would savor this moment and let her keep talking, let her dig her own grave just a bit deeper.
"I’ll give you one week," Doctor Harry continued, sounding weary and almost regretful. "Just one week to finalize whatever it is you’re trying to do or come clean to the Alpha. After that, I won’t be able to help you anymore."
Oh, poor, poor Leila, I thought, biting back a smile as I held my phone steady. So she’d been faking her illness all along? And Drake had fallen for it? Oh, the poor fool had been waiting on her hand and foot, fretting over his dying mate, while she spun him into her pathetic web of lies.
"Thank you, Doctor," Leila’s voice came, trembling and barely controlled. "I promise, I’ll use it wisely. I just need to gather the evidence against Lily and prove my innocence before I face him."
Evidence against me? I nearly laughed out loud, but I stifled it with my hand. So she had the audacity to think she could expose me, that she could somehow bring me down? She really was as delusional as I thought. And now, I had her entire charade neatly recorded, her voice as clear as day, admitting that she was deceiving Drake and everyone else. Oh, this was almost too good to be true.
"Just remember, Leila," Harry said solemnly, "your health must come first. I can’t watch you destroy yourself for the sake of a plan."
The doctor’s voice faded as he left, and I quickly stepped back, slipping my phone into my pocket and smoothing down my hair, making sure my expression was nothing but concern. I waited until Harry was out of sight before pushing the door open and slipping in, plastering on my most sickeningly sweet smile.
"Leila!" I exclaimed, holding out the flowers, my voice sugary and dripping with fake sympathy. "I just wanted to come by and see how you were doing we weren’t done talking the last time I was here. Everyone’s been so worried about you, you know. It must be so hard... all the suffering, all the pain. But don’t you worry, I’ll make sure to take care of Ash and Drake. They won’t feel the void you’ll leave... much."
Leila looked at me, a flicker of anger flashing in her weak, dull eyes. I relished it, knowing how powerless she was in that bed, knowing I’d caught her at her most vulnerable. She could do nothing but stare back, that feigned bravery starting to crumble.
"Oh, dear," I continued with a simper, pulling up a chair and sitting beside her bed. "And I just can’t help but think how awful it must be for you to go through all this. You must feel so helpless, lying here, hoping someone might believe your stories." I tilted my head, lowering my voice into a whisper. "Or are you just hoping no one finds out that this whole thing was a big, pathetic act?"
The flicker in her eyes became a full blaze of rage, but I only smiled wider, feigning innocence as I held her gaze. I wanted her to know, without me saying a word, that her time was running out. That I held her secret in the palm of my hand.
"You know, Leila," I murmured, leaning closer, "it must be so hard to keep up with lies. They have a way of slipping, don’t they? Just one little mistake, and everyone will see you for who you really are." I gave a soft, pitying sigh. "But don’t you worry. When the time comes, I’ll make sure Drake is well taken care of. He won’t miss you nearly as much as you’d like to think."
Leila’s face went pale, her hands clutching the sheets, but she stayed silent, powerless. And I, triumphant, stood up, tossing the flowers carelessly on her bedside table.
"Rest well, Luna," I said with a smile, slipping back out of the room, my heart thrumming with satisfaction. I had her confession, her lies, everything on that little recording, a ticking time bomb I could set off whenever I chose. Oh, the Alpha would hear it. The whole pack would. And when they did, they would see that Luna for the weak, conniving fraud she truly was.
