Chapter 27: Instructors Arrives... A Brand New Day...

In another part of the academy, someone else also wore a troubled expression.

Staring at the line of glowing words projected by the system, Sylvia cursed under her breath.

"How frustrating."

Her ability had been taken away, and although the week would pass like any other, the sensation of powerlessness left a bitter taste in her mouth.

With a sigh, she rose from her bed and walked to the wooden table not far from where she had been lying.

The dim light of the room flickered faintly across her face as her gaze shifted to the open book resting on the table.

The title etched in bold letters on the page read, "The Great Battle Between Origin Paths and Bloodlines."

...

Elsewhere, at the monolith.

Desmond resisted the urge to smash himself on the forehead. His thoughts churned as he muttered inwardly, ’Now how do I explain this to the academy?’

He had no answers, no excuses, only the reality of failure.

With a reluctant sigh, he reached into his origin ring and retrieved a slim, crystalline device that resembled a phone. Tapping the surface, he dialed a sequence of numbers.

Moments later, the quiet surroundings of the monolith were interrupted by a rhythmic beeping sound.

Within seconds, three figures materialized out of thin air before him. Their presence distorted the space around them, signifying their immense strength.

One of them, a tall man who appeared to be in his forties, stepped forward. He had long blonde hair that flowed past his shoulders, and his piercing gaze locked directly onto Desmond.

"Tell me. What happened here?"

His voice sounded unnaturally calm, almost soothing, and Desmond found his mind slipping into a daze.

Compelled by some unseen force, he began recounting everything. He described the sequence of events, the strange abilities of the intruders, and every detail he could remember.

However, since he hadn’t witnessed Matthew use any abilities, he had nothing specific to report about him except for one vague observation—that he had been cooperative.

As Desmond finished his account, the three Rank 7 Espers glanced at one another. A long silence followed as they stood absorbed in thought.

Eventually, one of them—a man with dark blue eyes, pale green hair, and a green patch covering his right eye—broke the silence.

"Could it be the Dragon Worshipers again?"

The third instructor, a woman with sharp features and neatly styled dark green hair, shook her head. Her uniform was clean, pressed, and her composure flawless.

"I scanned the monolith. Aside from the adamantium, the only thing missing is a single crystal. That tells me they weren’t after anything too significant. Still, we can’t rule anything out until we confirm who did this."

Hearing her words, the others nodded slowly.

"We can’t afford to be careless. Let’s assign one of the instructors to remain here for the time being and monitor the area. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Even if the Dragon Worshipers didn’t take something of value, there could be a bigger plan in motion."

"Asaline is right. We need to stay vigilant. Inform the instructors, but keep this hidden from the students. I do not want panic spreading."

Having made their decision, the first instructor lifted his hand, and a swirling silver portal formed in the air.

The others stepped into the portal, and just before the first instructor entered, he paused. Turning toward Desmond, he flicked his wrist and tossed a small packet toward him.

Without another word, he stepped through the portal. The silvery light pulsed once, then faded entirely.

Desmond caught the packet in his hand and stared at it. His eyes, heavy with exhaustion and dark circles beneath them, suddenly brightened.

"Another coffee blend? Hah. This might keep me awake for the next few weeks. With any luck, that will be enough time to track down the Dream Dimension Natal Treasure."

With a tired chuckle, he turned and hurried back toward his post, returning to his duties as a guard.

...

A few minutes later, several Rank 8 guards appeared at the monolith. The rest of the night passed without incident.

As a soft ray of sunlight broke through the morning haze, Matthew jolted awake.

His eyes squinted against the light, and he slowly scanned the room before rising from his bed.

Since the adamantium did not require energy to suppress his ability, Matthew had no reason to worry about losing control in his sleep. Still, instinctively, he glanced at his hand to confirm.

Everything seemed normal.

With a slight nod, he stretched lightly and yawned.

’I wonder what today’s event will be. Surely it isn’t just normal classes anymore?’

That thought lingered as he shuffled into the bathroom. After refreshing himself, he exited his room and glanced toward the shared space. His roommates were nowhere in sight.

Matthew simply shrugged and headed for the door.

Now that he possessed the means to protect himself, he no longer feared walking around the academy freely.

Just as he was about to reach the exit, he suddenly froze and smacked his forehead.

’Wait... didn’t I decay the door? Damn! What if they trace that incident back to me?’

His heart skipped a beat as a wave of panic surged within him.

He rushed to the entrance to assess the damage, but the moment he arrived, his eyes widened.

The door looked brand new.

Not even a scratch.

"How?"

His whisper barely escaped his lips when a mocking voice echoed in his mind.

"How can you be so careless? Luckily, I took care of it. Honestly, you should be thanking me for everything I do for you."

Recognizing the voice, Matthew replied inwardly.

’Axel?’

"That’s right, genius. Ever heard of a sound transmission ability before?"

Matthew was stunned.

’Why didn’t I transmigrate with something like that?’ he grumbled inwardly.

Axel’s tendency to swap abilities like changing clothes was something Matthew deeply envied.

Meanwhile, he was stuck with one complex and mysterious ability—Origin Path, which contained five unique paths within.

’I’ve already awakened the first Origin Path. I should start planning how to unlock the remaining ones.’

He pondered silently.

’Axel belongs to the Potion Origin Path. If I replicate that path, will I obtain his ability too?’

The idea seemed tempting, but reality set in quickly.

He hadn’t copied the previous boy’s ability, only the path. It was only through his own efforts that he earned the SSS-grade ability, Uncontrollable Decay.

Matthew sighed.

Even if he copied Axel’s Origin Path, he would still need access to the rare potions tied to it. Doing so would likely attract the attention of powerful forces within the academy.

He wasn’t willing to take that risk.

’In that case, I’ll just focus on the remaining three paths. I’ve always wanted that element from the Elemental Origin Path...’

Before he could dwell further, Axel’s voice rang out in his mind once more.

"Why are you so silent? I’m literally standing outside your door. Let’s go already. Instructor Silas is making us engage in a duel."

"A duel? That’s not supposed to happen so soon!" Matthew exclaimed internally.
