Chapter 19: The Protagonists Arrives... Elemental Origin Path!
Meanwhile, Leo, who had just left his dorm room to complete the system’s mission, encountered unexpected trouble the very moment he stepped outside.
A loud noise had drawn the attention of the guards, and it just so happened to originate in his direction.
Frowning as he looked into the distance, Leo swiftly ducked behind a wall, only a few feet away from where the sound had come.
His eyes narrowed as the sound of heavy footsteps neared his location.
Two guards arrived at the scene moments later, their expressions stern as they began scanning the surrounding area.
Their eyes were sharp and alert, scanning for any sign of what had caused the disturbance.
Suddenly, one of the guards’ expressions shifted. His eyes lit up as he studied the shadows nearby.
"There’s someone here," he whispered quietly, his voice transmitting directly into the mind of his companion in a low whisper/
The second guard raised a brow in surprise. "How’s that possible?"
Although their voices were low, Leo, who was listening with extreme focus, caught every word.
A cold chill ran down his spine, and his heart began to race.
His fears were confirmed when the first guard suddenly turned and locked eyes in the direction where Leo was hiding.
"There!" the guard shouted, pointing sharply.
Without another word, he rushed forward, leaving Leo with no time to respond.
If Leo had known that it was actually Axel who had tossed an object in that direction to mislead the guards, who knew what he would have done?
But without that knowledge, all he could do was pray silently that the two guards wouldn’t target him.
Unfortunately for him, fate had other plans.
The instant the guards reached his location, a surge of origin energy stirred around them.
Without delay, the first guard pulled out a gleaming sword from his origin ring.
Upon catching sight of Leo’s silhouette, the guard didn’t hesitate.
He launched a swift strike.
Leo’s heart pounded as he saw the incoming attack.
It carried the full strength of a rank 9 esper.
The mask covering his face obscured his identity, making the guards assume he was an intruder.
Yet he knew that if he exposed his face, his identity would be revealed immediately, putting his entire mission in jeopardy.
The situation was both a curse and a blessing.
Although the mask had protected him for now, it also gave the guards a reason to attack.
Leo’s eyes darted between the two guards. He knew he couldn’t afford to waste time.
If they had a method of calling reinforcements, he would be caught before completing the mission.
Without a second thought, Leo sprang into action. His speed amplified in a flash, becoming almost exaggerated to the eye.
In the blink of an eye, he vanished from his position, leaving behind faint afterimages that rippled like shadows under moonlight.
His incredible speed was not due to the space element but another element... one of the elements he had awakened along the elemental path.
It was the lightning element.
Crackles of purple lightning arced faintly across his skin as he reappeared behind the two guards, faster than they could react.
But these were not ordinary guards.
They belonged to the Origin Academy, trained veterans who had survived years of combat.
Although Leo was faster, they were experienced and not easy to surprise.
The first guard activated his emotion-detecting ability, sensing the emotional energy radiating from Leo’s body.
To his eyes, Leo appeared like a brilliant lantern glowing against the dark backdrop of the academy grounds.
Without hesitation, the guard raised his sword and slashed upwards in a sharp arc.
Leo’s eyes widened, but he quickly tilted to the side, narrowly dodging the strike.
’I can’t delay any longer!’ Leo thought with a clenched jaw.
He understood that the moment they realized they were outmatched, they would immediately call for backup.
That was something he could not afford.
Taking a deep breath, Leo shifted his stance and pushed his palm forward with firm resolve.
Bolts of lightning surged from his hand, spiraling like jagged arrows of energy, crackling as they pierced the air and shot towards the two guards.
The guards, already on high alert, didn’t panic.
The first one sensed the unusual energy and emotion within the lightning and raised his sword to intercept it.
However, the moment he slashed at the attack, his expression shifted with disbelief.
"What—?" he gasped, staggering backwards.
His balance faltered, and the lightning bolt pierced his torso.
A wave of electricity surged through his body.
His muscles twitched involuntarily, and a moment later, he collapsed to the ground with a faint thud, unconscious.
Leo exhaled slowly, a small wave of relief washing over him.
Without waiting, he stomped the ground lightly, using his earth element to alter the terrain beneath the second guard’s feet.
The earth trembled.
Before the remaining guard could adjust his footing, a concealed bolt of lightning erupted from the ground, striking him directly.
A dull sound echoed as the guard was paralyzed by the force of the attack and fell flat.
Both guards were now incapacitated.
Leo allowed a small smile to curve on his lips. ’Fortunately, I’m strong enough to handle two rank 9 espers.’
He took a deep breath and continued his internal thoughts. ’Of course, this is only possible because I’ve awakened two elements belonging to the elemental origin path. Not only that, I’m almost at the peak of rank 9.’
Unlike most who awakened one element from the elemental origin path, Leo had awakened two elements, putting him a tier above other espers at the same rank.
Harnessing both lightning and earth, he had efficiently taken down two elite guards without causing a large disturbance.
After ensuring the area was clear, Leo glanced down at the unconscious guards.
He dragged their bodies into a dark corner and knocked them out once again to ensure they would not wake up anytime soon.
Then, with swift footsteps, he raced toward the towering monolith where the upgrade treasure was said to be located.
...
At the same time, Sylvia arrived at the monolith; however, she arrived far from the place Matthew and Axel had previously entered.
Because of the distance, she failed to notice the broken fragments in the wall or the subtle clues that the location had already been infiltrated.
She stared up at the monolith and muttered under her breath.
’How frustrating...’
Placing her palm on its surface, the moment her hand made contact, something within the monolith reacted.
Its form twisted and warped, the surface rippling unnaturally before it slowly shifted to the side.
Within moments, a wide gap had been created in the wall.
The gap was large enough for Sylvia to enter, almost seeming like a door.
However, Sylvia’s expression turned pale the moment she used her S-grade ability.
Because her ability was too overpowered, it came at a price anytime she used it...
After all, her ability was the mysterious...
