...
Central Ring, old city district.
The time had reached midnight.
For this time of night, even in the bustling Dongfang Capital, many workers had already fallen into a deep sleep.
But for those rich in nightlife, this was just the beginning of the revelry.
A disco hidden within the city was in full swing at this moment.
Deafening music, blinding lights, and the gyrating throngs of young men and women, everything was telling everyone here that the night life had started, and it was time to get high.
And in a hidden room at the very back of the building, a peculiar meeting was unfolding.
The atmosphere here seemed to have been influenced by the adjacent hall and had become equally lively.
A group of young people was getting quite high-spirited in their conversation.
"Ah, that time when we teamed up to attack the ’New Alliance’ Central Bank, the firewall was seriously tough, we almost crashed!"
"Lucky for us, it was an international operation. Even if they had traced our IP, they couldn’t have touched us!"
"Honestly, we nearly failed that time. No need for me to say whose fault it was, right?"
After exchanging glances, several young people in the room shouted in unison, "Viper!"
"Damn it, that guy didn’t show up!"
"I heard that he got himself a girlfriend, so enviable it makes your teeth itch!"
"Forget it, PigMan, weren’t you the one who said the third dimension makes you sick, that your true love is only for the two-dimensional?"
"Back off, 2D is a hobby, but don’t rule me out with one stick, there are beautiful girls in 3D too!"
"I heard you even went to a 2D cosplay gathering, and you joined some internet-famous cosplayers’ fan support groups, is that true?"
"Which damn snitch leaked that info?"
"Wow, so it’s true, you’re really shaming us, huh?"
The gazes of these young people towards the plump one were filled with outright disdain.
"Shameful!"
The sole female in the group shared the sentiment, her face full of contempt as she hissed.
Sitting next to the girl was someone who hadn’t joined in the conversation from the start, it was Zhang Wei.
In truth, he was getting bored.
Because the topics of conversation were unrelated to his expertise.
All he had learned up to now was their codenames.
The chubby one was known as "PigMan," nicknamed "Zhuzhu Xia," a lover of soda who was a chubby fan of the second dimension.
Another, who wore glasses and looked like a tech student, was called "Keyboard," nicknamed "Jianpan," true to his name, he loved collecting keyboards and other electronic peripherals and accessories.
The third one, a skinny guy, was called "Venom," nicknamed "Venom," who claimed to have ended up on multiple national cyber manhunt lists due to his hacking exploits, though Zhang Wei thought this one was prone to exaggeration.
According to their conversation, there was another peer among them, codenamed "Viper," nicknamed "Fushe," known for having a girlfriend which is why he was less involved in meetings and less fond of making appearances.
Of course, these individuals were not the focus of Zhang Wei’s attention.
The person beside him was what mattered.
Zhao Xiaoxiao, codenamed "TheGhost," nicknamed "Ghost."
From the chat, these people seemed to be top hackers from Blue Star who had hacked into several countries’ critical network security infrastructures.
As for why they did it, in their own words, it was all for the fun of it.
Zhao Xiaoxiao was clearly a hacker on their level.
"Speaking of which, any good gigs lately?" someone broached the subject amidst the conversation.
PigMan shook his hefty belly and said, "I heard Astro Tech is looking to hire contractors to test their latest network security protocols, want to give it a shot? I hear the pay isn’t bad, and it’s a legit job too~"
With a smirk of disdain, Venom scoffed, "Working for those corporations, you gotta be kidding me, man. The whole reason I stopped working for the Boss and went solo is cause I didn’t want to be anybody’s dog!"
But his words were met with Keyboard’s mockery, "You call that going solo? Hacking companies’ servers at random, collecting private information from bosses, then blackmailing them, can you even call that a job?"
"Who told them to be dirty, huh?" Venom was unapologetic in his defense, "If their companies weren’t cooking the books, evading taxes, and doing other illegal stuff, would they be blackmailed by me?"
"And about those bosses, harassing female employees at work, cheating married men, and even sneaking off to hire prostitutes, or keeping mistresses behind their wives’ backs. If they were law-abiding citizens one by one, could I have blackmailed them?"
It was evident that he was quite proud of his actions.
Zhao Xiaoxiao couldn’t contain herself and sarcastically quipped at him, "Right, right, you’re the hero fighting for justice, enough already, okay?"
"Ghost, don’t think I won’t retaliate just because you’re a girl!"
"Try it, my boyfriend will protect me!"
Zhao Xiaoxiao, unfazed, grabbed Zhang Wei’s hand directly, showing it to the other three.
The trio looked at Zhao Xiaoxiao, then at Zhang Wei, their gazes oscillating between the two.
"Since your boyfriend is called Death Lawyer, how come none of us have heard anything about him?"
"Yeah, complete radio silence, still searching here!"
Zhuzhu Xia was also holding his phone, fingers tapping rapidly across the screen, but to his disappointment, he couldn’t find anything about "Death Lawyer".
"Death Lawyer, that translates to ’Homicide Lawyer’, right?"
"To be precise, it’s Homicide Lawyer!" Zhao Xiaoxiao waved her hand and then explained, "He’s incredible, always involved in deadly dealings. Everyone who hears his name is scared stiff."
"Deadly dealings!"
Hiss—
The other three exchanged glances, then simultaneously sucked in a breath of cold air.
Wow!
Although they were all hackers and had done things against cyber security laws,
they had never been involved in anything to do with taking lives.
They hadn’t expected Ghost to suddenly bring such a tough character with her when she showed up.
But the tough character, Zhang Wei, was at a loss for words at that moment.
What is all this about?
The way these folks are looking at me is all wrong. Do they think I’m that kind of person who gets paid to work and solves "problems" for others?
Even though, in a certain sense, my job is indeed of that nature.
But isn’t their understanding completely different?
Zhang Wei felt that he had to clarify.
"Actually... I’m not what you guys think... My job is just..."
Before Zhang Wei could speak, he felt a sharp pinch on the flesh at his waist.
Ouch!
Turning his head, he saw the second daughter giving him a warning look that said, "If you dare tell the truth, you’re going to be in for it."
Zhang Wei immediately responded with a defiant look that said, "How are you going to make it bad for me?"
Zhao Xiaoxiao got instantly angry, her lips pouting, her eyes swirling around.
Soon, a smile appeared on the corner of her eyes, and she leaned close to Zhang Wei’s ear.
"Just try it, and I’ll spill the beans about you and Jessica to your silly second sister!"
Upon hearing this, Zhang Wei was stunned.
Wow!
Truly, wow!
"Second daughter, my dear second daughter, how could I not go along with you!"
Zhang Wei now understood that he had to coax the second daughter.
Otherwise, if he wasn’t careful, his affair with Jessica would be exposed, and he might suffer at the "hands" of the silly one.
Just thinking about the silly one’s terrifying combat power made Zhang Wei shiver again.
That girl could punch through walls of steel-reinforced concrete when she got going,
Thinking of the silly one, Zhang Wei was curious.
When they parted, Wu Yong seemed to mention that a mission had come up.
I wonder what she’s up to now?
...
At the same time.
On the street outside the alley.
A dozen vehicles sped past and screeched to a halt at the entrance of the alley.
Dozens of men got out of the cars with serious expressions, eyes locked on the entrance of the alley.
The nearby barbershops and small stores had also closed their doors.
Field agents patrolled the surrounding streets, ensuring the quietude of the area through their intervention.
Indeed, the girls from the local hair salon were hiding inside, cowering.
Seeing such a grand display outside, their first thought was of a police raid.
However, raids usually involved at most a dozen or so personnel, mainly field agents.
They’d never seen anything like today, with dozens or even hundreds of people mobilized at once.
And those who disembarked from the cars were clearly from the criminal investigation department – ruthless operators. Moreover, the women thought it an overreaction to deploy the criminal department for offenses like prostitution – weren’t they stretching it a bit too far?
But what they didn’t know was that these people had no interest in a raid; their actual target was someone else entirely.
As a member of the major case squad, Xia Qianyue was with the team.
And as the nominal head of Squad 7, Wu Yong was directing the team, although their current orders were to stand by and wait.
"Team leader, where’s the person in charge of this operation? They’ve left us hanging here; why haven’t they shown up yet?"
Old Xing couldn’t help but speak up, looking around, but all he could see was an alley and nothing else.
"Our task is to wait for orders, so we wait here and don’t disrupt the operation!"
Wu Yong warned, but he also had a puzzled look on his face.
What’s wrong with this alley? It looks pretty normal to me.
He knew that around this alley there might be some good girls engaged in the "service industry," but to catch them, deploying the major case squad and a large force, wasn’t that a bit too...
This feeling was like using a cannon to kill a mosquito, a complete overkill.
Their major case squad was tasked with criminal investigations, responsible for major and serious cases.
These few good girls, they count as a major case?
It wasn’t just him who thought this way; other investigators pulled into this operation were starting to feel dissatisfied, too.
They called us here with such seriousness, only to give us a broken command. Isn’t this playing us for fools?
Meanwhile, on the rooftop opposite the alley.
A man in a suit with a red tie, his face sinister, was currently using a pair of binoculars to observe the entrance of the alley.
"Mr. Zhang, everyone has arrived and is now standing by near the target. Is it time to act?"
A subordinate reported truthfully from behind the man.
"No rush, let this bunch from the investigation department make the first move. We can just reap the benefits. Otherwise, why would I make an application to specifically call forth so many laborers?" The man smirked sinisterly, then looked ahead.
"Since everyone is here, then let them take action!"
The man gestured with a wave of his hand, giving the order.
"Understood!" The subordinate took a step back and immediately dialed a number.
At the entrance of the alley.
"Mission update, move out!"
In the team, someone shouted, and the investigation squad moved out, heading straight for the far end of the alley.
"The mission has been updated; the target is at the very end of the alley, inside an entertainment venue. Our task is to control everyone inside the venue!"
Within the team, Wu Yong also shouted, making sure the members of the seven groups, including Xia Qianyue, could hear the command.
Suddenly, the team surged towards the end of the alley.
And the men and women lost in revelry had no idea that they had become the targets of the investigation department.
...
Inside the dance hall.
The atmosphere was already near frenzy; countless men and women were twisting their bodies on stage, shouting and dancing wildly.
Click!
But suddenly, the music cut off, and the whole hall plunged into darkness.
Everyone was startled. What had happened?
Could it be a power outage?
Bang!
But in the next moment, with a loud noise, everyone looked in a particular direction.
A large hole had been broken through the wall, and a group of people in uniforms and plain clothes flooded into the hall.
"Investigation Department, hands up and squat down with your heads in your hands!"
The cops are here!
Seeing this, the young people at the scene panicked, yet many obeyed the orders from the investigators and squatted down with their hands raised.
After all, they were just out to relax on the weekend, honest workers on weekdays; they had done nothing wrong.
The targets of the investigation department couldn’t possibly be them.
"Everyone squat down and cooperate with our investigation!"
Several team leaders shouted in the crowd, arranging for officers to monitor everyone present.
Wu Yong did the same, having the members of the seventh group keep watch over a section of about a few dozen people squatting on the ground.
But as a veteran of the serious crime squad, Wu Yong noticed immediately; everyone here was just a regular person.
Some might have dressed in quite non-mainstream styles, but at most they would commit petty theft.
Did they really need the major case squad to catch such people?
Soon, the scene was under control.
Dozens of investigators working together had no trouble securing a place this large.
"Strange, what are we supposed to do after securing these people?"
"You don’t need to do anything because these people aren’t my targets!"
Just as someone voiced their confusion, a chilling voice came from outside the hall.
Then a sinister-faced man walked into the hall, step by step, escorted by several underlings.
"You are...?"
"I am in charge of this operation. You can call me Mr. Zhang!"
The man was arrogant, his attitude icy. He scarcely deigned to look at the criminal investigators before him.
He entered, looking around, then his gaze locked onto a corner.
"This is the place, they definitely prepared a hidden passage, as the saying goes: ’A crafty rabbit has three burrows.’ These guys are smart; they wouldn’t trap themselves!"
As the man spoke, he waved his hand, and the subordinates behind him immediately sprang into action.
At the same time.
In the innermost room.
"The cops are here!"
"Word from outside is that a few hundred people have come, we’re in hot water!"
"Split up and run, don’t stick with me, and if you get caught, don’t rat me out!"
It was unclear who shouted first, but then everything descended into chaos.
Keyboard, Venom, and PigMan, panicked, all scrambled to make their escape.
This innermost room, besides one entrance, also had three sealed doors.
But each of them pulled out a USB drive, plucked the wall sockets out, and directly plugged them in.
Suddenly, the sealed doors opened.
Witnessing this scene, Zhang Wei was shocked; these were all secret doors.
"We need to get out of here too!" Zhao Xiaoxiao reached for Zhang Wei’s hand, ready to follow suit.
But Zhang Wei suddenly exerted force in his grip, instead pulling Zhao Xiaoxiao aside.
"It’s no use. Didn’t you hear them? Hundreds of people are outside!"
With much experience, Zhang Wei analyzed, "If it were a regular operation, at most a dozen people would be deployed, but with hundreds, there’s absolutely no escape."
"If what your friend said is true, among those hundreds, there definitely aren’t just field agents; there are surely investigative ones too."
"To mobilize this many people means the target is either very dangerous or very important, so they must have thought about hidden passages."
"There must be search dogs outside, perhaps even cutting-edge technology, like detectors; do you think your legs can outrun a dog or those passages can go undetected by scanners?"
Hearing all this, Zhao Xiaoxiao was unsettled.
"But we can’t just sit around waiting for the ax to fall!"
"Who said anything about waiting for the ax to fall? If we don’t run, we’re not fleeing, and who’s to say you and I are the targets?"
Zhang Wei spread his hands innocently.
Heaven knows, I, Zhang Someone, never engaged in any criminal activities.
Even if the investigative department comes, they can’t lay a finger on me.
The real issue lies with the second girl.
"Xiao Xiao, the only problem now is you. I suspect the aim of their operation is you guys, so tell me, did any of your hacker activities leave traces online?"
"How could they? I am TheGhost after all!"
"What if those guys get caught, can they rat you out?"
"That’s also impossible because we all communicated anonymously, we’ve never met, and each operation was independent, not interfering with each other."
"Oh, then I get it!"
Relief washed over Zhang Wei as he spoke.
"Alright then, let’s stay calm. After all, we are law-abiding citizens with clear identities, we’ll just cooperate with the investigation!"
Bang!
The moment Zhang Wei’s words fell, the walls of this secret room suddenly shattered.
Then a figure stepped through, moving their arms, taking a step forward.
"See, it’s not hard to open this!"
She muttered, walking into the room first, completely ignoring the stunned looks from everyone behind her.
"Silly person?"
Seeing the newcomer, Zhang Wei in the room was also shocked.
"Huh, Zhang Wei, and little sister Xiao Xiao?"
The person was none other than Xia Qianyue.
She had never imagined that in her own operation, she would encounter Zhang Wei.
"Everyone in this room needs to be controlled too!"
Just then, a cold voice arose behind Xia Qianyue.
A man in a suit entered the room and ordered the people behind him, after which they all rushed toward Zhang Wei and the other person.
"Don’t touch him!" But Xia Qianyue was a step ahead, blocking their path.
The subordinates halted upon seeing Xia Qianyue block them.
No joke, this was someone who could smash through walls barehanded; they might have confidence in their own strength, but they were definitely no match for her.
So, standing still was the safest option.
Yet, seeing Xia Qianyue defy his orders, the man’s brows furrowed.
The operation he had organized now felt like it had a small, uncontrollable problem arising.
