Chapter 62: Chapter 62 Amnesia! Chen Pingchuan, You’re in High School
My name is Chen Pingchuan, and I’m an ordinary high school student.
Well, if I exclude the amnesia, I suppose I could be considered an ordinary high school student.
I have a happy family: a quiet father who isn’t great with words, a kind and loving mother, and a quirky little sister.
A year ago, probably a few days after the Red Rain descended, I was in a serious car accident. It caused severe memory loss, erasing everything before the incident. Not only that, but I was also in a coma for an entire year and only woke up a few days ago.
Of course, this is all just what they’ve told me. I feel completely disconnected from it all. My room feels foreign, and the things they tell me always sound dissonant.
I must be sick. I can’t remember anything, no matter how hard I try. I just sit here in this hard chair, twirling a black pen in my hand. A baseless sadness wells up inside me. The students around me are all hunched over their papers, writing furiously. I can only pretend to do the same.
However, I don’t understand a single thing on the test. Staring at the dense print, I feel like my future is bleak. For example:
1. At what level of physical fitness can one take or be injected with a Level 2 gene serum?
2. Once you successfully advance to become a Level 3 Genetic Warrior, how should you choose your path of progression? Compare the advantages and disadvantages of a Gene Enhancer versus a Genetic Strong Protector.
3. What Spirit attribute value is required to switch majors and pursue the path of a Mecha Master? Besides the Spirit attribute, what other prerequisites are there?
...
50. Based on the arrival time and transmission method of the Black Demon, if you could go back one year, how would you warn humanity? What did you learn from this simulated scenario?
Chen Pingchuan couldn’t understand why he was so unlucky, waking from one nightmare only to be thrust into another. Getting sent back to school was one thing, but to walk right into a midterm practice exam was another!
Although his intuition kept nagging him with an old guessing rhyme: Pick C when in doubt, avoid B like the plague, and sprinkle in some A and D.
But none of the questions are multiple-choice. How am I supposed to guess?
Wait, what *is* a multiple-choice question?
Just as Chen Pingchuan muttered this to himself, a small white object came hurtling toward his head. Chen Pingchuan didn’t dodge. It wasn’t that he couldn’t, but the scene felt eerily familiar.
THWACK!
It didn’t hurt at all. Chen Pingchuan was secretly relieved, and the corners of his mouth turned up slightly.
The attacker on the podium noticed the change in his expression and let out an angry roar.
"Chen Pingchuan, I know all about you. Some young master from a noble family, who knows where."
"How can someone who doesn’t even know the basics get into Spring City No. 1 Middle School? I don’t care what strings you pulled or what connections you have. I just want to tell you this: as long as you are in my class, I am responsible for you. You will study hard and raise your scores in the liberal arts. I will absolutely not tolerate an illiterate good-for-nothing in my classroom."
"And don’t use amnesia as an excuse. What era are we in? With current technology, there’s no way it can’t be cured. It’s not like you’re some commoner who can’t afford treatment."
The teacher on the podium wore a pair of black, half-rimmed glasses. Her refined face was fair and smooth, and she was dressed in an elegant, black, knee-length dress that lent her an intellectual air. Her curvaceous figure only added to her charm.
Unfortunately, her self-assured, indisputable manner made it impossible for Chen Pingchuan to like her.
"Understood, Teacher Fang. I’ll do my best."
"Hmph!" Seeing Chen Pingchuan back down, Teacher Fang decided not to press the issue. After all, the boy clearly had powerful connections, and it wasn’t wise to push him too far. Still, she had to say something. Otherwise, who knew what kind of trouble a young master like him could stir up.
In truth, Fang Yuxin still didn’t believe his amnesia was real. She simply saw him as one of those good-for-nothing scions of the nobility from the City of No Night. After all, while such people weren’t common, that explanation was far easier to accept than amnesia.
Her gaze swept across the classroom. Seeing the students diligently focused on their tests, Fang Yuxin nodded in satisfaction. Then, she sauntered out of the classroom.
As Fang Yuxin’s figure disappeared, the previously silent classroom suddenly erupted into noise. Anyone who’s been a student knows what an exam hall becomes without a proctor. Some students started whispering, while others grew bold enough to pass notes.
Chen Pingchuan was caught right in the middle of it. The girl in the seat ahead of him signaled for him to pass a note from the person behind him. And Chen Pingchuan, in the spirit of helping others, took the cheat sheet.
However, the probability of a cliché, dramatic scene unfolding in real life is often higher than in fiction. An act that should have taken only two seconds was forcefully interrupted after just one.
Fang Yuxin was back.
Chen Pingchuan’s right hand, holding the cheat sheet, was frozen in mid-air. It looked for all the world like he was the one being passed the answers.
"Chen... Ping... Chuan..."
Fang Yuxin’s roar echoed through the classroom, frightening the students into lowering their heads. Even the girl who had asked for his help shrank back in her seat like a startled bird, her head nearly touching her test paper.
"Teacher Fang, if I said this note isn’t mine, would you believe me?"
"What do you think?" Fang Yuxin snarled at Chen Pingchuan through clenched teeth, like a lioness whose authority had been challenged in her own territory.
"Then what if I say it *is* mine? Would you believe me?"
Fang Yuxin’s expression froze. She strode to Chen Pingchuan’s desk and looked down at the contents of the note. It was covered in densely packed, neat handwriting. Most importantly, the answers were correct. The idea that Chen Pingchuan had written it was absurd. But if he was planning to copy it, she would have to find out who passed it to him.
Fang Yuxin suddenly found herself in a dilemma. The two young ladies sitting in front of and behind Chen Pingchuan were not people she could easily offend, but she couldn’t bring herself to act against her conscience.
At that moment, the four people involved in the incident were frozen. The two students who had tried to cheat, their judge Fang Yuxin, and Chen Pingchuan—who was the only one who seemed completely unfazed.
Sensing the awkwardness, Chen Pingchuan decided to just take the fall.
"Teacher Fang, I forced my classmate to pass me the answers. If you’re going to blame someone, blame me. After all, you know my head’s not all there."
His tone carried a hint of mockery, though it was hard to tell if he was mocking himself or her.
After he finished speaking, he ignored the stares of his classmates. He stood up, placed his blank test paper on the podium, and then strode out of the classroom as if no one else existed.
Whispers followed him out.
"Wow, he’s so handsome."
"Yeah, so cool. I’ve never seen anyone dare to talk to Grandmaster Fang like that."
"Hmph, a piece of useless trash like him has the nerve to be in No. 1 Middle School."
...
I don’t know why, but even though we’re all high school students, my body seems different from theirs. He discovered that if he focused, he could hear whispers from meters away. He could see distant city towers and even sense the inexplicable emotions emanating from everyone around him.
Just as Chen Pingchuan’s thoughts began to drift, a deafening roar snapped him out of it.
"All of you, focus on your exam! If I see anyone else causing a disturbance, your score on this practice test will be a zero!"
As expected, the classroom instantly fell silent again.
