"I know," Shen Zhen replied in a calm voice. "I know that you will never treat me in the same manner as my father did to my mother, but..." She drew in a cold breath as she continued, "But I cannot trust you. The world is collapsing; no one knows the future, and no one can be sure about what will happen from here on out. Love can be beautiful, but it’s not a fundamental need for survival. It can become a burden if the dynamics are not strong enough."

"Unlike you, I am not an ability user. I am a common survivor who only knows how to save lives when it matters the most. But that is all I can do... I cannot share your burden, and I cannot help you grow stronger."

When Lu Yu went to speak, she raised her hand and said to him, "I know that you are going to tell me that it doesn’t matter and that you will stay true to me, but like I said, I cannot trust you. It’s not in my nature to trust a man."

She paused and added, "And as for Chief Yu’s offer, I will admit that it is tempting. The fact that she is offering me a fully equipped hospital... it’s really, really alluring. However, as alluring as it is, Miss Meiyue is the one who helped me to find and meet with my sisters; she has saved their lives, and for that, I owe her. Unless she asks me to leave, I have no intention of going anywhere."

"What’s more, I am not used to working under anyone. Though Chief Yu said that I will have full control over the hospital, I don’t think she will free me of her control, and that’s not something that is acceptable for me."

In her previous hospital, Shen Zhen had offended the son of the chief of the department, which led to her being suppressed for years. Even when she had worked hard enough to become the chief of the department where she worked, her files were retained, and she was not allowed to be promoted.

Of course, Shen Zhen had the option to move to another hospital, but she did not because she knew that she would soon offend one of the higher-ups of the new hospital as well. She was never good at turning a blind eye and putting the lives of others in danger when monetary benefits were present.

While others could easily refuse to deliver the babies when the families failed to pay for the surgery, Shen Zhen would agree to do it. She was a doctor; she had always valued medical skills and morals. Shen Zhen would never do anything that would make her question her own ethics.

It doesn’t matter if others got offended due to her actions and stubborn beliefs. In her mind, she only had one thought, and that was to improve her medical skills and surgical techniques and learn more about the medical skills if possible. Saving lives was her only motto. Life is too short; there is no point in sucking up to others and regretting what they had done.

Shen Zhen had seen many doctors taking monetary benefits and then regretting it when the patient died or passed away. Unless they were completely cold-hearted, they would never be able to turn a blind eye to the death of their patients.

Shen Zhen, who had seen their regrets and sorrows, would never do something foolish like them. She would never take money and power over the lives of her patients, and because of this, Shen Zhen knew that there was no way she would be able to go along with Yu Miaomiao.

That woman was blinded by the thoughts of getting power; someone like her could never become her boss.

"As long as you are not going to join them, it’s alright." Though Lu Yu was upset with how she had rejected him, he was happy that she refused to go to Yu Miaomiao and could see things much more clearly than his sister. He then got to his feet and said to Shen Zhen, "I will take my leave then... I guess you are busy."

He didn’t want to make things any more awkward than they already were.

However, just as Lu Yu walked towards the door of the office, Shen Zhen stopped him. "Mister Lu."

Lu Yu paused and turned to look at the woman. "What is it?"

"I am sorry," she apologised, which only made Lu Yu feel even worse. He thought that he had a chance, but it looked like Shen Zhen was not ready to do it.

"There is no need... You have the choice to accept or reject me as you wish." After he finished speaking, he turned around and ran away without looking at the woman any more. He was worried that if he stayed with her, he would brawl like a child for being rejected.

It was his first time proposing to a woman, and he was rejected!

Forget it, since she didn’t want him to pursue her, then he would not force her either.

Inside the office, Shen Zhen also calmed down. She was glad that Lu Yu didn’t chase her like those violent and problematic pursuers who would do anything to make her fall for them. She sighed and then adjusted her mood before picking up the files that were placed in front of her and started working.

"I am telling you that you are being a fool!"

When Lu Yu arrived at the penthouse where the Lei family lived, he heard Wan Guofu yelling at Mo He. His face was red and livid, and he was pointing at Mo He as if he had done something wrong. "You... You are really... Are you trying to get us all killed?"

Mo He, on the other hand, let out a scoff and crossed his arms, he said to Wan Guofu, "I am the only one with a sensible plan."

"Like hell you do!"
