Chapter 82: Goodbye… Han Xiu

Chapter 82: Chapter 82: Goodbye... Han Xiu

Now only An Ran remained alive. Everyone had been killed by him...

She dared not move. She dared not breathe. But now... the creature could smell her and her fear.

It rose slowly, its head tilting in an eerie manner that sent a shiver down her spine.

Its feet slowly dragged on the floor filled with blood, making strange wet and sticky sounds. Soon, it approached the desk where she was hiding.

An Ran covered her mouth. Her heart pounded so loudly she thought it might burst from her chest. She closed her eyes and prayed—to anything that would listen.

Please.

Please.

Please.

But it seemed no one was there to listen to her prayers. After all, the heavens had abandoned them completely. Or how their world had succumbed to such monsters. Was there still hope for humanity? Definitely not.

Soon, the desk was pulled aside, exposing her to the zombie’s hungry gaze.

An Ran opened her eyes meekly but met with the cold, hollow eyes of the zombie, who was once their friend.

A scream died down in her throat as he kept dragging his dangling feet towards her. She felt sweat dripping from her forehead and her tears flowing down without stopping.

Han Xiu stood still at mere inches away from her, which made An Ran suck in a cold breath with sheer fright.

Was she going to die? Finally, her end had also come, just like their other friends. She did not want to die. But did she have any option left?

Maybe if she were strong, she would have left, but she was just a coward who could not even face a monster. If not for Han Xiu and Sun Tao, who had protected her with all their might, would she have been able to live? No.

She still had to find her parents. They would be waiting for her, right? Waiting to be rescued by her and her little sister... who always clung to her, calling her sister in her toothy voice. She would still be there... right... all of them were waiting for her...

But what could she do? She was just a coward, and most importantly, she was going to die... It would be better if one coward person like her were reduced from the planet...

She had done nothing worth appreciation. Would it not be better if she just died...?

An Ran felt her entire life flashing through her eyes... and she realized she was nothing, just a burden... She was not able to save her parents or her little sister... even her friends had turned into zombies...

A choked sob escaped her mouth as she remembered all the things...

The zombie growled in a low voice at her face... An Ran immediately felt a stinking smell on her face... but she did not frown. After all, what was a smell compared to death itself?

An Ran looked at the zombie to find out he was still there, intently gazing at her...

His clawed hand trembled inches from her face. It was sharp and deadly, yet unmoving. His mouth was open wide, jaw trembling as if stuck between a scream and silence.

Blood dripped from his chin. His body was soaked in the flesh of their friends, yet something flickered again in his eyes—a faint shimmer of recognition... like he was contemplating whether he knew her or not.

An Ran’s breath caught in her throat.

She dared not move. Her knees pressed against the floor slick with blood. Her arms shook from trying to hold herself still. Her heart screamed inside her chest.

Just then, the claws lowered slightly.

Han Xiu’s finger, no longer curled in threat, hovered near her cheek and gently grazed the blood on her skin—though it never fully touched her. His cloudy eyes, once wild and empty, now looked at her with something almost like sorrow... confusion... pain.

An Ran’s tears flowed uncontrollably.

It was him. Somewhere in that monster’s body... Han Xiu was still in there.

Her chest tightened as she whispered brokenly, "Han Xiu... is that you?"

He flinched.

The question pierced whatever remained of his mind. His arms trembled violently. He took several steps back, staggering like a drunk, gripping at his head as though something inside was fighting to tear him apart.

He let out a guttural sound—not a growl, not a moan, but something eerily human. His legs buckled as he tried to resist the hunger. His breath grew ragged. His claws clutched at his chest, as if trying to rip out the beast clawing inside him.

An Ran could only watch in horror.

She recognized that flicker again—that desperate struggle in his eyes—the same flicker she had seen earlier when he hesitated after killing Sun Tao. He was trying to overcome it. He was fighting back.

But it didn’t last.

Suddenly, his body convulsed violently. His limbs jerked, twisting unnaturally. His mouth opened wide, and a bloodcurdling scream burst from his throat—a scream filled with rage, agony, and madness. The sound hit An Ran like a hammer. It was so loud, so piercing, that her hands flew to her ears in a panic. She pressed down hard, but it was useless.

The sound tore into her head.

It was as if her brain was being shredded from the inside. Her ears began to bleed, red streaks dripping down her jaw and staining her trembling hands.

Her scream was swallowed by his roar.

And when she looked up again—Han Xiu was gone.

Not physically.

But whatever humanity was left inside him had been completely consumed.

His face twisted into something inhuman. His eyes turned dead and clouded again. His trembling stopped. His hesitation vanished.

Now, he was only hunger and death.

An Ran fell back, crawling away with wide eyes as the monster stalked toward her with heavy steps. Blood smeared her hands. Her vision blurred. Her body was too weak to run.

But her soul screamed.

Not from the fear of death, but from the horror of watching someone once loved, once human, be completely erased.

She whispered through the blood and tears, "Goodbye... Han Xiu."

And the monster lunged.
