Apocalypse: I’m the Landlady of the Refuge -
Chapter 141 Pride is the Original Sin
Chapter 141: Chapter 141 Pride is the Original Sin
Guo Dacheng took a profound look back at Lin Changhe, who was sitting on the chair, his gaze landing meaningfully on Lin’s injured hands.
Though he said nothing, the mockery was off the charts.
Lin Changhe choked out, "Fuck!"
Guo Dacheng snorted with a laugh, then turned to look at the iron cage.
Noticing that only Ji Wanwan was left in the cage, Guo Dacheng’s pupils shuddered, "Where is Xu Siming?"
As the ice crystals gradually dissipated, Lin Changhe also realized that only Ji Wanwan was left in the cage.
He stood up from the chair in disbelief, muttering those four words, "Vanished into thin air?"
So his little brother hadn’t lied to him; last night, Ji Wanwan and Xu Siming had really disappeared into thin air.
He had always thought it was because he forgot to close the gate when he entered, allowing them to sneak out from the main gate, but it turned out he was wrong.
Guo Dacheng’s expression also grew serious as he began to reconsider what Lin Changhe had said.
After a brief silence, he glanced at Lin Changhe, "I’m going to report to the warden. Stay here and watch her. Don’t touch her before I get back!"
Although they were both deputies and this commanding tone irked Lin Changhe, he still hummed through his nose, which served as a response.
Considering that Lin Changhe’s wounds needed time to heal, Guo Dacheng left two men with him.
As soon as Guo Dacheng left, Lin Changhe perked up again.
He straightened up, squinting at Ji Wanwan in the cage.
Guo Dacheng had only said not to touch her, but he hadn’t said anything about not mocking her. Feeling extremely irritable, he decided it was a good time to take it out on Ji Wanwan.
With that thought in mind, Lin Changhe got up, walked over and kicked the cage, "Hey, where’s your little boyfriend? Did he run off and leave you behind?"
Ji Wanwan looked at Lin Changhe with a face that screamed ’look at this idiot’, "None of your damn business?"
Lin Changhe: "..."
Even though she was the one locked in the cage, that look made Lin Changhe inexplicably feel like he was losing ground.
He was incredibly pissed and wanted to hit someone, but between his injured hands and Guo Dacheng’s orders not to strike her, Lin Changhe felt extremely frustrated. He ended up walking around in circles on the spot, ultimately so enraged that he shrieked and ran out of the room.
Damn it! Since the apocalypse began, he had never endured such humiliation!
Inside the room, the two men who had been left behind looked at each other.
Follow? Not follow?
Not follow, after all, she is a half-infected, quite powerful; she probably doesn’t need them.
...
When Guo Dacheng came back, the warden was with him.
The warden still maintained his calm and gentle demeanor, which was utterly out of place in this blood-soaked, screaming-filled Corpse Refining Factory.
Stopping the wheelchair three steps away from the cage, the warden casually began, "Miss Ji, is Brother Xu’s ability to teleport freely also a superpower?"
Ji Wanwan, with her head down, portrayed a defiant demeanor, "Don’t ask me; I know nothing."
The warden sighed helplessly, "This makes things difficult for me."
Ji Wanwan snorted with laughter, "Too difficult? Then don’t do it."
A fleeting shadow crossed the warden’s eyes as he coaxed gently with a slight smile, "Miss Ji, Brother Xu left you behind and ran off, yet you’re still fiercely keeping his secrets?"
Ji Wanwan fell silent for a moment, then stubbornly murmured, "None of your damn business..."
The director shook his head regretfully, "It’s okay, the Lord will forgive your sins, Dacheng..."
As soon as the words fell, Guo Dacheng stepped forward respectfully, bowing his head and awaiting orders.
The director’s gaze landed on the small icebox on the table, and Guo Dacheng, understanding his intent, nodded immediately and stepped forward to take a syringe from the icebox.
Ji Wanwan’s pupils shrunk, and she stepped back in panic, "What are you planning to do?"
The director smiled faintly, "Those who carry sin must endure the punishment meted out by the Lord to receive His forgiveness and thus attain redemption."
Ji Wanwan gritted her teeth and questioned, "On what basis do you determine that I am a person of sin, and on what authority do you act as the Lord’s executioner?"
The director folded his hands together, with utmost devotion, "Because I am the Lord’s most loyal follower, the messenger who walks the earth on His behalf."
Ji Wanwan found it utterly ridiculous, "Are you trying to say, you are the Lord?"
The director merely smiled indifferently, neither confirming nor denying.
Ji Wanwan knew she had guessed correctly.
She flipped off the director, her laughter mocking, "Did I hit the mark? Hahaha, you don’t even dare to admit it. Are you afraid that the real Lord would be angry if He knew? You really are a hypocrite of the highest order!"
The director’s expression turned completely somber, "Miss Ji, you talk too much."
But Ji Wanwan just laughed even more joyfully, "Did that strike a nerve? Then you really are weak and clumsy, director. You are not up to par."
No man could endure being told "you are not up to par."
The director’s generally gentle face showed a crack of anger, "Dacheng!"
Guo Dacheng’s eyebrows raised sharply, and he promptly opened the door to the iron cage, grabbed Ji Wanwan’s arm, and fiercely jabbed the syringe into her flesh, "Young lady, you brought this upon yourself. Enjoy the taste of mutation."
As the injection pushed forward, Ji Wanwan screamed terribly, fell to her knees powerless, curled up in agony, wailing pitifully.
A flicker of satisfaction crossed the director’s eyes, "Those who sin are punished by the Lord, they get what they deserve, Dacheng. I’m tired..."
Guo Dacheng threw away the syringe in his hand, turned, and left the cage, pushing the director out of the room.
As Guo Dacheng turned around, Ji Wanwan silently stretched out a delicate hand and lightly tapped the syringe on the ground, which instantly disappeared.
Walking down the corridor, the director glanced at the zombie pit, "Keep an eye on Ji Wanwan. If she can’t withstand the ordeal, throw her to the zombies; if she endures, increase the dosage again."
Guo Dacheng showed a puzzled look.
Up until now, no one had survived a second increased dosage. The director wanted Ji Wanwan dead.
But if that was the case, why bother with the trial of the drug?
Probably guessing that Guo Dacheng might be puzzled, the director continued, "I think this Ji Wanwan isn’t as impulsive and brainless as she appears. On the surface, it seems she is dependent on Xu Siming, but in reality, it has always been Xu Siming who follows her advice."
Guo Dacheng tried to voice his own doubt, "Could it be that Xu Siming loves Ji Wanwan deeply?"
The director scoffed disdainfully, "Dacheng, put yourself in his shoes; if you were a high-level superpower awakener and the woman you deeply loved was a common person, at a time like this, would you follow every single one of her plans?"
Guo Dacheng choked.
Indeed, there wouldn’t be many men who would follow the suggestions of a mere mortal during such times, even if that person was the woman they loved.
Because arrogance is the original sin.
His gaze toward the director became more respectful, "I understand."
...
Inside the room.
Ji Wanwan was curled up on the floor, pretending to be dead...
