Apocalypse: I’m the Landlady of the Refuge -
Chapter 137: The Limping Man
Chapter 137: Chapter 137: The Limping Man
Wanwan: "?"
What’s with the tone of purely official business?
Why did she suddenly feel like she was about to be taken into custody?
Zhan Yu, beside her, wore a face filled with amusement, nearly bursting with a teasing smile.
Wanwan gave him an irritated glare before responding to the messenger, "Okay then, would you mind coming back to the room with me to call my friend?"
The person, dead serious, replied distinctly, "Yes."
Wanwan: "..."
Back in the mud house, Wanwan asked the messenger to wait at the door while she changed her clothes.
Once inside, she made a shushing gesture and then pointed at Xu Siming’s shoes, which were also muddy.
She quickly took out a pair of shoes from the System Space and changed them with Xu Siming, whispering, "The director wants to see us, and the messenger is waiting outside. Since it’s the director, we should wear something more formal."
Xu Siming immediately grasped the situation and nodded, "Okay, I’ll wear this outfit."
The two of them changed their clothes and shoes and walked out together.
At the door, the person who heard the noise subconsciously looked at their clothes.
The next second: "?"
There, Wanwan wore a floral shirt, big shorts, and a pair of casual sneakers.
On the other hand, Xu Siming was in a red tank top and blue shorts, with a grey solar-powered fan hat on his head and green mesh sneakers on his feet, his sloppy belt dragging along.
The messenger was forcibly composed for at least ten seconds before he regained his senses and couldn’t help but laugh out of frustration.
This is dressing more formally?
Are they out of their minds!
And the director still wants to meet them personally?
Really, what was the director thinking!
Gripes aside, the mission assigned by the director had to be diligently completed.
Under the overwhelming pressure of all eyes on them, the messenger bravely escorted the two conspicuously dressed individuals across most of the refugee shelter to the director’s dwelling.
Unlike the common mud houses, the director lived in a separate Small Bamboo Courtyard.
At first glance, this small courtyard seemed quite secluded and independent.
Wanwan couldn’t help but touch her chin.
This feels nice. She’d build such a Small Bamboo Courtyard back at the base.
Xu Siming, who could instantly tell what Wanwan was thinking, drawled closer, "Remember to add a room for me."
Wanwan: "?"
No, seriously, are you a mind reader now?
After entering the Small Bamboo Courtyard, they soon arrived outside the director’s room.
The messenger gently knocked on the door.
Upon hearing a response from inside, the messenger visibly relaxed, glaring at Wanwan and the other with distaste before making a hasty escape, leaving Wanwan in a mix of laughter and tears.
"Come in."
The voice of Lin Changhe came from inside the room, not as kind as during the day but with a hint of harshness.
Wanwan and the other exchanged glances, pushed the door open, and walked into the room.
The room was bright and tidy, with a touch of elegance.
An wheelchair was placed right in the center, its occupant facing away from Ji Wanwan and the other, making it impossible to discern his face or age.
Ji Wanwan tried to sense the energy emanating from this man but realized she couldn’t detect anything.
An ordinary person?
How could that be?
How could an ordinary person have so many people obeying his command?
If not, then this person’s Superpower Level must be very high, high enough to be completely controlled at will, making it undetectable to others.
Could such a person really exist?
Ji Wanwan didn’t know, she just stayed on her guard.
Two people stood beside the man, they were Lin Changhe and Guo Dacheng.
Guo Dacheng bowed slightly, motionless.
Lin Changhe, however, clenched his teeth with a hateful gaze, "Director, they were the ones who broke into the Corpse Refining Factory last night!"
Upon hearing this, the man in the wheelchair slightly moved, and Guo Dacheng immediately reached out to support the wheelchair, gently pushing it to turn around.
The man turned around, sporting a face so ordinary that once thrown into a crowd, it would be hard to spot again, lacking any aura of superiority, only exhibiting calm and gentleness, even a bit morbid frailty.
In the early autumn season, this man was already wearing a thin knitted jacket, with a thin blanket draped over his waist and legs.
Upon closer inspection, it was not hard to realize that one of his legs under the blanket was missing.
Seeing Ji Wanwan staring at the Director’s leg, Guo Dacheng stepped forward to block her view, his tone harsh, "Do not disrespect the Director!"
Ji Wanwan slightly raised her eyebrows, subtly shifting her gaze away.
Such a loyal dog indeed...
The Director, seemingly unconcerned, spoke, "Dacheng, the young lady means no harm. Don’t be too nervous."
Guo Dacheng’s expression softened slightly, and he stepped back, standing properly by the Director’s side again.
The Director openly observed Ji Wanwan and the other for a while, then made a welcoming gesture, indicating for them to sit, "Don’t mind it, my friends. Dacheng isn’t very articulate, but he’s not bad at heart; he’s just overly concerned about me, so his tone was a bit fierce."
There were two cups of tea on the small table inside the room, the brew clear and emitting a faint steam, indicating it was freshly made not long ago, specifically waiting for their arrival.
However, once sitting on the low stools next to the small table, Ji Wanwan and her companion would have to slightly curl up their bodies. If a conflict arose, their movements would be greatly hindered, and they would instantly be at a disadvantage.
Therefore, they didn’t sit.
With the air of one unafraid of tigers, Ji Wanwan shook her head decisively, "Let’s skip sitting. Just tell us, why have you summoned us? Once we’re done here, Old Xu and I still have to go earn some money, or else we’ll starve to death."
Guo Dacheng, who had just moved to the back, looked up again, his expression unexpectedly furrowing, "Watch your tone when you speak to me!"
"Ah!" Ji Wanwan was startled, whimpering pitifully twice as she hid behind Xu Siming, grabbing his clothes tightly, "Old Xu, he’s really fierce."
Xu Siming’s mouth twitched slightly, "..."
He almost couldn’t hold back a laugh. That was a close one.
The Director gave Guo Dacheng a look, and the latter immediately shifted from a tiger back to a kitten.
In that instant of exchanged glances, Ji Wanwan saw a glimpse of imposing authority from this lame man.
This man was indeed not as frail as he appeared.
The Director then turned his gaze to Ji Wanwan hiding behind Xu Siming, smiling warmly, "Little girl, don’t be afraid. Dacheng won’t scold you anymore."
Ji Wanwan tilted her head, blinking her eyes, appearing less frightened but still not daring to come out from behind Xu Siming.
The Director smiled helplessly, "I just came to have a chat with you, nothing else. If you’re worried I’ll delay your earning money for supplies, I’ll cover today’s supplies for you. How about that?"
Ji Wanwan’s eyes brightened, quickly running out from behind Xu Siming, "Yay! Uncle, whatever you want to talk about, I’ll make sure you’re entertained!"
The Director couldn’t help but burst into laughter, "Hahaha, you’re such a funny kid..."
