Apocalypse: I’m the Landlady of the Refuge -
Chapter 119: The Flaw in the Heavenly Dao
Chapter 119: Chapter 119: The Flaw in the Heavenly Dao
With the annihilation of the zombie horde, the base’s superpower users all came to gather around Ji Wanwan.
Team 1, Zhou Kai: "We couldn’t find any trace of Baize on the battlefield, but we can’t rule out the possibility of Baize having escaped."
Team 2, Xu Siming: "The entire horde of zombies has been wiped out, and since everyone was very tired, we have yet to extract the Crystal Cores."
Team 3, Ji Xing: "The remaining superpower users from the Baize Union have all been captured. There are 17 who surrendered, and our people are watching them."
Team 4, Father Ji: "Other than the 9 teammates and Xia Li who were sacrificed, we now have 26 people left. The severely wounded members are already receiving treatment from Wood Element Superpower Users, and all other members have assembled."
After the reports of the four teams, pain was evident in Ji Wanwan’s eyes; after all, 9 people had been sacrificed.
Taking a deep breath, she lifted her eyelids and her gaze swept over the assembled superpower users of the base.
Everyone was more or less bruised, but the hope and relief in their eyes, like flickering sparks, dispersed the gloom and sorrow in Ji Wanwan’s heart.
The dead were gone, and she had to lead those who had survived towards a more distant future, carrying hope.
After soothing and encouraging everyone, Ji Wanwan divided the personnel into two groups: one to return to the base, and the other to follow her in cleaning up several divisions of the Baize Union.
The group returning to the base was led by Father Ji and Xu Siming, assisted by Ji Xing, Ming Jing, and Wen Yuheng.
Father Ji was mainly responsible for arranging for those severely injured, while Xu Siming was mainly in charge of post-battle reconstruction and guarding against any counterattack by the fleeing members of Baize Union.
The group following Ji Wanwan comprised mostly members whose combat strength was relatively intact, with core members including Zhou Kai and Wu Xun.
The reason for bringing Wu Xun was that he and his brothers were quite familiar with the Baize Union, and she could quickly locate several divisions of the Baize Union with their guidance.
The Baize Union had four divisions in total. The Bath City division had already been raided by Ji Wanwan and a few others; there was no point in raiding it again.
The group went directly to the division in charge of firearms and ammunition and took away all the materials inside; next, they went to the division managing the financial resources and similarly took all the materials.
Finally, Ji Wanwan and her team arrived at the underground casino division.
Unlike the previous blindfolded entry, this time she directly faced the underground casino and only then realized how enormous it was.
It had not only five underground levels but also six above-ground levels, and almost all core documents of the Baize Union were here.
Ji Wanwan had Zhou Kai lead people to scavenge resources while she stayed in the document room to browse through the documents.
Seeing these notebooks filled with human experiment data and photographs and CDs recording audio-visual information made Ji Wanwan’s stomach churn, sending chills down her spine and making her feel extremely nauseous.
According to the dates recorded on the experiment documents, these human experiments had started from the very first day of the apocalypse.
The first day had started...
Ji Wanwan’s fingertips lightly tapped on an experiment log: [System, could Baize also be a reborn person?]
System: [Host, why do you ask that?]
Ji Wanwan: [If not, how else could these laboratories have been built in advance, and how could the human experiment data be so precisely detailed?]
The System was silent.
Ji Wanwan further asked: [Moreover, if Baize hadn’t been planning for a long time, how could he have started capturing zombies and ordinary people for experiments on the first day of the apocalypse?]
Reflecting on Baize’s similar superpowers to her own, Ji Wanwan felt even more doubtful: [System, do you know, sometimes when I see Baize use those superpowers, I get very bewildered and feel like he is another me in this world.]
System: [The Host is the Host, Baize is Baize, the Host’s mind is pure and kind, while Baize is sinister and ruthless; you are completely different. There’s no way he could be another you in this world.]
"Don’t overthink it, Baize might just be a loophole in the Heavenly Dao, and when the Heavenly Dao remembers, it will naturally erase him."
Ji Wanwan’s smile was not quite a smile as she curved her lips: "System, why do you think that this loophole is him and not me?"
The System was silent for a long while: "You are my host, and naturally, I would not hope that you are this loophole."
Ji Wanwan laughed softly and said no more.
The System seemed to know something, but she had asked it about Baize no less than ten times before and after, and each time it would not give a direct answer.
So, what else was the System hiding?
What the answer was, Ji Wanwan did not know; she only knew that the System she had always trusted and relied on might not be so reliable after all.
"Boss Ji! Can you hear me?"
Suddenly, the voice from the walkie-talkie strapped to her waist interrupted Ji Wanwan’s thoughts.
She picked up the walkie-talkie: "What’s the matter, Brother Kai?"
Zhou Kai’s voice carried a hint of helplessness: "There’s a discovery on the fourth floor, why don’t you come up and take a look?"
Ji Wanwan’s brow furrowed, and she immediately moved: "What’s the situation?"
As soon as her words fell, she had already teleported to the fourth floor.
Seeing the swarm of people in front of her, Ji Wanwan was stunned for a moment, then turned her head to look for Zhou Kai.
Zhou Kai put down the walkie-talkie and gave Ji Wanwan a helpless look: "They are all ordinary people who were captured, probably to be used for experiments."
Ji Wanwan’s throat tightened: "So many?"
A quick glance around revealed there were about thirty or forty people here, most of whom were skin and bones, filthy and stinking, apparently having been detained for a long time, and for a long while they had not eaten well or worn warm clothes.
The presence of many people meant chaos; if she were to bring all these people back to the base, it would undoubtedly require a lot of effort to manage them. However, the base had just gone through a battle, and it was currently a time of rebuilding. Ji Wanwan did not want to waste too much energy on unrelated people.
Yet these people were so innocent...
Especially since there were a few young children among them.
Looking at their frightened and insecure eyes, Ji Wanwan felt terribly upset inside.
Although the zombies in Liancheng had almost been completely eradicated, who could say for sure if there were any that slipped through the net?
If she just left them unattended, there was a fear that many of these people would die once they went out.
Ji Wanwan felt somewhat headache, and gazed solemnly at Zhou Kai: "What do you think?"
Zhou Kai pondered for a moment: "Hmm... we should save them. There’s a lot that needs to be done at the base right now; they might be able to help out somehow. At the very least, even if they can’t help, we don’t lack their share of food. And, taking a step back for a moment, we are all survivors, we can’t just stand by and watch them die. After all, the base needs to grow in the future, and we must maintain a good reputation, right?"
Zhou Kai rarely said so much in one breath, and Ji Wanwan pursed her lips and seriously absorbed his words before finally nodding: "You make sense; so let’s do as you said, and bring them back to the base!"
Having made this decision, the group took everything they could scavenge and then set off back to the base.
As they passed the ruins of the battle and the remains of zombie hordes, the rescued survivors were terrified to the point of incontinence. Zhou Kai and his men took a while to calm them down.
Just as Ji Wanwan, carrying documents, supplies, and survivors, was about to step into the base, everything in front of her froze, and the voice of the System rang in her ears—
