Apocalypse: I’m the Landlady of the Refuge -
Chapter 103: Early Attack
Chapter 103: Chapter 103: Early Attack
"Hiss, what are you two sneakily planning over here behind everyone’s back?" Ji Xing suddenly popped up, completely killing the mood.
He immediately set his sights on the two skewers of meat in front of Ji Wanwan, "Yo, those skewers look pretty good. Sis, are you going to eat them? If not, I will!"
Without waiting for Ji Wanwan’s response, Ji Xing just grabbed the skewers.
"No! Xingxing, wait a sec?!"
"Put down the meat or I’ll chop off your paws!"
Qi Hao and Ji Wanwan said at the same time.
Slightly tipsy, Ji Xing blinked, instantly feeling half-sober.
He weakly put down the meat, "Wow, really? Over just two skewers, is it worth it?"
The questioned duo once again spoke in unison, "It is!!!"
Ji Xing: "..."
And with that, the rest of his buzz faded away.
Seeing the overly close distance between his sister and Qi Hao, Ji Xing vaguely understood something.
Oh! I’m wrecking a good thing here!
Realizing this, Ji Xing immediately acted coy, "Alrighty! I’m leaving! You two carry on!"
The commotion caught everyone’s attention.
Xu Siming, who was already quite drunk, sensed alarm bells ringing in his mind and instantly stood up.
He staggered over, offering his glass to Ji Wanwan, "Haozi! Show you’re a man and down this drink!"
Ji Wanwan: "..."
She silently lifted his hand, straightened it out towards Qi Hao, and flashed a ’this is going to be good’ smile at him.
The latter raised an eyebrow, smiling with a hooked lip, and filled his own glass to the brim.
Can’t lose face!
Especially not in front of Wanwan!
Zhou Kai looked on leisurely, "Tsk tsk tsk, Xu Siming, you’re speaking with a slur already, sure you can outdrink Haozi?"
Xu Siming immediately got defensive, "Hey? Don’t talk about one Haozi, I could drink you two under the table no problem! I am a Level 10 Water Element superpower awakener!"
Zhou Kai: "..."
Like, we’re just drinking, why bring superpowers into this, man!
Can’t you take a joke?!
Simply unbearable!
Zhou Kai hissed and also came over with his glass, "Old Xu, if you are a man, down this drink!"
Watching the three of them start a drinking storm, Ji Wanwan: "..."
In the corner, Ming Jing, who had been ecstatically showing off skewers, got excited, "Wow, what a chaotic scene! Love it! So entertaining! Don’t stop!"
Like her, Xia Li, who was also busy flaunting skewers, glanced over and then continued disinterestedly, "A bunch of idiots, what’s so good about drinking? Skewers are where it’s at!"
And so, what started as a nice small squad gathering ended up as a wild rumpus of drunkards.
Ji Wanwan, amused and exasperated, watched everyone’s antics and ended up being pulled into the fray by this crew of drunkards, turning into one of the wild participants.
In a private space.
Wu Xun, who was with the kids, and Wen Yuheng looked through the window at the reveling group in the pavilion, their feelings evolving from misunderstanding to envy.
To be able to have a group of trustworthy friends to laugh and mess around with at such a time is a kind of happiness in itself.
...
The aftermath of the revelry was...
The next day, the group woke up with hangovers, each looking pale and dispirited, looking very much like zombies drained by a female ghost.
Seeing the disheveled appearance of the group, even the usually gentle Wen Yuheng couldn’t help but laugh.
Ji Wanwan, who hadn’t drunk much, was in better shape. When she woke up, she went to the restaurant to get a bowl of millet porridge to soothe her stomach.
As she was drinking it, a member of the Defense Team who had been out scouting reported that a horde of zombies had been spotted 30 kilometers from the base. The commanding features of the horde were not clear, making it impossible to pinpoint their location exactly.
The horde was advancing towards the base, and at their current speed, they would arrive in about seven hours.
Ji Wanwan’s hand paused slightly as she was drinking the porridge.
Baize had made a move!
"Wuu—"
The base’s alarm sounded, everyone entered Level 1 alert, and they quickly took their assigned positions as per the arrangements made the previous day.
Meanwhile, as Wu Xun and Wen Yuheng were spending time with Yinyin and Xiao Lu, they exchanged glances.
The attack had come earlier!
The Baize Union indeed planned to catch the base off guard! Fortunately, the leader wasn’t fooled!
After sounding the alarm, Ji Wanwan went back to her room to change into more practical sportswear. When she re-emerged, her team members had already assembled.
She smiled contentedly and stretched out her hand.
The members looked at each other and then placed their hands over Ji Wanwan’s.
"May everything go smoothly!"
The voices of the young men and women, filled with hope and vitality, echoed in the empty hall, inexplicably uplifting.
Even though the battle hadn’t begun yet, Wu Xun had a momentary feeling as if they had already won, and his blood surged with excitement.
After a brief, morale-boosting speech, the vanguard of the Defense Team moved out.
Eliminating the zombie horde didn’t take much time, which lifted everyone’s spirits; the anticipated battle wasn’t as frightening as they had imagined.
However, Ji Wanwan was not so optimistic.
The zombie horde was just an appetizer; the Four Elders of the Baize Union hadn’t appeared yet. The real struggle was still to come.
Yet, these were considerations for Ji Wanwan, not to be shared as they would only disrupt the morale. Thus, she kept quiet, only encouraging everyone to continue the effort and win the final victory.
Sitting in the Inner City’s monitoring room, Ji Wanwan watched the surveillance screens with furrowed brows.
She felt uneasy but couldn’t pinpoint what was odd. Watching the screens, she suddenly had an idea: "System, open the shop."
"Beep—"
The shop interface appeared before Ji Wanwan.
She opened the department section and quickly scrolled through, eventually finding the surveillance cameras.
After quickly reviewing the features of the cameras and discovering they could only monitor within a 500-meter range, she frowned in dissatisfaction.
She pondered briefly: "System, can this camera be upgraded?"
System: "Yes, the Host can also upgrade by using points."
Ji Wanwan: "What is the highest configuration it can be upgraded to?"
System: "It can be upgraded to a high-definition surveillance covering a 10-kilometer radius, with an integrated infrared scanning feature that can monitor underground life forms in addition to those on the surface."
That was exactly the kind of camera she wanted!
Without hesitation, Ji Wanwan bought eight cameras: "Upgrade to maximum level, and help me install them around the perimeter of the base."
System: "Certainly, Host."
As the upgrade was completed, a large screen magically appeared in the monitoring room with eight smaller screens displaying real-time images from the eight cameras.
Before she could marvel at the System’s efficiency, Ji Wanwan stood up in shock.
Looking at the dense, moving red dots on the screen, Ji Wanwan’s scalp tingled, and she felt overwhelmed.
Her fingers twitched, and she quickly grabbed the walkie-talkie: "Senior! Haozi! Come to the monitoring room immediately!"
