Chapter 196: Chapter 91 Art Teacher
"Empty, empty, empty, empty, empty, empty—"
The space outside the elevator car was filled with violent gusts of wind, and intense vibrations continuously jolted the soles of Lin Yi’s feet. It was as if he had entered a launcher on the Earth-Moon orbit, sprinting forward with reckless abandon amidst the roaring and rumbling of the engine.
Lin Yi took a deep breath, then held it in. For a moment, he felt that just a bit more weight would turn him into the last straw that broke the elevator apart...
"Whoosh, whoosh—"
The elevator seemed to be traversing an endlessly long wind tunnel. It was unclear how long it had been before the terrifying roar began to gradually subside.
As the sound of the wind faded, the elevator also started to slow down until it finally stabilized.
"Ding!"
The elevator arrived.
A strong urge to open his eyes surged in Lin Yi’s heart. In contrast, Mao Feiyang was exceptionally obedient, keeping his eyes tightly shut, clutching the iron chain tightly, and leaning on the Dormitory Supervisor’s shoulder.
The Dormitory Supervisor’s body was trembling, and his mouth was incessantly muttering some dormitory regulations, but Mao Feiyang turned a deaf ear to anything outside himself, not understanding a single word.
"Clang... clang!"
The elevator door opened, and a chilly feeling suddenly surged into the long-sealed elevator. The cold air penetrated Mao Feiyang’s trouser legs, causing him to shiver involuntarily.
"Whew... whew..."
The flame of the old kerosene lamp flickered violently, instantly pulling the atmosphere to a peak of uncertainty.
The Dormitory Supervisor couldn’t help but gasp, "Don’t be scared, don’t be scared..."
"Er... I’m not scared," Mao Feiyang whispered.
"I’m just psyching myself up. Don’t open your eyes, whatever you do, don’t open your eyes, if you do, you’re done for."
"Uh... okay, I’ll do as you say."
"Grip the iron chain tightly, follow me," the Dormitory Supervisor inhaled deeply, then mustered up the courage to step out of the elevator.
The moment Mao Feiyang stepped out of the elevator, the doors behind him closed with a "clang" and shut tightly.
Lin Yi and Mao Feiyang were equally blind, only able to sense their surroundings through feeling and intuition.
Through a rough perception, Lin Yi sensed that they were probably in a spacious indoor corridor, where there was wind, but it was faint, and the sound of flames burning could be heard, yet the temperature was very cold.
The ground beneath their feet did not seem to be the floor of the dormitory building, nor did it resemble the floor tiles of any place on campus. It felt more like some kind of stone slab, somewhat uneven and pitted, yet overall it had been polished quite smooth.
He concluded that the ground had originally been smooth, and the pits had formed over time.
"Tap... tap... tap..."
In the darkness, his and the Dormitory Supervisor’s footsteps were distinctly audible, aside from that, the cold sound of the iron chain and the faint sound of the wind.
But Lin Yi’s heart gradually filled with a sense of unease. This discomfort became increasingly intense over the next dozen steps, and eventually, it was as if countless ants were crawling over his body.
He felt as though he was being "watched" by something: an indifferent, malicious, chilling breath, twisting like a viper, following behind him.
No, not just behind him, but in all directions.
"Rustle, rustle, rustle..."
"Rustle, rustle, rustle..."
From all directions came the sound of stone scraping against the ground, making Lin Yi’s spine tingle, and what was even more hair-raising was the sensation that the same "rustling" noise was right above his head...
A single thought emerged in both Lin Yi’s and Mao Feiyang’s minds without consultation:
[All the sculptures on campus are busts, and they are all stored in the Art Building.]
"So..." Lin Yi’s heart skipped a beat, "This place must be the legendary... Art Building?!"
At first, it didn’t seem too terrifying, but upon realizing that the sculptures at S University weren’t traditional sculptures but rather deeply contaminated creatures, even undeserving of the term "creatures," the words "Art Building" took on an extremely terrifying significance.
"Sculpture Headquarters."
Lin Yi felt a chill all over his body. He had a keener sense than Mao Feiyang, and at that moment, it was as if he had a God’s-eye view, Tang Sanzang and his disciples entering the Xiao Lei Yin Temple.
He could sense that the spirits and gods from all directions were demons and devils. But now, he had to summon his courage to proceed alongside the Dormitory Supervisor.
"It’s the oil lamps!" he suddenly realized, "The realm created by the oil lamp’s light screen dispels the darkness, allowing me and the Dormitory Supervisor to be in a safe condition!"
"But the Dormitory Supervisor told Maozi not to open his eyes... which means, even with the oil lamps, it’s not safe enough, does he need to ’not see’ them as well?"
"Is it ’not seeing them’ or is there some other underlying logic at play?"
Lin Yi knew Mao Feiyang was safe, so after suppressing the intense discomfort in his heart, he used the perfect synchronization to start theorizing.
"That’s it... The student regulations initially said not to look back, probably also to prevent us from facing the sculptures head-on."
When the layer of the campus collapsed, behind them was filled with that "rustling" sound, the unique "footsteps" or rather the "breath" of non-human entities moving. Hence, with various factors correlated, one could easily arrive at this superficial conclusion.
Obviously, the sculptures in the Art Building seemed to be even more formidable. So their placement was not limited to behind Lin Yi but could be scattered in all directions.
Therefore, "don’t look back" evolved into the more brainless "keep your eyes shut, don’t look."
