Chapter 153: Chapter 70 The Unexpected Happened as Expected
X023 Year May 7th, 21:06.
"Ding!"
With a crisp chime, the elevator came to a stable halt in mid-operation.
All five cautious people inside set their eyes on the floor indicator.
"14".
Lin Yi narrowed his eyes; they had reached their floor.
The entire process could be described as smooth and uneventful, simply because he followed one basic rule—[Do not try to understand how the elevator works].
But he hadn’t let down his guard; on the contrary, he was even more cautious.
Because he clearly understood that the main event was yet to come.
The elevator shook slightly, and the faint sound of friction traveled along the walls to Lin Yi’s feet. His breathing slowed down, his whole being became still, yet his muscles tensely coiled, resembling a bow gradually being drawn.
In the span of a single breath, Lin Yi had mentally braced himself for any unforeseen situations that might arise.
"Clang... Clang!"
The elevator doors opened slowly, like uncorking a mud-sealed wine jar, and cold air began to pour in.
"Hoo-whooo—"
From the crevices of the elevator exterior, the anxious sound of the wind hissed, sending a chill down one’s spine.
Lin Yi and Wei Liang stepped out of the elevator.
"Clang!"
With the closing of the elevator doors, Lin Yi felt as if only a cold wall remained behind him.
He glanced at his watch.
21:07.
A direct elevator with a capacity of ten passengers had taken several minutes to go up one floor.
Such a duration would be considered explosive in any other context.
"We have almost an hour to get back to the dormitory... If all goes well, there’s enough time," Lin Yi thought to himself.
But... having been through so much, he felt the words "if all goes well" were like a joke when strung together.
He shifted his gaze, taking in the surroundings.
At first glance, nothing seemed amiss with the Dormitory building’s corridor, which was three meters wide, considerably spacious compared to his original room.
As the dormitory guide stated, the dormitory’s inner corridors were circular, so from his perspective, the white incandescent lights on the ceiling guided the path like indicator lights at a highway turn at night, bending into the distance with a subtle arc.
The incandescent lights cast an orange hue across the hallway, making the entire area plainly visible. On either side of the corridor stood dormitories facing each other.
To his left, the door read "1401"; to his right, "1402".
From the layout, it seemed the inner side of the curve held consecutive door numbers, while the outer side displayed the even-numbered rooms.
By walking past seven sets of dormitories, they could reach the predetermined Room 1414.
"Up until now... everything is normal," Lin Yi mentally noted.
For some reason, stepping out of the elevator relieved some of the oppression and discomfort he had felt earlier, yet the fully enclosed corridor still left him feeling somewhat stifled and irritated.
Lin Yi took a deep breath, ready to head back to the dormitory first.
At that moment, a somewhat cold hand silently landed on Lin Yi’s shoulder.
It was Wei Liang’s hand.
"Damn, Liangzi, you scared the hell out of me!" Lin Yi’s sense of pressure was somewhat dispersed by Wei Liang’s ghostly touch.
Turning his head, he saw Wei Liang’s somewhat pale lips and his nervous expression.
"Wasn’t it said that Liangzi has a wealth of experience living in dorms? Why does he seem even more nervous than me, visiting for the first time?" Lin Yi puzzled.
"Liangzi, are you alright?" he asked with concern.
"I’m fine... just a bit cold,"
Wei Liang’s gaze flitted around the hallway, as if on high alert for something invisible.
Even Wei Liang himself didn’t seem to realize he was acting slightly neurotic.
"Cold...?" Lin Yi was internally surprised, feeling that something really wasn’t right with Wei Liang.
This corridor... isn’t cold at all.
"It’s indeed a bit chilly, huh," he responded, feigning agreement.
Wei Liang muttered to himself, "That’s normal... The dorms in the campus are quite damp. You don’t feel it now, but stay longer, and you’ll see..."
As he spoke, he exhaled.
Lin Yi’s pupils dilated slightly.
He noticed when Wei Liang breathed out, there was a warm breath from his nostrils and mouth, but amidst that warm air, fine white ice crystals were faintly mingled.
It was the same as what he had observed with the headteacher.
"Is Liangzi also contaminated?!"
Lin Yi’s heart skipped a beat. He badly wanted to ask, "Liangzi, you said you survived seven days, what the hell happened in the last two days?!"
But he knew he couldn’t say that.
He recalled the headteacher’s words that a will of steel was the key to resisting contamination.
So...
"Liangzi has always believed he’s fine, so even if he’s lying to himself, could it be that with such a ’will,’ he can resist the contamination?"
Because "I think I’m fine," thus "I really am fine," even if "there’s a problem," then "it’s not my problem"?
"What kind of divine strategy is this?!"
Lin Yi was somewhat grateful he hadn’t blindly followed Wei Liang’s approach from the start; with his so-called "High Sensitivity," he could never have achieved Wei Liang’s level of "self-deception."
Because Wei Liang had deceived himself, Lin Yi was certain he couldn’t remind him now, nor could he even slightly nudge him toward such thoughts.
