Chapter 66: Shadow of Divinity - Part II
Keeping one hand in my pocket, I advanced along the line of nobles knocked to the ground.
My body halted as I reached the queen. I cupped her cheeks and declared, "Your blood is tainted; the gods have poisoned you."
As I turned and approached Lucy, I reached for her hair, idly twirling it. "Your blood is tainted; the gods have poisoned you," I uttered.
’Snap!’
The ground gave way to a throne made of black stone, seemingly absorbing all light that touched it, and I sat on it.
The gravity wave vanished, allowing the nobles to stand once more. But one dared to lock eyes with me, and in that moment, he became a living inferno.
"You are forbidden from looking at me unless I allow it. Prostrate yourselves before the only true god."
My command was met with immediate obedience; the nobles prostrated themselves. Cupcake, Evelyn, and the two royal guards followed suit, their foreheads pressed to the dirt.
"I want you to think as hard as that puny brain of yours can manage: is this an illusion or reality?"
’Snap’
Everything snapped back to the moment just before the glass jar began to levitate.
The nobles stood as if nothing had occurred, while Lana and Riona stared at me, their hands hovering over their sword hilts.
Small murmurs erupted as heads turned amongst the nobles. They all carefully avoided looking directly into my blue eyes, which glowed with a faint blue aura.
As I observed my surroundings, I noticed the tulips were untouched and the noble who’d been set on fire seemed perfectly fine.
What just happened? Did I imagine it all in my head?
"Let the sacred rites commence." A guard said, before blowing his trumpet.
It was the very same guard, repeating his prior statement, just before I lost control of my body.
My knees buckled and I nearly fell, but Cupcake helped me regain my balance.
My shaking hands caused me to drop the glass jar, which Lucy deftly caught.
"Excuse me!" I said, taking the jar from her.
"Your eyes have seen nothing, your ears have heard nothing." The Queen suddenly spoke.
At the queen’s command, the murmurs ceased, leaving the nobles looking even more confused.
"Did I forget something?" Lord Henry spoke, glancing at another man dressed in a suit beside him.
Tilting his head, the man scratched his short, dark purple hair. "I feel like I just woke up from a dream," he said.
"Proceed with the farewell speech; everyone’s waiting for you," Evelyn whispered calmly into my ear, her tone showing no distress.
Could it be that the queen had successfully wiped their memories?
I steadied my grip on the glass jar containing Lady Beatrice’s ashes and lifted it like a trophy.
The two lines of nobles, flanking me on the left and right, glanced at the glass jar.
"We gather today under a sky that weeps with us, to bid farewell to Lady Beatrice," I announced, my gaze falling on the Queen, who was clad in a white royal gown, adorned with a golden necklace and earrings.
"Many of you knew Lady Beatrice in various roles: as a family member, a doctor, or a business executive. I, however, knew her simply as a woman, a lady with a heart as soft as a dove’s feather."
Turning my head, I looked at Lucas. His red eyes were on the verge of overflowing. "Lady Beatrice was my first waltz partner, and she honored me by letting me walk her down the aisle at the Bell Cathedral’s mass wedding. But instead of protecting her, I killed her. I murdered Joseph, causing his unique skill to trigger, sniffing her life away."
Lucas’s fist clenched, his teeth gritted, and he stared at me like an enraged bear. My eyes moved from him to the woman beside him, her long silver hair nearly touching the ground. "I ask no one’s forgiveness for what I did. Beatrice died in my arms, tears on her cheeks, pleading for help I couldn’t give. I watched as her body grew cold and she fell into an eternal slumber."
From the long-haired lady, my gaze moved to Lana, then to Riona, before fixing on the Queen. "I am the shadow of Divinity, the gate between heaven and hell, the Vessel of the Demon God. I swore to trust Beatrice, to believe the dirty little secret she revealed, the one you are all hiding from the world."
My words seemed to flip a switch among the high-ranking nobles; their innocent stares hardened into glares, threatening to cut me to pieces.
I turned and placed Lady Beatrice’s ashes into the coffin as the queen took measured steps toward the grave.
Upon arriving, she eyed the coffin, specifically the glass jar at its center. "Tell me," she asked, looking at me, "is Beatrice okay?"
"Yes," my mouth replied on its own.
"Did Beatrice tell you something only the two of us know about?"
"Yes."
"You promised to keep it a secret," the queen ordered.
"As you wish, Your Majesty," my mouth agreed, and I bowed, avoiding her direct gaze.
How come the queen can control my limbs? Is she using a unique skill?
The Queen turned, and Lana and Riona mirrored her movement as she walked a meter away. It was then that I regained control of my body.
"You failed to erase my memory," I declared. "I recall everything, and you know I’m the reincarnation of the Demon King. Why are you avoiding the truth? I am the key you’ve been waiting for."
The Queen paused, glancing at me over her shoulder. "The Demon King can rewrite reality with a snap of his fingers, turn mountains to dust with his breath. Can you do that?"
I stood silent, unable to respond. I watched her return to her position and stand tall.
The other nobles approached the grave, gazing at the glass jar and paying their respects to Lady Beatrice.
Only the Night Squad, the Duke, Lana, and the Queen knew Lady Beatrice wasn’t truly dead.
After all the nobles had visited, Lucy, Evelyn, and Cupcake used diamond and steel shovels to bury the coffin.
The Queen’s question had left me speechless. Would she only recognize me as the true Demon King if I became powerful enough to bend reality?
