An Angel Lives in the Academy
Chapter 4: The Angel Caught in a Test (1)

Hongwol brought Leffrey back to his home. First of all, she wasn't completely out of danger herself, and since she already knew where he lived, she could visit him 'anytime'.

After gently laying the boy down at his home, Hongwol scanned all the information about him and looked at his face once more.

'This is really... I want to steal him.'

And so, Leffrey woke up completely fine.

"What a strange ceiling."

It was something he had always wanted to say. Leffrey muttered as he looked at the studio apartment ceiling for the second time in his life.

'How did I get here yesterday?'

His memory was hazy. He clearly went to the convenience store to buy dinner, found the pink cat, Pinky, and then... fought with some guy in a suit, used up too much energy, and passed out.

Then after that... his memory went blank.

"Hmm..."

What happens to people who get captured while fighting a large guild? Typically, in movies, they are shown as being stuffed into a drum and thrown into the sea. In other words, they don't die peacefully.

'I’m getting goosebumps. Yesterday was really dangerous.'

Leffrey cursed his yesterday self. Why on earth did he suddenly pick a fight with those guys? His past self was never this kind of person. He was just an ordinary citizen, a coward.

To think he would do something so absurd just because he gained a little bit of power…

'I only went up against that guy in the suit because I thought he was a personal magical beast hunter. Besides, I was flustered because it was the first time I got and used an angelic ability.'

Leffrey made excuses for himself.

'It's good enough that I got home safely. Whatever large guild it is, it seems like a place that knows how to show mercy.'

In reality, it was more likely that they let him go because it was too much trouble to deal with him. Leffrey decided not to think too deeply about it. It wasn't a problem that had an answer anyway, no matter how much he thought about it. And there was a more serious problem he needed to worry about.

[Angelic Power Threshold Exceeded!]

[You can now use angelic power to increase your stats.]

This was the real problem he needed to worry about. Leffrey, who used all his power to save Pinky, gained a tremendous amount of Angelic Power as planned. Even more Angelic Power than when he gained Angelic Abilities.

And this was the result. Consuming all the Angelic Power that exceeded the threshold to raise one stat. It was an essential ability for Leffrey, who had stats that were no different from, or even worse than, an ordinary person.

'This ability is truly broken.'

Generally, to raise a single stat, one needed to go through bone-breaking effort or consume expensive elixirs. Even then, there was no guarantee that the stat would increase, and luck had to be on your side.

But with Angelic Power, just filling it up to the threshold would allow him to raise a stat for free. Of course, it was a pain in the ass to consume all the Angelic Power that exceeded the threshold, but it didn't change the fact that it was a broken ability.

'But what should I raise?'

Strength: 7

Agility: 5

Magic: 12

Esper Ability: 5

These were Leffrey's stats, excluding Angelic Power. Honestly, they were all so pathetic that Leffrey wanted to raise each of them by one.

But life was about choices. You couldn't always live the way you wanted.

'First of all, documentaries and books generally say... it's better to focus on raising stats you already show strength in.'

It was about choosing and strengthening your talent.

The stat where Leffrey currently showed strength was magic. It was the only stat that exceeded 10.

'But magic is a bit...'

Magic was literally the power needed to handle magic. And learning magic required a significant amount of money. Even decent magic books cost hundreds of millions of won, and finding a good teacher was similarly expensive.

Whether it was his past life or now, he was still poor. Leffrey shook his head.

'Let's skip magic. Then it's either strength or agility...'

Why did he skip over Esper without even considering it? This was due to the special nature of Esper. Esper was the stat that governed esper powers, and when this stat reached a certain level, the Awakener would gain a new esper power.

Therefore, right now, when he could only raise one stat with Angelic Power, investing this 1 stat point into Esper Ability was too stupid. It wouldn't make him any stronger and would just waste all his Angelic Power.

Leffrey thought for a moment. Then, with some hesitation, he fiddled with the status window.

[You have consumed all your angelic power to gain 1 strength!]

[Current strength: 8]

Leffrey's choice was strength. It was the most versatile of the four stats, and it also paired well with his divine power, 'Martial Arts of the Archangel who Tramples Dragons'.

He could feel himself getting a little stronger.

The boy clenched his fist.

"Am I really..."

A school's website was displayed on his smartphone. The name of the school was Central Superhuman Academy. It was the most famous superhuman academy in the world. Naturally, as with such an academy, the level of the entrance exam was beyond imagination.

Of course, if he went about it the usual way, there was no chance of Leffrey passing. He would have to utilize everything he had - the racial traits of an angel, Angelic Power, and even his memories of the future - to have a shot at passing.

And even then, it would be a slim chance.

But even with a slim chance, there was no other way. Leffrey wasn't aiming for the academy entrance exam just to defeat the demon king. He was also aiming for it to achieve the peaceful and nice life he couldn't enjoy in his previous life.

Right now, Leffrey was at the very bottom of society, with no money and no connections except for psychiatrists. If he missed this entrance exam, there was a high chance that there would be no next opportunity for him.

The only entrance exam Leffrey knew in detail was this year's exam.

"If I just graduate..."

But if he graduated from Central Superhuman Academy, he would be able to live a little more comfortably in this harsh society. Perhaps he could even enjoy luxuries like overseas travel and eat at restaurants that cost over 100,000 won per meal. (100.000 won is like 72 USD dollar)

'A successful life...'

Leffrey dreamed a sweet dream. A dream he had never dared to dream in his previous life.

'Success...'

Although it was something he wouldn't admit now... Leffrey in his past life admired heroes. So much so that he memorized knowledge about the Central Academy cadets who were potential heroes, the school structure that cradled these students, and even the entrance exam.

Late at night, Leffrey in his past life would browse through entertainment shows, documentaries, Saessak Wiki, and websites about the Central Academy, gathering information about them. He even collected merchandise of popular cadets, those who showed promise of becoming heroes. (Saessak Wiki. Basically a summarized wiki)

Anyway, in a documentary Leffrey watched with admiration in his past life, there was this piece of info.

'The Central Superhuman Academy, established with investments from 25 countries around the world, is famous for its extremely dangerous and difficult entrance exam.'

The video began by showing the panoramic view of the Central Superhuman Academy. A huge educational facility the size of a city located in the former DMZ area, with an impressive scale and an artificial World Tree at the center of the facility. (DMZ. Demilitarized Zone, one of the most heavily guarded borders in the world)

'No, to be precise, it's said that just applying is incredibly difficult.'

The Central Academy's application process was way over the top. First, to apply, one had to find the examiner hidden in each region, and then tell them the hidden password.

Naturally, neither was easy.

No, it was really difficult.

And the application period was only 3 days. Most candidates missed their chance without even being able to submit their application, let alone take the entrance exam.

However, Leffrey knew the examiner hiding in Seoul. This was because the documentary said this.

'As applications are discovered one by one, there's one that remains undiscovered until the very end. It's here in Seoul...'

A small barbecue restaurant located in a back alley. It was the kind of place that seemed like only regulars would go to, with no signboard. Leffrey knocked and entered the restaurant.

"Is anyone here?"

"We're not open right now."

It was a small restaurant. A man who appeared to be the owner was grilling meat and spoke gruffly without even looking at Leffrey. This was exactly as the documentary had described.

Leffrey took a deep breath and,

Said exactly what the documentary had informed him to say.

"I want a well-done meat."

"Hmm, already?"

The owner looked interested, raised an eyebrow, and muttered in disbelief without even looking at Leffrey.

"It hasn't even been a few hours since applications opened... you found me and even figured out the password? What kind of trickery did you use?"

"...A magician never reveals his secrets."

"That's true."

The owner grinned as though it was funny and took a large bite of meat. Leffrey swallowed his saliva and looked away.

"Then about the application..."

"Let's have one more test. Then I'll give it to you."

"...What?"

"Don't want to? Then get out."

This wasn't in the documentary. Nor was it in any other wiki or sites. Wasn’t it supposed to be that once you find the examiner and say the password correctly, then they give you the application?

"...I'll take the test."

But Leffrey had no other choice. Only this entrance exam was documented, and this is the only chance Leffrey had of succeeding

"Guess my race."

The owner was still not looking at Leffrey, enjoying his meat and soju. Seeing him wrapping his meat in lettuce was quite something.

'Guess his race?'

The owner looked like an ordinary middle-aged man. Not too handsome, not too ugly. He had a moderate belly fat and slight wrinkles were starting to form around his eyes.

He looked human no matter how you looked at him.

On the surface, that is.

"You have 10 seconds. Hurry up."

"Um... from what I can see, sir, you..."

But Leffrey knew the answer.

"You seem like an elf?"

This was because the documentary included an interview with Lusa, the Fallen Elf, who was the professor in charge of this exam and the examiner for Seoul.

After the last test, a random middle-aged man suddenly appeared and was being interviewed. Leffrey was a bit surprised that a man he had never seen in the documentary was being interviewed at such an important moment.

But what was even more surprising was the caption at the bottom that read 'Central Academy Martial Arts Professor Lusa Sherinan'.

'You might find the last test quite vicious. But you have to see through this much to be called a hero, wouldn't you?'

'But no one saw through it.'

The man shook his head a few times as if disappointed. Then his disguise dissolved, revealing a beautiful elf with short orange hair.

The elf said,

'...So that means there's none this time either.'

And so the interview ended.

Clang- The sound of a soju glass shattering.

The sound brought Leffrey back to reality. The owner, who had been ignoring him until now, was finally looking at him.

Naturally, Leffrey felt a bit uncomfortable.

"Cute... uh... no, that's not it."

The owner immediately shook his head. Then he took a deep breath and asked again,

"You... you... how did you figure out my race?"
