Chapter 207: 32 Acts Scholar_2

But he thought it over and realized that recommending a newcomer into the scholars’ circle wasn’t a big deal, and judging by Brand’s performance, it wouldn’t embarrass him.

Therefore, Turaman took a puff of smoke and suddenly pulled out a piece of parchment from the drawer, placed it on the book cover, and picked up his quill to write something on it. Then he folded the paper and put it into an envelope, dripped wax, and imprinted it with a seal.

He picked up the envelope, looked up, and asked, "I recommend you to go study with Sir Panoson for a while, you’ll understand how we operate. Although Sir Panoson is a rigid person, he is a very good teacher. What do you think?"

"Perfect." Brand replied. However, he thought this was just a normal procedure, could it be that all his efforts here were merely to save a few hundred Thor registration fees?

Certainly not.

He decided to push a bit further, so he stepped forward, pinched the envelope with his middle and index fingers, and said: "Lord Turaman, regarding that single word earlier. I must say I am researching an ancient language branch of the Cruz people, and I have a small discovery — some native people living in the Belta Plateau seem to still uphold primitive customs, and among them, the wizards possess some ancient words that have been passed down but maintain the most primitive aspect of the ancient Cruz dialect—"

Brand answered half-truthfully. The native inhabitants of the Belta Plateau were real, and a series of discoveries were indeed started from that desolate place, though the first Stone Tablet emerged elsewhere.

Honestly, the Stone Tablet had no practical use for Brand, so he didn’t want this world to prematurely enter a chaotic era.

Turaman’s eyes brightened slightly, the pipe in his mouth flickered intermittently.

"You are studying the ancient Cruz languages?" He looked at the young man suspiciously: "Go ahead, tell me more of your insights?"

"I suppose Lord Turaman has already noticed, ancient languages are imbued with magic. Hence the notion that words and language are the roots of all magic, but the epoch of Chaos marked a turning point. Since the Ancient Cruz people, the magical power of words has gradually declined..." Brand thought for a moment and pulled out a background detail from what he had read on forums. His foreknowledge of the era allowed him to be more informed about some core backgrounds.

Turaman nodded in agreement, showing a look of recognition.

"Cause and effect, should be related to the prolonged wars?" He responded.

"Prolonged wars, interesting," the old man turned back and took a ring from the drawer, placed it on the envelope, and answered: "You may browse Sir Panoson’s private collection first, if you have any new ideas, you can come back with this ring to find me—"

There was a glimpse of hope, Brand felt elated in his heart. He didn’t know if anyone had reached this step before, but undoubtedly every step thereafter would not be simple. Nevertheless, a good start brought him a sense of joy.

However, Turaman wasn’t completely convinced by him either. His method of stalling was indeed unique. Brand knew the old man would likely head to the Belta Plateau immediately, but whether he would find anything was uncertain.

Thinking this, he received the envelope and the ring. Instantly, a line of ghostly green text appeared on his retina—they seemed to float in his vision, forming a question:

Do you accept the occupation, sub-profession "Scholar"?

Brand, of course, chose to accept. Hence, a new section "Sub-profession" immediately appeared on his attribute panel, with scholar quietly lying in that section, experience was 0 level 0/6, and currently this occupation only had a line of small text below it "(History Knowledge level 1)".

In Amber Sword, sub-professions are supplementary to official professions. Unlike the main profession, sub-professions generally enhance a character from the side, hence they don’t offer powerful skills or attribute boosts, but they can grant characters some special abilities.

One could say, sub-professions are more akin to an identity, yet they can be leveled up.

For instance, scholars, whenever a character gains 5 levels or higher in a field of knowledge, they can unlock a corresponding "Familiar Profession". When they adopt this profession, the experience penalty doesn’t count towards the side profession limit, until they have three "Familiar Professions". Meanwhile, each level of scholar provides three times more skill experience than militia, which is why players in the game call it "a must-have side profession".

Silver Castle Scholars are even stronger, with four familiar professions and considering alchemy as their main profession. This means it combines scholar sub-profession with alchemist sub-profession.

Naturally, the experience penalty is shared between sub-professions, but it doesn’t affect the main profession.

Upon adopting the profession, Brand immediately invested 220 points of experience to elevate the scholar to level 6, gaining 250 skill experience. Scholar sub-profession’s experience and skill experience ratio are as high as 1 to 1.1 in the first 6 levels, which is the highest among all professions. However, a downside of sub-professions is that the occupation level cannot exceed the skill level by more than 5 levels.

Brand needed nobles or heraldry knowledge instead of history knowledge, so after leveling the scholar to level 6, he had to hold off for now.

After completing his own tasks, it felt like he had momentarily spaced out. He raised his head and asked: "Lord Turaman, I have a friend, you saw her. She is looking for her aunt, but they have lost touch. We are searching for her. Have you seen Romantic’s aunt?"

Turaman tapped his pipe on the table, adjusted his glasses, and replied: "Young man, I just know her aunt. We haven’t seen each other for about ten years. When I met that lass, she was about the same age as this little girl. In fact, I didn’t know she lived around here—"

Seeing Brand about to speak, he quickly waved his hand: "There’s no need to ask anything extra, every wizard has their secrets. Since she hasn’t told you, I won’t say anything unnecessary."

The old man exhaled smoke from his nose: "Alright, our conversation is almost over. Young man, your purpose has been achieved. When you think you have some understanding of the current path you are on, come find me again."

Brand was startled, turned to look at Romantic.

Miss Merchant smiled sweetly at him: "It’s alright, Brand, my aunt is amazing."

You little rascal. Brand glared at her but felt a softness in his heart.
