Chapter 139: 4 Acts of Chaos_2
Ben nodded. The methods by which the Highland Wizards of Karasu studied were both similar to and different from those of Bujia’s Wizards. The High-level Wizards of Bujia, who wore off-white robes and walked on the snowy white marble floors, resembled academicians, nobles, or rulers among Wizards more than the mysterious witchcraft traditions of other regions.
"What do they want to do?" Miss Merchant asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"Plunder, rob, obtain everything they could never dare to dream of typically through violent means—like a beautiful lady such as yourself."
"N-no, don’t say that, I won’t thank you for it." Miss Merchant’s face turned red with the compliment, her small eyebrows stood up.
In the hustle and bustle, the riot finally broke out.
Nobody knew who made the first move, but all of a sudden many people started attacking others. More people took the opportunity to push forward, many families were scattered in the crowd, and those who were knocked to the ground hardly had any chance to get up again.
Cries, screams, and shouts filled the air.
Ben stood silently on the side watching this scene, unable to stop it, he could only instruct the coachman to move the carriage to the side. However, this action attracted attention; some of the rioters noticed them, and when they saw Romantically on the carriage, their eyes lit up with greed.
Most of these were usually the idle loafers, young punks, or disgraced mercenaries, unlawful adventurers of the streets. They had a mutual understanding and easily coordinated, pushing away anyone in their path, unwittingly moving closer to Ben’s carriage.
Ben frowned and instinctively switched his sword to the other hand, while Romantically and Char beside him grew tense.
"Young man, it’s not right for you to occupy a carriage all by yourself, especially at this time. Let me hitch a ride." A mercenary clad in dirty leather armor grabbed the carriage’s lantern rail, attempting to climb up without waiting for an answer.
"Get down." Ben moved the sword to rest on his neck.
"I just want a ride, boy, you wouldn’t want to kill someone, would you?" The mercenary didn’t expect Ben to be so firm, he froze in surprise. Standing there with one foot on the carriage step, he looked at Ben with malicious eyes and shouted, "You nobles always run away at the critical moment, and now you won’t even let us hitch a ride. You selfish bastard. If you have the guts, kill me—"
Many people gathered around the mercenary, looking at Ben with provocative eyes. However, they were more focused on Romantically, looking at her with ravenous expressions.
"Ben..." Miss Merchant was finally a bit scared, she couldn’t help but grab Ben’s arm with her slender hand.
Ben turned back to pat her hand, then turned back to the mercenary with a disgusted attitude, "See that? There is a lady in the carriage. She doesn’t welcome you, you can leave now."
Ben’s tough attitude obviously angered the other side, the mercenary cursed and tried to force his way up. The onlookers behind also tried to rush up; they seemed convinced that Ben, just a noble youth, wouldn’t dare do anything in this charged atmosphere.
"Lord, don’t—" Char didn’t finish his sentence before he was stunned to see Ben coldly withdraw the sword and then thrust it into the mercenary’s chest, kicking him off with one swift motion.
The mercenary seemed unbelieving even in death, unable to comprehend that Ben dared to act. But Ben showed by his actions—don’t mess with me, I am not someone who is easy to deal with. Though he usually appeared as an ordinary person, kind-hearted, unable to stand others’ miseries, when it came to his bottom line, Ben was decisive and ruthless without a trace of mercy.
Just as when he killed for the first time in Yusong Castle, he felt sick afterward, but during the act, he didn’t hesitate for a second.
The mercenary’s body fell heavily to the ground, causing the bystanders to step back instinctively in shock at Ben’s coldness towards human life, although they quickly realized—they were the side with the greater numbers.
"Damn nobles, killing someone in the street!" someone immediately shouted.
"Yeah, we just wanted to hitch a ride."
"These heartless bastards!"
"They never see us common folks as people, we are nothing to them." The crowd began to close in, angrily stirring up those around them with shouts, blurring the lines of right and wrong.
"Teach him a lesson!"
"Drag him off the carriage..."
"Beat him to death!" Most of the time, the majority didn’t know the truth, they just believed what they heard and saw. Soon a large crowd gathered beside the carriage.
Char and Romantically were both worried, realizing the situation was getting more dangerous.
Ben pressed his sword, sitting silently at the side of the carriage, coldly watching these people. Soon someone else dared to rush up, thinking that in full view, this ’noble youth’ would at least restrain himself a bit.
But he was wrong.
Ben said nothing, he simply thrust his sword directly into the man’s throat, letting him fall while clutching his throat in shock. Ben’s strike not only stunned the rascals but caused an uproar among the crowd.
Ben quickly stood up, jumped down from the carriage. Everyone automatically stepped back in shock, he stood in the center coldly staring them down, with one hand on the sword, he suddenly slashed over their heads—
The sword wind lightly brushed over their heads, giving a cool sensation, then a crack about ten feet long split open on a nearby building’s roof with a loud ’crash’.
Everyone turned their heads in shock, staring at the crack.
"Behave yourselves."
Ben finally spoke coldly, sheathed his sword then climbed back to the carriage. Instead of wasting time on these people, he was more concerned about why Frey hadn’t appeared yet.
Romantically looked at him with stars in her eyes.
"You’re amazing, Ben." Miss Merchant praised.
"Killing is no skill, especially when these people are just commoners." Ben shook his head.
"But only you protect me."
Ben was stunned, then smiled slightly.
