Chapter 808: Landing
Chapter 808: Landing
Yarin's POV:
When Mom asked me if I wanted to go to Jasper, I was a bit confused.
Why would I go there?
But then, she continued, "The Lily of the Valley is about to fall, and the fact that Azazel is dying can no longer be hidden within a certain scope. But Linda won't give in so easily, and she still has a trump card we can't control - your connection to Azazel hasn't been completely severed. Although there's the seal of the goddess, it's long been proven that this seal isn't forever secure."
"What if Azazel doesn't die tomorrow but continues to hold on for three, five, or even more years? Even in slumber, he'll still pose a threat to you. You can't live forever in his shadow, so we need to take the initiative and send him on his way."
How do you kill a god? It seemed there was no way except to wait for his natural demise.
But I still chose to go. This was a bond I had to sever with Azazel, as Mom had said. I had no capital to continue facing off with Azazel, and besides, the goddess had also mentioned that Azazel was just lacking a vessel to perpetuate his existence. When the old existence faced its end, time would offer him a chance for rebirth - take over my body, and he could continue to exist.
"In the border city, Lily found the former the Lily of the Valley officer 'Cigarette Butt' Marty, who had defected. He has a lot of information and is currently willing to cooperate cautiously. Eve is also there, and in addition, I will send more trusted individuals to assist you," Mom said. "Success or failure hinges on this, it's very dangerous, but this time, I know I can't stop you with any excuses. This is something you must do on your own."
I hugged her and also hugged Dad, saying, "Please don't worry; I promise I'll come back safely, and by then, Azazel will surely be dead."
Dad lightly kissed my forehead and offered his blessing, "Stay safe, son."
Regarding my impending journey to Jasper, Heller and Cynthia both showed varying degrees of enthusiasm.
"You must take me with you," Heller said. "You can't just charge in head-on, right? My sparrow friends have many relatives in Jasper; they would be the best allies."
Cynthia added, "Beware of those insidious dark forces; you've been infected by them before. You know who can help you."
I understood they were expressing their concern for me, which touched me deeply. But I couldn't let them face those dangers as well; it was something I had to bear, not them.
But they countered, "Did Azazel only harm you and not the werewolf pack? Aren't we members of the werewolf pack? Do you have the sole responsibility to protect your people, and we have none?"
Their questions left me speechless, stumbling to respond, "But it's different..."
"What's different? Yarin, you're always overly protective. That makes you forget that those you're protecting also have power. You can't always face everything alone. Strength in unity, understand?"
In any case, they were determined to come with me, and what surprised me even more was that both Mom and Dad agreed!
If something went wrong with this, the entire royal lineage would be wiped out. Did they want to abdicate the throne to me?
Later, Mom and Dad told me privately that because of what happened four years ago, Heller and Cynthia actually felt quite guilty. They always felt that they shouldn't have let me face the fugitive alone, even if one more person stayed to help me, perhaps I wouldn't have fallen into a rampage due to the influence of dark forces.
"They have to face their past guilt; maybe this is their last chance. Otherwise, it's hard for them to move on when there's still so much weighing on them," Mom said. "Actually, there's so much pressing on them in their current positions, isn't there?"
"Kara, the civilians who died in the explosion, the warriors who were innocently harmed... Whether you want to or not, the souls of the deceased weigh heavily on your heart, just like stones. In the end, whether it was their responsibility or not doesn't matter anymore. When they're in their current positions, they can't escape the guilt of self-blame. Let them go together with you, for the sake of the souls who have passed, and for their own sake."
I could only agree.
When I stepped onto Jasper's soil, I felt a breeze unlike anything I had ever experienced, contrasting greatly with the atmosphere of the werewolf pack. A different race, a different country; everything made me feel slightly improper.
I had arrived incognito; to avoid raising any suspicions, Mom hadn't officially announced my trip. So, there were no grand parades to welcome me. Instead, Lily was there with Aunt Eve and other royal subordinates who were hiding within the fashion company to pick me up.
Lily had on oversized sunglasses, looking stylish and competent. Upon seeing the three of us siblings, she took off her sunglasses and greeted us warmly, "Good afternoon. Was the flight smooth?"
Looking into her bright eyes, still as beautiful as ever, my fluttering heart suddenly calmed down, finally feeling grounded.
With just one glance, I understood that Lily had been through a lot over these years, but she had never changed her heart.
