Alpha's Rejected Mate Returns as Queen -
Chapter 804: New Officer
Chapter 804: New Officer
Lily's POV:
I immediately responded, "I am honored to be friends with the Prince. Your Majesty, please rest assured. I'm doing well. If any difficulties need to be solved, I won't hesitate to help."
I knew that the Queen reaching out to me was about more than just inquiring about my life. As expected, after a few pleasantries, she said, "I heard from Yarin that you're currently working in the fashion industry. I plan to open a subsidiary in Jasper specifically for the clothing business. We need a trustworthy individual with experience in dealing with humans. Are you interested?"
I had guessed that the Queen needed me to do something, but I didn't expect her to offer me a position to manage a royal business immediately. It was indeed a great honor, but I was aware of my youth, and I had no idea how to run a business.
So, I politely declined. However, the Queen said, "You won't be responsible for running the business. You'll handle communications with material suppliers, clients, and the like. After all, you've been in this industry for several years, which is more than a newcomer who knows next to nothing. Additionally, you're a clever girl, and I'm sure you've already guessed my other intentions."
Yes, I understood that this was more than just a simple job. With this new identity, I would naturally be able to travel all over Jasper under the guise of purchasing materials, contacting clients, or recruiting designers, all while secretly gathering intelligence on Lily of the Valley. Compared to newcomers, my years of experience working in Jasper's fashion industry made it less suspicious for me to continue this line of work. Therefore, should I accept?
At this moment, I couldn't pretend to be hesitant. On one hand, there were ambitious aspirations to fulfill my life's ideals, and on the other hand, a deep distrust of my abilities. This wasn't as simple as eavesdropping on a few idle conversations. Once exposed, the relationship between Jasper and the werewolf pack would immediately become tense, and I would not escape blame.
Sensing my hesitation, the Queen said, "Don't worry about your identity, dear. I will grant you the title of Lady. With it, you'll be considered a notable figure among the werewolves in Jasper.
"This will significantly reduce your suspicions because people tend to assume that spies need to conceal themselves with inconspicuous identities rather than parade around the streets with noble titles, openly probing for information."
"Me? A lady?"
I hadn't expected the Queen to trust me to this extent.
The title of Lady was the lowest rank in the nobility hierarchy, and many old-line nobles didn't even consider Knights or Ladies as 'true nobility'. However, even in this age of 'noble downsizing', when everyone assumed nobility was becoming less significant, such titles were rarely granted.
I was just an unremarkable person. There was no reason for me to receive this title. Therefore, I understood even more that this represented the Queen's absolute trust in me. She believed I wouldn't tarnish that trust and would surely bring about achievements worthy of this title.
In that case, I thought I had no reason to refuse.
"I accept, Your Majesty," I said with relief. "If I can do something for the werewolf pack, it would be my greatest honor."
I knew I had been waiting for this day for a long time. I didn't like a life of mediocrity, and I didn't believe I was as worthless as my father and mother thought, except for marrying and producing offspring.
I had my ideas, and I knew what my aspirations were. So, when the opportunity presented itself, I didn't need to avoid it. The only thing to do was seize and use it without regret.
My life truly began at twenty.
The Queen acted swiftly. A contract arrived at my doorstep one day after she called me, appointing me as the 'Executive Director'.
Huh?
I thought it would be a position like manager or supervisor. How did I end up as CEO right away?
I didn't know how to manage a company. I really didn't!
But the arrow was already on the bowstring and had to be fired. At this point, I also believed that the Queen wouldn't actually have me manage a company. Gathering intelligence was just a side task; this was a genuine fashion business. Perhaps, as the Queen had said, the more crowns I had on my head, the less suspicion I would attract.
Becoming the CEO's first task wasn't to gather intelligence but to manage my public image. I had to attend various press conferences, cocktail parties, and banquets to build relationships and solidify my identity according to outsiders.
These past few days, I'd had my fill of flattery, like being called 'young and promising'. However, I'd also realized that not all this flattery was directed solely at me. It was because of my connection to the werewolf pack; there were enormous business opportunities within the werewolf pack. Businesspeople who were quick to seize opportunities are willing to court my favor.
I hadn't missed the disdain in some people's eyes because of my youth or being a woman. Some genuinely want to discuss business, while others see me as an easy mark to exploit for their gain. I didn't mind; I took it all in stride. It was a way of fishing, after all.
Sure enough, the fish I wanted to hook took the bait.
I silently sigh as I look at the fabric merchant in front of me, who was trying to get on my good side with a raised wine glass. What kind of magic did Azazel have that captivated people so completely? He carried the Lily of the Valley's emblem wherever he went, making himself a
prime target.
