Chapter 760: The Growth Period

Yarin's POV:

Heller didn't blame him; though he found it a bit excessive for Sisley to leave without a word,

he said, "Those days are behind us now, merely temporary physiological conditions. My eyes are completely fine now."

Then he asked, "Speaking of which, have you experienced these symptoms as well?"

Sisley nodded. "Yes, I believe these are side effects of the power we possess. When the physical body can no longer accommodate spiritual development, the spirit will, in turn, modify our bodies. Have you noticed that since the brief blindness, your eyes have actually improved? You can see farther, more clearly, and with reduced fatigue. Your tolerance for wind and light has also increased."

Heller nodded. He used to be slightly nearsighted, but after his last eye examination, he discovered that his vision had completely returned to normal and even exceeded normal levels.

But then Sisley's words took a worrying turn. "From my experience, I can tell you this isn't a one-time occurrence. When I first experienced these symptoms at the age of eleven, the family institute... the former research institute was studying the causes and patterns of this phenomenon.

"The institute has fallen now, and the data is likely lost. But it's okay; they hadn't made much progress back then. I can only share my experiences with you.

"Since the age of eleven, I've experienced temporary blindness once a year, lasting from a week to a month, with the longest duration not exceeding a month. This persisted until I reached adulthood at eighteen, and my eyes stopped developing as well.

"I think it's similar to how children grow taller. Once you realize your height is no longer increasing, it signifies that the physical limit has been set. Therefore, after experiencing the blindness of adolescence, our powers truly stabilize."

This meant that if Sisley's experiences were universal, Heller would also have to endure periodic blindness in the years leading up to adulthood. While it was a necessary part of his power growth, it didn't mean the pain could be ignored.

Heller asked, "I have another question. My blindness isn't complete; instead, I can see the manifestation of people's spirits. Was it the same for you back then?"

Sisley nodded. "Yes, those faint blue clusters represent the spirits condensed within each individual. As you grow older, you'll find that the clusters you see during blindness become brighter and more vibrant. This indicates that your control over spiritual power is strengthening, and your perception of others' spirits becomes more acute.

"The institute believed that if this process continued to deepen, you might eventually be able to see the manifestation of others' spirits without entering a state of blindness. However, unfortunately, even after my growth period ended, I never broke through that limitation to reach the level described in the theory. I can no longer see people's spirits with my naked eyes unless I consciously control the person and succeed."

Hearing this, I suddenly remembered that Heller had been practicing controlling sparrows, so I asked him, "When you control sparrows, can you see their spiritual manifestations?" "Somewhat," Heller replied. "It's not the faint blue color; it's different from werewolves too. It emits a soft, tender green halo, just like... it feels like something natural."

Sisley clarified, "From my experience, werewolves are blue, humans are silver, and most animals are green, including elves, though their shade is a deeper, lake-like green. Fallen cultists appear gray, tinted occasionally with hints of other colors. That allows me to deduce their original race."

Suddenly, Cynthia raised her hand, saying, "Then what about me? What color do you see when you look at me?"

Sisley paused, then quickly grasped her meaning.

Since Sisley was present when Azazel invaded and saw Cynthia fighting against the

malevolent creature, he knew her true situation.

"Unless I control you, I can't see your color, Your Highness," he said. "But your situation is special. I don't know what consequences might arise from attempting it hastily, so it's probably better if we don't."

Cynthia nodded and didn't press further.

Sisley turned to Heller again, "In any case, as you grow bit by bit, you'll learn more about the details related to your powers. Some details might even be unknown to me.

"It wasn't until I was fourteen that I could catch a glimpse of what a person's spirit looked like. And you, my brother, you saw everything on your first try. You possess great talent, perhaps even more than I do. It's possible that you could indeed view people's souls with your naked eyes, just like in the theory."

But whether this talent was a blessing or a curse for Heller remained unclear. Just like Aunt Dorothy, who could glimpse the destinies of people's lives, it was an immensely powerful ability. However, when this power brought endless misfortune to the wielder, could it still be considered anything other than a painful curse?
