Chapter 738: Failure To Establish A Friendship
Chapter 738: Failure To Establish A Friendship
Yarin's POV:
We were arranged to stay in the 'rear house', the mansion situated further inside the two. There were not many occupants in the rear house, besides the three of us, there were only Lady Charlies and her nephew, Eden. Lady Charlies and Eden lived on the second floor, while the third floor was occupied by just the three of us.
In the evening, the three of us slept together.
Cynthia seemed interested in the boy named Eden and asked us, "Don't you think he looks somewhat familiar?"
"Familiar? Have you seen him before?" I didn't remember anyone like him in my memories.
"No, of course not. It's just that he reminds me of someone else."
"Who?"
"Heller! His silence in front of strangers is almost identical!"
"Hey! I can hear you!" Heller protested discontentedly, snatching the blanket away. "Does he really look that much like me? Well, I guess I see a bit of it too. But honestly, I'm usually quite good with social etiquette when dealing with outsiders..."
Cynthia snatched the blanket back, saying, "It's not that bad. Most strangers we encounter are even more nervous than us, right? The status gap is enough to compensate for any lack of manners on our part."
"I think Eden's nervousness partly stems from his introverted nature and partly because he might be afraid of us-afraid of our status and position, which makes him feel at a loss," I added. "Also, Lady Charlies never mentioned having another nephew; we've never seen him. I guess Eden probably grew up with the main family and recently came to the Lycan Pack. Suddenly arriving in a strange place, unfamiliar with anything, would naturally make him close himself off."
Heller and Cynthia continued chatting while fighting over the blanket, and I endured for a while but couldn't take it anymore. I grabbed all the blankets and angrily roared, "Didn't you both bring your own blankets? Why do you have to take mine?!"
They finally chuckled and retrieved the blankets from under the bed.
Compared to the opulent mansions with mountains of overlapping layers in the bustling city center, the Charlies Residence wasn't particularly luxurious among the aristocracy. I believe this was due to the Charlies Family's cautious nature. They understood the dangers of drawing too much attention, unlike those old noble families that had accumulated wealth for generations. One such family named Evaria, whose previous residence was even more luxurious than the palace, had already become history.
Early in the morning, we woke up to the gentle calls of the servants. They were used to us three sleeping together and tidying up the disheveled bedding without making a fuss. They took Heller and Cynthia's pillows and blankets to their own rooms.
"It's only six-thirty now..." Heller grumbled, unwilling to get up, occupying the entire bed after Cynthia and I got off.
"The breakfast time at the Charlies Residence is seven o'clock, Your Highness," one of the servants said sternly. "Although the kitchen always has food ready, being late for breakfast on the first day in someone else's home isn't proper etiquette."
The breakfast at the Charlies' was taken separately by the 'front house' and the 'rear house', so only Lady Charlies and Eden were at the table.
"Good morning, children. How was your sleep last night?" Lady Charlies greeted us warmly as we took seats. "I hope you had a good dream on your first night at the Charlies Residence."
"Of course, we slept very well." We approached her to bow in courtesy. Initially, Heller was a bit nervous, but he quickly got used to Lady Charlies's smiling presence.
After we sat down, Eden greeted us quietly. Lady Charlies felt somewhat helpless with her nephew's reserved personality, but she could do nothing.
After breakfast, Lady Charlies asked Eden to take us for a walk in the garden. So, he stood up silently and escorted us around as if scaring away the birds.
The fountain was not working in winter, and some dried leaves and snow were inside.
We sat on the edge of the fountain to rest. I tentatively spoke, "So, you're Lady Charlies's nephew. Are you currently attending school in the Lycan Pack?"
"Yes, Your Highness. I'm in the first year at Sivir Academy, and I'll start the second year when school starts," he replied in a low voice. His hoarse voice carried a tense feeling, like stiff muscles.
"That's great. When school starts in February, Heller and I will also attend Sivir Academy. Then we'll be schoolmates! You're actually one year ahead of us, so you can be our senior, right?"
I intended to get closer and make friends, but my words had the opposite effect. Eden felt uneasy because of what I said and shook his head repeatedly, struggling to articulate a sentence.
"He's just joking, dear. He doesn't mean anything else," Cynthia stepped in to mediate. "Want to go back inside, gentlemen? I'm feeling a bit cold, maybe we can wrap ourselves in blankets and chat by the fireplace. It looks gloomy, and it might snow soon."
Eden stood up in silence and led us back inside. I was thinking about how to make amends for my rudeness, but he promptly bid farewell after entering the living room.
