Chapter 718: Wishing For A Next Life
Yarin's POV:
"Because I thought you might consider the outside world unsafe like the walls have ears or something, that's why you don't want to say anything," I scratched my head and shared my guess.
"Of course, that's just my speculation. Maybe you simply didn't feel the need to speak. Since I placed the Moon Palace courtyard in my spiritual world using the divinity left by the goddess, you haven't seen it yet, have you? It would be nice to take a look."
The giant wolf stood up, and the grass rustled under his feet. A few butterflies were startled by his movement and fluttered around him in a panic before disappearing into the flower bushes.
Birds had already set their sights on this excellent piece of home-furnishing material, diving from the branches and landing on the giant wolf, bouncing around on him as if nothing had happened. Then, swiftly, they plucked a tuft of fur from its back and hurried away.
"I didn't know what the Moon Palace courtyard looked like before," I said as an owl landed on my head. "I haven't disturbed life in the courtyard. Now it seems quite warm and harmonious, isn't it? You're a bit heavy, and my neck is screaming in protest."
I gently took the owl down, and it struggled uncomfortably before flying away.
"... It's nice here," Spil said in a low voice. "Everything is beautiful and harmonious, just like..."
He didn't finish his sentence, and I picked up where he left off, "Just like everything is still the same as before."
Spil transformed into his human form and sat down on the grass, gazing into the distant, hazy horizon in a daze.
"I have lived in the forest since birth, and nature feels as familiar to me as a mother. My beloved understands this is my nature, so she never demanded that I live with her. She stayed by the goddess's side, and I stayed in the forest. Our hearts have never had even the slightest crack despite the distance.
"But I am the goddess's weapon, unable to stay away from my master for too long. So I took the initiative to come to the Moon Palace courtyard, guarding the goddess and longing for my beloved.
"We lived like this for many years, and looking back, our lives were full of grand events. Many historical moments captured us; we truly were an immortal couple at that time. This life made me realize I never lost my freedom, even after leaving the forest. Love is never a shackle; the confidence and motivation drive me to run around this not-so-peaceful world."
I silently sat next to him, not interrupting his murmurings.
"I once thought this life would continue forever, always happy, always together, always basking in the goddess's radiance.
"But that moment came suddenly. The goddess summoned all of us and said she had foreseen her departure. She could no longer accompany us, protect us forever. Before she left, she wanted to bless everyone who stayed in the Moon Palace courtyard, sending them to the mortal world to enjoy wealth and happiness.
"She assured us that even if she eventually left, she would protect our peace and happiness forever. As long as the moon exists, the promise will never be broken.
"Of course, we were shocked, sad, and unable to accept it. But the Goddess never lied to us, so in the end, we had to accept this fact and knew that the outcome could not be changed. Before the Moon Palace courtyard collapsed, we had to leave.
"So the Goddess blessed every former companion, personally seeing them off until, in the end, only my beloved and I were left. At the moment of parting, neither of us wanted to leave. We preferred to stand with the Moon Goddess's courtyard.
"But I only wanted to die myself, unwilling to give up her chance of living. So I lied to her, saying, 'You go first. The Goddess told me she could preserve this place, like putting my soul into her spear. Then, I will become the last and only guardian of the Moon Palace courtyard, and we can fulfill our wishes together.'
"At my plea, the goddess kept this lie for me. My beloved believed it and left. Before she departed, she told me we would meet again in the next life. At that time, she might not recognize me anymore, so she asked me not to forget her and must come to find her.
"Until the end, she didn't realize that the promise made for the next life was just an unfulfillable lie."
I listened silently and, in the end, patted his shoulder and said, "I'm sorry, my friend. Your love story is truly touching.
"But now you are alive and can fulfill your promise to find her, right?" I reassured him. "Rest assured, we won't stop you; you can do whatever you want."
Spil smiled and said, "Yes, I should go find her..."
"That's right, you should. When are you leaving? I can help you prepare your luggage, and if you encounter any difficulties on the way, just let me know. We're buddies, so don't hesitate..."
As I was speaking, Spil interrupted me, smiling wryly, "No need. I don't have to find her anymore. Perhaps in some mysterious way, the moon is still watching over us. My beloved, she has already come to my side."
