Chapter 708: The Lock
Chapter 708: The Lock
Yarin's POV:
"Because of the faith of the werewolf pack, I can continue to exist, and I am already grateful to have my life extended until today."
"Please don't say that! It's something we should do for you," I immediately retorted. "If it weren't for your initial shelter, the werewolf pack might no longer exist. But now we can't do anything for you..."
"Don't be discouraged, child. As I mentioned earlier, you've already done your best for me. However, nothing can avoid the end of life, and the so-called eternal life is just a beautiful vision that cannot exist."
At this point, she chuckled softly.
"Since you came to see me today for Azazel, then think about him, my child. I am reaching the end, so can demons truly achieve immortality?"
The goddess's words left me stunned.
... Azazel? Immortality?
Yes, if even the goddess's life has an end, then surely even demons cannot escape the day of their own demise, right?
"Since ancient times, Azazel has always enjoyed toying with humanity for his despicable amusement," the goddess said. "But I have never seen him so desperate and reckless. If he wants a vessel to walk among humans, how difficult would it be to achieve it discreetly? It would just take a bit more time, and time shouldn't be an issue for him. But now, he seems eager to get you, which is unlike his usual style of manipulating from behind the scenes like a puppeteer.
"The only reason I can think of is that he's in a hurry because he also sees his own approaching end, and that moment is not far away."
I recalled Azazel's unusual 'gentle' attitude toward me, his hurried changes to me, and the mark he left on my soul. Combined with the goddess's words, it suddenly became clear to me.
All of Azazel's abnormal behavior had an explanation. Knowing that he indeed had hidden motives actually made me feel relieved.
"So, Azazel is actually using me as his elixir of immortality?"
"Yes, because your connection with him is similar to your connection with me, like a 'bloodline' link within your souls. This makes you special and capable of becoming a cornerstone for his rebirth."
"Rebirth?"
"Yes, just as your mother once assimilated a part of Azazel's divinity, he can transfer his divinity to you and elevate you to become a 'god.' But, of course, it won't be complete. Once you become his kind, he can erode your existence and steal the long lifespan that should have belonged to you, thus prolonging his life.
"All of this is based on the fact that you must become powerful enough to withstand the cost of becoming a god. Unlike your mother, who was transformed through Azazel's soul fragments, Azazel's current situation doesn't allow him to separate his soul fragments. So, he must personally alter you. This is good news for you because it means you have enough time to prepare.
"But I can't directly erase all the preparations Azazel has made on you, as he has connected his soul to everything about you. I am no longer powerful enough to sever a demon's soul. Azazel might follow your connection and invade this place if he detects any interference.
"Just as the demon's fragments could transform your mother, my approaching death can also transform you. When that happens, Azazel won't spare any effort to achieve his purpose ahead of time."
The goddess spoke of her impending death without emotions, but it caused a great commotion in my heart.
"Then maybe I shouldn't have come here," I said dejectedly, "If I didn't come, Azazel wouldn't be able to threaten you."
"But think from another perspective, if you didn't come, you would never know Azazel's intentions," the goddess said with a light laugh. "Don't be so pessimistic. Although I can't permanently solve the problem, I can at least provide you with a weapon to fight against him."
"A weapon?"
"Yes, since Azazel marked an anchor and created a channel in your soul, we can at least put a locked door on that channel."
Saying this, the goddess produced a cluster of soft-haloed light in her hand at some point. She raised her hand, and the light cluster slowly flew into my chest. I felt like a cool evening breeze passed through my heart, dispelling the anxiety and heat lingering on my soul.
When I looked up, the goddess had disappeared without a trace, and a gentle breeze stirred around me. Lotuses rustled in the wind. Behind me, a giant black wolf had silently appeared. The ethereal voice of the goddess came from mid-air, "This is my divinity, my child. It will help you resist evil and become a seal that guards against demons. With it, you will have the upper hand, and the demon won't be able to come and go freely within your body."
I urgently shouted, "You gave me your divinity, what about you?"
But only a soft laugh echoed in the wind.
The wind subsided, and a sense of emptiness spread through my heart, as if someone had carved a piece out of it, and I felt that the missing part would never return.
