Chapter 537: The Statue’s Texture
By lunchtime, Lucia sat on the long dining table alone. There was already food prepared by the servants she hadn’t seen before.
"Lady Lucia, Master Daniel might not be able to come to lunch since he was still in the meeting," Base, the butler, informed. He lowered his head before settling behind Lucia’s chair.
"Oh, okay. It’s fine," Lucia replied awkwardly. She grabbed her utensils and started cutting the steak, but she could feel the vomit going up from her stomach.
The images of dismembered bodies kept hunting Lucia since the memory was re-freshened. She pushed the steak away and focused her attention on the vegetables nearby.
"Is the steak not to your liking?" Base asked upon noticing Lucia’s actions.
Lucia shook her head. "I prefer to eat vegetables for now," she replied softly, taking a bite of a carrot.
"I see," Base nodded in understanding. He motioned toward the servants to remove the steak from Lucia’s table.
Lucia smiled at the servant, but she was ignored, which made her feel embarrassed.
However, Lucia shrugged it off and tried to eat in peace. At the dining area, the only sound was the clicking of her utensils against the ceramic plate.
When Lucia finished her meal, the silence weighed heavier than she expected. She put her utensils down and dabbed her lips with a napkin, feeling relieved and stifled in the grand yet isolating dining hall.
"Lady Lucia," Base said, his tone steady as always. "If you require anything else, please don’t hesitate to ask."
Lucia glanced at him, her lips curling into a polite smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. "Thank you, Base. I’ll just head to the garden for some fresh air."
Base inclined his head. "I’ll have someone escort you."
"That won’t be necessary," Lucia interjected quickly, standing from her seat. "I’d prefer to go alone."
Base hesitated for a moment but ultimately relented. "As you wish, my lady. The garden is just beyond the west wing. If you need anything, simply call for me."
Lucia nodded and made her way out of the dining hall, her footsteps echoing faintly in the vast corridors.
The estate was far more significant than Lucia anticipated, with high ceilings and ornate decor that seemed to loom over her. She followed the faint scent of flowers, eventually stepping out into a sprawling garden bathed in soft sunlight.
"This place is beautiful," Lucia muttered as she wandered, her fingers brushing against the petals of roses and lilacs.
The vibrant colors of the blooms and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze.
Lucia closed her eyes and enjoyed the fresh air, which helped her relax a little. "This is good," she murmured.
However, that didn’t last.
Lucia was interrupted by a cough from behind. She looked back and saw Base standing neatly.
"Oh, is there something wrong?" Lucia asked. She could feel the creeps that Base was there, but she didn’t feel his presence.
"I apologize for interrupting you, but I forgot to tell you that we have a scheduled meeting with a coordinator and organizer for the wedding," Base informed; he talked slowly to ensure Lucia would understand every word he said.
"What?" Lucia’s eyes widened. She was surprised there was already a wedding preparation when she was only engaged yesterday.
"The Master wants the wedding to be done soon. However, he wanted you to prepare the designs you wanted," Base replied, explaining what Daniel had told him.
"Where’s Daniel?" Lucia asked. She wanted to talk to him about the preparation, as she expected the engagement to last months before the actual wedding.
"He won’t go home for a while," Base replied.
"Then, I would like to go home. The preparation can be done anytime soon," Lucia stated, forcing a smile.
However, Base shook his head. "Lady, the Master wants you to stay here until he arrives."
"And how long will that be?" Lucia crossed her arms. She could feel that Base wouldn’t easily budge from his principles.
"I don’t know, Lady Lucia, but I assure you. It will be smoother if you’re here," Base insisted, leaving no space for Lucia to disagree.
Lucia was silent for a few minutes as she decided what to do. ’Staying here in the mansion for a few days is an excellent opportunity for me to explore the place without Daniel. But why do I feel Base is observing me,’ she thought deeply.
"What’s your final decision, Lady Lucia?" Base asked. His brow furrowed as he waited for an answer.
Lucia cleared her throat and showed an innocent smile. "I’ll stay for now, but as for the preparations, I can do them next week. There’s no need to rush, and besides, I want to enjoy the engagement days."
Base raised a brow, amused by Lucia’s decision. "Then, I shall convey your words. Have a good day," he said slightly, bowing and going inside the mansion to do his job.
Lucia let out a deep breath. "That man is not normal," she whispered, indicating Base’s presence. She went to the nearby bench and sat. Her eyes looked around the area and saw a few statues.
"I don’t know why they liked to put statues around the place. It’s nice to look at... but," Lucia paused as she admired the statues.
An urge pushed Lucia to walk to a nearby statue, which was a woman with a hand raised as if she was shielding herself.
As Lucia approached, she focused on the statue’s expression. "She looks afraid," she muttered, staring intently.
Lucia’s eyes traced the statue’s body and were amazed at its detail. "The maker must be so skilled," she nodded in approval and was about to leave when something stopped her.
"The hand," Lucia whispered as she looked back at the statue’s lowered hand. The closer she looked, the more it became human-like.
"Oh god!" Lucia gasped, putting a hand in her mouth in shock. "Don’t tell me... They’re real!" She nervously touched the statue’s hand and felt the bumps and skin texture.
Lucia had many questions in mind, but she could only wish they weren’t made from a real human body.
