Chapter 27: Betrayal of a family
"Scarlet!" Aurora exclaimed with joy as she spotted her best friend. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she extended her arms for a hug.
Scarlet immediately embraced her, instinctively creating space between them and David. David chuckled and moved away, giving them room.
Aurora had never been happier to see someone. Scarlet was finally back. She held onto Scarlet tightly, allowing the tears she had been holding back to flow freely.
Scarlet let her cry and continuously patted her back, offering comfort. She knew Aurora’s plans to escape must have failed, judging by how defeated she looked. But why was she here? She should be in the dungeon if they had caught her.
"Aurora, what happened? Why are you here?" Scarlet asked, and Aurora finally released her from the embrace.
Feeling embarrassed, Aurora avoided eye contact and fiddled with her fingers as she replied, "I couldn’t escape, and things got worse."
Aurora proceeded to explain the details to Scarlet, including the part where she had been forced to sign a contract with the Alpha.
"Why did you sign it?" Scarlet asked angrily.
It seemed clear that signing the contract was a mistake, but what choice did Aurora have? Damien hadn’t given her any space to think it through.
"You should have found a place to hide after signing the contract. I have worked in the mansion long enough to know about Alpha Damien. Even though it might seem like he cares, he’s a complete scumbag who sees women as insignificant vessels," Scarlet said, her words laced with a hint of resentment toward the Alpha. Aurora could tell that Scarlet strongly disliked Damien, but she couldn’t help but wonder why.
"Is he really that bad?" Aurora asked, even though she already had her answers.
"How can a man watch you bleed and simply ignore you? Do you know what kind of men do that?" Scarlet’s words made Aurora gulp as she compared Damien to men who treated women with disrespect.
They were usually tormentors, kidnappers, or slavers. They were not the kind of men who treated women well. But he was an Alpha, he just didn’t care. He couldn’t be a bad person, right? Aurora tried to convince herself, but Damien’s behavior toward her since she had known him wasn’t friendly at all.
He was arrogant, rude, bossy, and heartless. Scarlet was right.
"What should I do now?" Aurora asked.
"I am sure he has tight security around you now that you are essentially his possession. You might be here for the next nine months, Aurora. It might be too late," Scarlet replied, feeling just as helpless as they searched for solutions. As heartless as Damien was, escaping might be a bit too late.
"Let’s get you some rest first. You are badly injured," Scarlet deflected the topic and helped Aurora to her feet as they made their way back to the mansion.
Looking around, they noticed that David had already left. Aurora hoped to properly thank him when she saw him again.
"Hold on, you were supposed to be back the day after tomorrow. Why are you here so early?" Aurora asked, curiosity filling her expression.
"Fortunately, Grandma was discharged, and Gloria is back. I felt there was no need to stay in the same space as her," Aurora understood the growing animosity between Scarlet and her sister, Gloria. If it weren’t for Gloria, Scarlet would be pursuing her dream of becoming a fashion designer instead of working as a maid in the mansion.
Sometimes it was hard to believe what one’s own family could do. Just like Lucas, her own mate, betrayed her. Although Theresa offered to free Scarlet, it was already too late, and the only person who truly loved her, her mother, was dead.
Her father had remarried, and her stepmother and her biological sister conspired against her because a wealthy man wanted to marry her, and Gloria was jealous. Her father, who always believed everything she said, had now been brainwashed by the duo.
Her grandmother, who held all the secrets, had her memories wiped away by her stepmother. So what was the point of returning to a home where she had no place?
If she managed to gather enough money, she would take her grandmother and buy a house for them to live in.
Finally, they arrived back at the mansion. Scarlet tended to Aurora’s wound and left her to rest before going to find Theresa.
Aurora woke up in the evening and was relieved to find herself back in the room she shared with Scarlet, although her belongings had been moved upon Damien’s orders.
Despite their promotion, she and Scarlet had refused to leave the room, as they had many cherished memories there and didn’t want to give it up. Aurora loved the view from the window, while Scarlet adored the bathtub. Theresa had agreed to let them stay.
Suddenly, two maids barged into the room without knocking and began dragging Aurora out.
"Are you both crazy? Let me go!" Aurora screamed at them, trying to free herself from their grasp, but they were determined to carry out their mission.
She was about to ask where they were taking her when she noticed they were heading toward Damien’s room. ’So it’s him,’ she thought with a scoff, deciding to go along with them.
But wait, she was only in her undergarments, and they barely reached her knees. Scarlet must have removed her bloody gown and forgotten to dress her in a new outfit.
She didn’t want Damien to see her half-clothed. "I need to put something on! You can take me back upstairs. I promise!" she pleaded, raising her voice, but it was as if they couldn’t hear her.
They arrived at Damien’s room and threw her inside before locking the door behind them.
The room was dimly lit, with only a single candle burning and the curtains drawn.
As she glanced back at the door and her undergarments, she reached for the doorknob, ready to burst out of the room. But it was locked. ’Those darn maids!’ she cursed inwardly.
"Remove your clothes."
