Chapter 461: Chapter 89: Legal System (5400, thanks to Ma En’s painful desire to do math problems, Silver League!)

Bai Qinghan’s voice was level and bland, one could tell immediately she must have come from the Demon Sect.

An Jing shook his head, "Embracing the Void is so dangerous, what’s wrong with wanting the strong to protect oneself? Da Chen is at fault for acting perversely, that doesn’t mean the people are wrong."

"Furthermore, how could the Demon Sect be any better? Qinghan, we both have been abandoned by Da Chen, but we cannot hold on to resentment; doing so blinds us to the truth."

Bai Qinghan didn’t say much more. She bowed her head and sighed, while An Jing waved his hand, signaling her to leave first, "Time’s about right, let’s have a meal together at home later."

"Mm."

After Bai Qinghan left, Xu Tai rubbed her temples and complained, "Don’t you guys, brother and sister, worry about me at all? You’re not actually planning to silence me, are you?"

"Only you would be afraid of that," An Jing chuckled. He instructed Xu Tai on some work to be done before leisurely adding, "I spring from the Frost Calamity region and was taken away for training by the Demon Sect, they won’t be reassured unless they hear some of my treasonous remarks."

"It’s natural for me to harbor resentment, and given that I am Divine Mandate with strategic value, Da Chen doesn’t care about that; they would rather ’appease’ me."

"Indeed." With that explanation, Xu Tai realized, "It’s the resentful ones who are easier to pacify... Heh, now I don’t have to worry."

"I have never concealed this fact in front of others, if anyone asks, just tell them the truth."

An Jing nodded; seeing that Xu Tai was somewhat unsettled lately, he naturally wouldn’t let her remain anxious.

Letting Xu Tai do as she would, An Jing returned home, finding Bai Qinghan assisting Shen Mubai with what appeared to be cooking.

"It’s rare for you to come back for a meal."

Seeing her son return, Shen Mubai was somewhat surprised, then joyously instructed An Jing to sit down, "Wait a bit, it’s almost ready. Thanks to the trade routes, there are some good things in the city now."

Soon, Shen Mubai brought over a clay pot to the table. Before she even lifted the lid, the rich aroma was evident. Upon opening, the tantalizing scent of meat overwhelmed the senses, even An Jing, who had been focused on cultivation that he hadn’t had a proper meal in a long while, found himself swallowing instinctively.

In the clay pot simmered a pot of red-cooked pork, the sauce-covered red dates and brownish-red pork belly sprinkled with vibrant green scallions were visually tantalizing.

Shen Mubai placed the bowl and chopsticks in front of An Jing, who did not stand on ceremony and picked up a piece to taste. The sauce was salty and slightly sweet, the meat was tender and succulent, slightly crispy on the edges from being seared, which made it chewy rather than melting in the mouth, but that added a distinct caramelized crunch which brought out more flavor as he chewed.

The ’Earth Spirit Beans’ stewed with the red-cooked pork were extremely savory. The high-quality Spirit Plants from the Broken Blade Mountain Blessed Land were mostly sold off, and those that remained in the city lost some flavor due to rapid growth with Su Sheng Ling, but their intrinsic Spirit Qi was only slightly diminished.

Now, soaked in the sauce and flavored, the Spirit Plants not only regained the lost flavors but also exuded their innate nourishing Spirit Qi all the more richly, leaving a fresh aftertaste.

An Jing didn’t say a word but ended up finishing three bowls of rice combined with meat, potatoes, and sauce. Shen Mubai and Bai Qinghan also dined, all without speaking.

"The little Spirit Beast you brought over the other day, I remember you calling it Little Cang? It’s surprisingly obedient. The meat and potatoes were also chopped by it wielding the knife."

After the meal, Shen Mubai didn’t even bother to wash the dishes. An Jing turned his head and saw Little Cang dexterously picking up bowls, plates, and pots, cleaning them at the sink, and exclaimed, "I remember it being a squirrel, how did it learn to wash dishes like a raccoon?"

Noticing An Jing’s gaze, Little Cang scrubbed even harder, as if to say, "Look, Big Brother! I’m working hard!" which made the young man almost chuckle, "Alright, I know you’re hardworking, I won’t mistreat you."

Even though it seemed a bit oppressive for Little Cang to both protect him closely and do household chores, An Jing wasn’t unappreciative. If it could make his mother happy and rest easy, then it was all for the best, Little Cang had indeed found the right approach.

Later, Shen Mubai spoke in a low voice, "I sense that Qinghan seems a bit unhappy, is there a problem?"

"It doesn’t look like a conflict between you two... I’m aware of her past experiences, she’s a bit extreme, but honestly, in this world, being merely extreme is already not bad... Ah, forget it, you must have your own ideas."

"Don’t worry, Mother," An Jing replied calmly, "Xiaobai is just a bit lost... I’ll handle it."

After putting things away, Shen Mubai left with Little Cang, while An Jing took Bai Qinghan out to the courtyard, both gazing at the small courtyard tree laden with snow, "Not happy? Is it because I spoke on behalf of Da Chen?"

"No, I know that Eldest Senior, you were just stating the facts. I’m not unhappy about this... I’m not unhappy..."

Bai Qinghan’s expression grew subtle, "You calling me Qinghan or Xiaobai in private is one thing, but to name a squirrel Little Cang..."

An Jing thought for a moment, realized the similarity, and slapped his forehead, "Alright, from now on I’ll call it Little Silver, or Little Cangwei, it probably doesn’t mind either way."

—That’s not what I meant. My point is, why do you use the same naming format for people and pets?

Bai Qinghan pursed her lips, letting out a sigh, "Okay, I am indeed a bit lost... Because of what you, Eldest Senior, have said, I don’t know which direction to take for the future."

An Jing signaled Bai Qinghan to continue speaking, and the girl steadied herself, gazing at the icicles on the Frost Wood, "Indeed, Da Chen is too powerful, people have no choice at all. Even if they make mistakes a thousand times, people will still choose them."
