Chapter 233: Eredivisie Matchday 8

The cameras panned across the packed AFAS Stadion, the crowd buzzing with anticipation as the Eredivisie matchday 8 fixture was moments away from kickoff.

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows over the pristine pitch, the crisp October air perfect for football.

Inside the commentary booth, the familiar voices of Dutch football filled the broadcast.

[Good afternoon, everyone! Welcome to matchday eight of the Eredivisie season,] the lead commentator, Ronald Meijer, began with enthusiasm. [We’re live from the AFAS Stadion, where second-placed AZ Alkmaar take on FC Twente, just three points behind in third]

Beside him, his co-commentator, Erik van Dijk, nodded, adjusting his headset. [A massive game, Ronald. Both teams have been in excellent form. AZ Alkmaar, of course, looking to keep the pressure on league leaders Ajax, while Twente know a win today puts them level on points]

The camera switched to the team warm-ups, where AZ Alkmaar’s captain, Martin Martens, led the final drills.

[AZ Alkmaar have been a force at home,] Ronald continued. [Unbeaten so far this season, and with their attacking depth, they’ll fancy their chances]

Erik chuckled. [And you can’t forget about their young talents. Adam Maher and Steven Berghuis have been pulling the strings in attacking positions, and that kid Benjamin Rijkaard—what a revelation he’s been!]

[Ah, Benjamin, indeed!] Ronald agreed. [Promoted to the first team just about a month ago, and he’s already making an impact]

The feed cut to the away dugout, where FC Twente’s coach, Steve McClaren, stood with his arms crossed, deep in thought.

[And what about Twente, Erik?] Ronald asked. [Steve McClaren’s side has been resilient this season]

[Absolutely,] Erik replied. [They’ve got experience and discipline. Wout Brama controlling the midfield, and Nacer Chadli—he’s always a threat going forward. AZ Alkmaar’s defense will have to stay sharp]

The stadium announcer’s voice boomed over the speakers, signaling the teams to the tunnel. The crowd’s volume surged.

[Here they come,] Ronald said as the players emerged, the AZ Alkmaar fans erupting in chants and applause.

[Nothing quite like this atmosphere," Erik added. [A top-three clash, a full house, and everything to play for. This should be a cracker!]

The camera zoomed in on the captains exchanging handshakes at the center circle as the players lined up.

The roar of the crowd grew louder as the stadium announcer’s voice carried through the air.

[And now, presenting the starting lineup for AZ Alkmaar!]

A thunderous cheer erupted from the home fans as the cameras panned to the AZ Alkmaar players standing in formation, their expressions focused.

[In goal, wearing number one—Esteban Alvarado!]

[At right-back, number two, Dirk Antoon! Center-backs, number three, Nick Viergever, and number four, Etiënne Reijnen! At left-back, number five, Donny Gorter!]

[In midfield, the holding pair—number six, Viktor Sebastian Elm, and number 17, Maarten Martens! Ahead of them, the creative force—number eight, Markus Henriksen!]

The camera zoomed in on Markus Henriksen, his eyes scanning the field.

[On the right wing, number 22, Steven Berghuis! On the left, number 21, Benjamin Yinka Rijkaard!]

The home supporters clapped and cheered at the mention of Benjamin’s name. His rise had been rapid, and his fearless performances had already made him the top fan favorite.

[And leading the attack—number nine, Josmer Volmy Altidore!]

Altidore rolled his shoulders, his powerful frame poised to cause trouble for Twente’s defense.

[On the bench for AZ Alkmaar today: Beerens, Overtoom, Aron Johannsson, Adam Maher, Jóhann Guðmundsson, Thomas Lam, and Mathias Johansson]

Ronald Meijer chimed in as the cheers settled. [Solid lineup from AZ Alkmaar. We know what to expect from their front four—creativity, pace, and goals]

Erik van Dijk agreed. [But it’s also a well-balanced squad. Elm and Martens offer stability, and that backline—while not the fastest—has been reliable so far this season]

The announcer continued, shifting to the away team.

[And now, the starting eleven for FC Twente!]

The traveling Twente supporters made their presence known, waving red scarves and chanting.

[In goal, number one, Sander Boschker!]

The veteran goalkeeper clapped his gloves together, his experience was invaluable for McClaren’s side.

[At right-back, number two, Roberto Rosales! Center-backs, number three, Peter Wisgerhof, and number four, Andreas Bjelland! At left-back, number five, Robbert Schilder!]

[A three-man midfield today: number six, Wout Brama, number seven, Leroy Fer, and number eight, Denny Landzaat!]

Erik leaned in. [That midfield has everything—power, intelligence, and a wealth of experience]

[On the right wing, number nine, Dušan Tadić! On the left, number ten, Nacer Chadli! And up front, the lone striker—number eleven, Luc Castaignos!]

The Twente fans responded with another wave of cheers.

[And on the bench for FC Twente: Mihaylov, Janssen, Braafheid, Gutiérrez, Cabral, Bulykin, and Breukers]

Ronald exhaled. [Well, Erik, there’s no shortage of firepower in this Twente side either]

[Absolutely,] Erik nodded. [Tadić and Chadli can unlock any defense on their day, and Castaignos is hungry for goals. He’ll be a handful for AZ Alkmaar’s center-backs]

The camera shifted back to the pitch as the referee, Kevin Blom, gathered the captains for the coin toss.

Ronald grinned. [It’s almost time. The atmosphere is electric, the players are ready, and so are we. Eredivisie football under the lights—this is what it’s all about]

Erik chuckled. [Couldn’t have said it better myself. Let’s get this started!]

The stadium roared as the players took their positions on the pitch. The fans of both teams waved their scarves, some singing loudly, and others clapping in rhythm. The energy was electric.

The camera zoomed in on Benjamin, standing in his advanced attacking midfield/inverted winger role just to the left of Altidore.

He bounced lightly on his toes, shaking out his arms while his eyes scanned Twente’s setup. Across from him, Leroy Fer adjusted his socks with a determined look on his face.

Inside the commentary booth, Ronald Meijer leaned closer to his mic.

[And we are set for kickoff here at the AFAS Stadion! AZ Alkmaar in their classic red and white kits, while FC Twente don the all-blue away strip. The referee, Kevin Blom, checks his watch... and we’re underway!]
