Chapter 169: Woodwork Tales 2
The young Dutchman leaped, meeting the ball with a powerful header, aiming it down and toward the corner.
This time, there was no saving it.
The net rippled.
GOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!~
The stadium erupted once more.
[IT’S FOUR!!! AZ ALKMAAR ARE TEARING THEM APART!]
Adam sprinted toward the corner flag with his arms spread wide, his teammates rushing to mob him.
On the touchline, Gertjan Verbeek simply shook his head with a knowing smirk. He had expected nothing less.
[That’s the fourth goal of the night! AZ Alkmaar’s second eleven is on fire!]
The SC Veendam players looked defeated. Maynard crouched, hands on his knees, gasping for air. Nienhuis sat on the ground, staring at the ball inside the net, shaking his head in disbelief.
[You have to feel for Nienhuis,] the co-commentator said. [He’s made some unreal saves tonight, but AZ Alkmaar are just too relentless]
[This is a statement performance,] Mike added. [If there were any doubts about AZ Alkmaar’s attacking prowess, they’ve just erased them]
The camera panned to the scoreboard.
AZ Alkmaar 4-0 SC Veendam, 28th Minute
[And the scary thing is—] the co-commentator chuckled. [There’s still over an hour to play before full-time]
The match restarted with SC Veendam trying to regain some composure.
Their players exchanged a few short passes, attempting to slow the pace and settle back into a rhythm. But AZ Alkmaar weren’t interested in letting up.
[AZ Alkmaar aren’t satisfied with four in this first-half,] Mike noted. [They’re pressing high, still hunting for more]
The SC Veendam backline hesitated for a split second, unsure of their next move, and that was all it took.
Adam pounced, reading the pass before it was even played. With a quick stretch of his leg, he intercepted and immediately turned forward.
[Adam again! He’s been everywhere tonight!]
The SC Veendam defenders backpedaled, but the damage had already been done. AZ Alkmaar had numbers forward, and Adam wasted no time in exploiting the space.
He threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Beerens, who had peeled off his marker on the right flank.
[Look at that pass! Beerens is in acres of space!]
The winger controlled the ball in stride, barely breaking his momentum as he surged into the final third. The crowd rose to their feet, sensing another opportunity.
[SC Veendam are in trouble again! Beerens is flying down the wing!]
Boussaboun, who had endured a torrid night, sprinted across in a desperate attempt to close the gap.
Beerens, ever aware, spotted the challenge coming and shifted the ball to his right at the last moment. Boussaboun lunged—and missed completely.
[Oh, he’s been sent for a hot dog! Beerens just danced past him!]
The AZ Alkmaar winger stormed into the 18 yard box, lifting his head to assess his options.
Aron Jóhannsson was making a darting run to the near post, while Adam lingered just beyond the penalty spot.
Beerens feinted as if to cross low—then cut back sharply onto his left foot. His marker, completely fooled, stumbled as Beerens took a split second to pick his spot.
And then, he let it fly.
A curling effort, bending away from the goalkeeper, heading straight for the far post.
Nienhuis, already moving, leaped across his goal.
[Beerens goes for goal—]
His fingertips made contact, just enough to make a difference.
Nienhuis barely got a touch, but it was enough to send the ball crashing against the post yet again.
CLANG!!!
The rebound spilled right into the middle of the six-yard box. Jóhannsson reacted first, stretching a boot out—
But Ketting somehow got there in time, hooking the ball clear just as Jóhannsson was about to make contact.
[What a clearance! SC Veendam are somehow still holding on!]
The ball fell to Haye, lingering just outside the area. Without hesitation, he lined up a strike and let loose.
A fierce, driven shot, skimming just above the turf—straight toward the bottom corner.
Nienhuis, still regaining his footing, dived full stretch—
AND PARRIED IT AWAY!
[Another incredible save from Nienhuis! He refuses to be beaten again!]
The ball rebounded once more, chaos unfolding in the box.
Adam was there and so was Overtoom.
Bodies clashed, legs swung—
And somehow, SC Veendam managed to scramble it away.
[This is unbelievable! How has that not gone in?!]
The AZ Alkmaar fans groaned in disbelief. On the touchline, Gertjan Verbeek could only chuckle, shaking his head at the sheer madness unfolding before him.
SC Veendam were hanging by a thread.
The ball was launched upfield towards the halfway line, but it was more of a desperate clearance than a composed pass.
SC Veendam needed a breather, but AZ Alkmaar weren’t interested in giving them one.
Haye won the aerial duel in midfield, cushioning a header straight to Guðmundsson.
The winger took a quick glance ahead—his mind already made up before the ball even touched his boot.
[AZ Alkmaar right back on the front foot,] Mike noted. [They’re relentless!]
With a smooth turn, Guðmundsson evaded his marker and drove forward. The space opened up, and his teammates fanned out, stretching the already weary SC Veendam backline.
[Here comes Guðmundsson again—he’s been at the heart of everything tonight,] the co-commentator added. [And look at the movement ahead of him!]
Beerens darted toward the right flank, dragging his marker with him. Jóhannsson made a run between the center-backs, while Adam lurked just outside the 18 yard box, waiting for the perfect moment.
Guðmundsson kept his composure, drawing a defender toward him before slipping a perfectly timed pass into the path of Adam.
[That’s a brilliant pass! Adam’s in a great position here!]
The roaming playmaker didn’t hesitate. He took one touch to set himself, then unleashed a vicious shot toward goal.
The ball flew like a rocket—low, powerful, and precise.
Nienhuis reacted instantly, diving to his right with everything he had.
The goalkeeper’s fingertips brushed the ball just enough to push it onto the post for the fourth time tonight.
CLANG!!!
The crowd erupted, half of them in disbelief, the other half in agony mixed with relief.
