Chapter 692: Chapter 656: Investigating the Fox Spirit, Wishing You a Happy Centenary (2 updates)
After the exams, Chloe began her winter vacation.
Time flew by quickly.
Yvette Foster’s belly was growing day by day, and by the beginning of next year, the twins would be born.
Adam Stephens had been spending more and more time attending social engagements lately.
After the last explanation, Yvette Foster didn’t blame or doubt Adam at all.
She had complete trust in him.
"Chloe, your brother has been in the Dark City for quite a while too. Find someone to send him a message and tell him to come home for the New Year," Yvette Foster, who was knitting a sweater, said softly to Chloe, who was eating an apple.
Chloe took another bite of her apple and continued watching a palace intrigue drama.
When a certain concubine in the drama was killed by a conspiracy, Chloe finally turned to Yvette and said, "I’m planning to go in and check on the patients too."
"You mean your Uncle Cheng?" Yvette Foster asked upon hearing this, "How is your Uncle Cheng’s condition?"
"Nearly time to wake him up," Chloe hadn’t been in for two months since she last came out, and Pierce Stephens and Charlotte Richardson were quite patient, not sending anyone out to look for her.
"Are you sure?" Yvette Foster said, "Chloe, don’t force yourself if you’re not sure. If you hurt yourself trying to save him, I’d rather you be a heartless person."
Chloe blinked and looked at Yvette and said, "It’s just a small matter."
"Don’t overdo it if it’s really difficult," Yvette Foster knew that Chloe was powerful, but in her eyes, a child was still a child, even if she was her daughter.
Don’t blame her for being selfish, all mothers in the world are selfish, favoring their own children.
"I’ll handle it with discretion." After a brief pause, Chloe suddenly asked, "Haven’t you noticed any changes in father lately?"
"Your dad?" Yvette Foster shook her head, her eyes filled with heartache, "In the past, your dad used to go out and socialize to make money, often coming home drunk. Luckily, your dad is an ancient martial artist, as long as he uses his strength to digest the alcohol before getting drunk, he won’t easily get drunk."
"Something is different between then and now," Chloe directly asked, "Don’t you suspect Father is cheating?"
"W-what?"
She hadn’t thought of that.
When her daughter suddenly asked this question, Yvette Foster was also stunned.
"It seems you really trust him," noticing this, Chloe completely understood.
"Your dad knows his limits and wouldn’t do anything to hurt me," Yvette Foster gently stroked her round belly, although she was now an ancient martial artist too, carrying twins was still somewhat uncomfortable, "Now that I’m pregnant, he’s even less likely to do that."
"You can never guess what’s in a person’s heart, especially a man’s. It changes easily. Trust him if you want, but I didn’t say anything," Chloe thought if even Adam cheated, their previous love would become a big joke.
Yvette Foster gave a bitter smile, "Chloe, what’s wrong with you today?"
She wouldn’t normally say such things.
"I’ll go get ready," Chloe went upstairs.
Just when she left, the front door opened, and Adam Stevens came back with a strong smell of alcohol and fragrance in the air.
This time the scent was particularly intense, making Yvette Foster feel a little nauseous when she smelled it.
Adam loosened his tie and walked over to give Yvette Foster a hug, "Were my sons good today?"
"Very good," Yvette Foster frowned, "Adam, go wash this alcohol smell off of you first."
"Did I make you uncomfortable?" Adam backed away quickly, "I’ll clean myself up right away!"
Yvette Foster stared at his retreating figure as he walked upstairs, her mind flashing back to what her daughter had said earlier. She couldn’t help but follow him upstairs to their bedroom and saw the clothes scattered on the floor. Yvette Foster shook her head, struggling to pick them up.
As soon as she touched them, she saw several red marks on the collar, a white shirt, very obvious traces.
The first time she heard Adam’s explanation, she hadn’t paid much attention to it, thinking it was just a scheming woman at the company who left the marks to provoke discord between husband and wife.
Once was forgivable, but what about this time?
Was it because stains had been splashed on the spot again, and they had to clean them up?
She had always trusted Adam’s character.
But at this moment, Yvette Foster suddenly wavered.
She clenched the shirt in her hand and then threw it back to its original place, pretending that nothing had happened.
However, Yvette Foster quickly knocked on Chloe’s door.
Chloe told her to go in and sit down before talking.
"Chloe, there might be a real vixen around your dad’s side, and now that I look like this, I can’t snoop around him. I’m worried that asking directly would fall into their trap."
"So, do you want me to ask or investigate?"
From Yvette Foster’s appearance, it seemed she had just witnessed something.
Yvette gritted her teeth and said, "Investigate, but do it secretly, without your dad knowing."
"I’ll have someone follow him."
"Who?"
"My brother."
"Alex? Isn’t he in Dark City?" Yvette asked in surprise.
"He left Dark City," Chloe had just received a call from Alex, saying that he and Paul Wrigley had left Dark City and were currently having a late-night snack with some people outside. The call just now was to invite Chloe to join them.
Chloe had just declined when Yvette knocked on the door.
"It’s perfect timing for him to stay home for New Year’s, and you should go to Dark City and come back quickly," Since Alex was back, it would be more convenient for him to handle this matter. "It’s better for your brother to handle this than for a girl like you."
Chloe thought it must have been an ordinary vixen, Alex should be able to handle it. He had been with Adam Stephens for so long that he would know better about the people in the company.
After informing Alex of the matter and making a call, Chloe entered Dark City overnight.
*
Alex reluctantly put down his mobile phone and said to Paul Wrigley who was sitting across from him, "She just asked me to investigate a woman."
"A woman?" Paul Wrigley had been active in Dark City for many years, rarely venturing out.
So, his knowledge of the outside world was limited.
Alex said, "There are many social gatherings at Stephens Group, and my father often takes people out for drinks. It might be a woman with ulterior motives who left a trace on my father’s clothes. Aunt Foster suspects my father of having an affair and wants me to investigate it as soon as possible so as not to create suspicion between the couple."
Paul Wrigley frowned, "Just for that?"
A simple little thing, why go to such lengths, wouldn’t it be better just to ask directly?
"What do you mean just for that? This is a big deal," Alex glanced at Paul Wrigley, "Forget it, you won’t understand."
"If there’s something, just speak your mind, isn’t that better?"
"When it comes to matters of the heart, things can get complicated. You haven’t been in love, so you won’t understand how a seemingly small thing might actually be the fuse that can destroy a family."
Alex looked at him, still with a puzzled expression, and was rendered somewhat speechless, "Let’s not talk about this. Finish eating and go back to the Stephens home with me, or stay outside."
Paul Wrigley said, "My duty is to protect you closely."
Just as Alex was about to say something, a woman’s voice suddenly came from beside him, "Hey handsome, my friend has been watching you for a while, could you add her on Whatsapp?"
As she said this, the woman looked towards her friend’s table.
The two young women sitting there both waved at them, and both were quite good-looking.
Alex looked at Paul Wrigley with some interest.
Then he heard Paul Wrigley say coldly, "I have no interest in women."
"Huh?" The young woman blinked before suddenly looking at Alex.
The young woman’s gaze made Alex’s scalp tingle, what kind of look was that?
The young woman’s eyes sparkled with excitement!
"Well, wishing you both one hundred years of happiness! We will quietly root for you! Keep it up!"
After saying this, the young woman hurriedly returned to her table to share the news with her friends, only to see the three women constantly peeping and occasionally bursting into cheerful laughter.
Alex: "???"
Paul Wrigley was also confused.
As they left, both were still in a dazed state.
"Albert Webb?"
Alex was about to open the car door to the taxi and leave when he suddenly saw someone heading away in the crowd ahead. He frowned, closed the car door, and quickly caught up.
Paul Wrigley followed closely behind.
