Chapter 19: 018: Reprimand
Bai Xue took her little daughter out for a stroll. Of course, Old Mrs. Ye, who lived in the same room, noticed it, but she stayed in the East Room with Ye Ling and never went out, like air.
A dreamless night.
The next morning was the twenty-ninth day, and every household was preparing the dishes needed for New Year’s Eve tomorrow. However, there was no activity in the courtyard households. In the morning, Ye He Ping called home, saying that on New Year’s Eve, he wanted the family to go to the company and spend it with employees who couldn’t return home.
This was one of the reasons why Ye He Ping chose not to teach at school and worked here. One reason was due to the serious mistake of having an extra child as a teacher back then. On the other hand, this company was the only private company now, with excellent benefits that surpassed regular formal jobs. The holiday benefits were even better than those of industrial enterprises, and the innovative research and development of the company attracted talented people. Being able to work here was enviable for anyone aware of the company’s strength.
However, there was a downside: the company’s military-like management, coupled with research and development, meant good salary and benefits, but employees often stayed at the company. This was why the company established the family courtyard to gather families together, allowing employees to focus on research and development.
Bai Xue liked this because it saved money. After all, New Year expenses couldn’t be as frugal as usual, so she had to buy meat and eggs. But with the current family situation, they had to stretch every penny, making Bai Xue reluctant to spend on food.
Fortunately, her husband’s call reassured Bai Xue, so she waited for the company car to take them to the company tomorrow. Over the years, Old Mrs. Ye and Ye Ling came to the city for New Year only twice, whereas Bai Xue usually took her little daughter to the company. Now with the elder daughter and mother-in-law also going, Bai Xue had new concerns.
Her mother-in-law and elder daughter dressed too shabbily, which would disgrace them. Fortunately, new clothes had already been purchased for them the day before, which was fine for now. The remaining worry was the elder daughter’s temperament, and Bai Xue was genuinely concerned that she might cause some trouble.
This time the families from the logistics side were all going to the company, along with the leaders and their families. Bai Xue always cared about face and naturally hoped they wouldn’t be looked down upon.
Consider one worry gone, another surfaced. Bai Xue sighed in the West Room but felt helpless.
Ye Qian put down the book in her hand, got up from the chair, and leaned into her mother’s arms. "Mom, what’s wrong? Anything troubling you?"
"It’s nothing." Bai Xue tucked her daughter’s hair behind her ear, looking at her with love. "Qianqian, when we go to the company tomorrow for New Year’s Eve, stick close to your sister, okay? Your sister is from the countryside and doesn’t know much. I’m really not at ease. When Mom can’t care for her, could you keep an eye on her for me?"
Ye Qian suspiciously pouted her lips, "Mom, is this what you’re worried about?"
"Silly child, the only thing I can’t rest easy about now is your sister. What else could bother me?"
"Okay, I’ll take care of her tomorrow. But what should I do if she doesn’t listen to me?"
Seeing the troubled expression on her younger daughter’s face, Bai Xue’s heart ached. She made a tough decision, "Forget it, don’t watch over her. If she truly embarrasses herself, it’s her own face she’ll lose. If it makes it difficult for her to marry in the future, that’s her problem. If she doesn’t care for herself, there’s no point in us worrying about it."
"Mom, if we’re staying in the room without going to Grandma’s room, will Grandma be upset?" Ye Qian gently urged, "We’re going to the company for New Year tomorrow, so why not go talk to Grandma now, remind her about what to notice, so she doesn’t end up confused and unaware? She’s at such an age, if she loses face and blames you for not reminding her, you’ll feel wronged, right?"
Bai Xue listened and kept nodding, happily hugging her daughter. "You’re such a thoughtful child. If it weren’t for you, how could I have thought of these things? Okay, I’ll go to your Grandma now."
Ye Qian raised her head with a smile, "Even if I hadn’t said anything, Mom would have come to think about it."
With one sentence, Bai Xue felt increasingly close to her daughter.
Bai Xue went to the East Room, leaving Ye Qian behind.
In the East Room, when Old Mrs. Ye heard her daughter-in-law talking about what to pay attention to for tomorrow’s company New Year celebration, she didn’t complain. After all, it was a good thing. When Bai Xue finished speaking, Old Mrs. Ye finally spoke up.
"Although I’ve lived my life in the countryside and haven’t seen much of the world, I’ve lived long enough to understand things." Old Mrs. Ye listened but still gave her daughter-in-law a hint.
Bai Xue forced a smile, "Mom, now that you’re coming with us to the company, I’m most relieved. It’s said that an old person at home is like having a treasure. For years, He Ping has been asking you to come and live with us, but you refused. Otherwise, we could have discussed and solved home issues together."
Old Mrs. Ye, having formed an opinion about her daughter-in-law, couldn’t be appeased by a few words, her eyelids drooped. "They say when you grow old, you should return to your roots. I’m buried in yellow earth up to my neck, why should I move? My only unfinished wish is Lingzi’s schooling. Once she’s in university, my life won’t have been in vain. Raising a son who works at a company and a granddaughter who goes to college, who in the village doesn’t look up to me? But here in the city, they see me as a countryside old woman, they look over me with disdain."
"In life, how you live, whether happy or not, depends on choosing what you like. Even if I could stay in the city eating and drinking well, I wouldn’t be happy. I feel content eating simple food in the countryside. So, let’s stop talking about me coming to the city. Now that the children are independent, find a job to help out at home. Children with good studies shouldn’t be neglected. Otherwise, they’ll blame us for their whole lives." Old Mrs. Ye was respected in the village, "Money can be earned again, but education is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, something money can’t buy later. Keep an eye on the future, don’t get blinded by petty gains."
"Mom’s right, I’ll discuss it with He Ping. It’s getting late, I’ll go prepare the things we need to bring for New Year’s at the company tomorrow." Bai Xue found an excuse to leave.
Old Mrs. Ye knew she didn’t want to listen but didn’t show any displeasure. She had said what she needed to; her daughter-in-law wasn’t foolish. She was now just waiting for her son to talk to her.
