Chapter 28 - The Thirty-Six Meridian Charts

Chapter 28: The Thirty-Six Meridian Charts

Fang Han continued to unfold the silk scroll. What followed was a dense sequence of characters. As he reached the middle section, illustrations of a human figure suddenly appeared.

It was a woman.

Her appearance was strikingly similar to the jade statue from earlier—as if they were one and the same.

Whoever had drawn this must have been a master painter. With just a few brush strokes, they had not only captured the form and spirit of the figure, but also conveyed an alluring and sensual elegance.

Fang Han paid no attention to that.

Come on! In my past life, what haven’t I seen?

Though the artwork was exquisite, it wasn’t worth his focus now. His attention went straight to the meridian diagrams drawn on the body.

These were the meridian flow diagrams of Northern Darkness Divine Art (北冥神功 Běimíng Shéngōng)!

        • The Twelve Principal Meridians– the six meridians of the hands and the six meridians of the feet.
        • The Eight Extraordinary MeridiansGovernor Vessel (Dūmài), Conception Vessel (Rènmài), Thoroughfare (Chōngmài), Girdle Vessel (Dàimài), Yin Linking (Yīnwéimài), Yang Linking (Yángwéimài), Yin Heel (Yīnqiàomài), and Yang Heel (Yángqiàomài).

With the twelve principal meridians and the eight extraordinary meridians, there were twenty major meridians in total.

Excluding the Governor and Conception vessels, the remaining eighteen meridians each had a pair of illustrations:

        • One Absorption Chart (吸功图 xīgōng tú)– showing how to absorb others’ internal energy.
        • One Storage Chart (贮功图 zhùgōng tú)– showing how to store the energy absorbed.

A total of thirty-six charts!

The Absorption Charts depicted the flow paths used to draw internal energy from others; the Storage Charts showed the meridian routes where the energy was stored and circulated.

In both absorption and storage, there was always a common factor—either the Governor Vessel or Conception Vessel had to be involved as the core bridge of the energy flow.

This meant that the entire set of Twelve Principal + Eight Extraordinary meridians would become the full operational circuit of Northern Darkness Divine Art.

Once mastered, and if all thirty-six charts were practiced to perfection, Northern Darkness would become one complete system. Every limb, trunk, and point of the body—hands, feet, chest, back—would be capable of absorbing inner power!

In the original tale, Duan Yu had disliked martial arts, and furthermore believed this was an evil skill that stole others’ power. Add to that his reverence for the “fairy elder sister” in the illustrations—he didn’t dare defile them by staring too long. As a result, he only half-heartedly practiced two charts:

        • The Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian – Governor Vessel, one Absorption Chart and one Storage Chart.

The rest, he never studied.

Thus, his version of Northern Darkness Divine Art only utilized one-eighteenth of its full potential.

First—it was incomplete.

Second—it could only draw internal energy through direct hand contact.

He couldn’t absorb through the legs, torso, or even the arms—completely limiting its power.

Fang Han didn’t comment on Duan Yu’s behavior. What others choose to do isn’t my concern.

But as for himself—he would settle for nothing less than perfection.

All thirty-six diagrams—he would learn them all!

He quickly skimmed through the content but did not study it in detail yet. Instead, he continued flipping to the latter sections of the scroll.

There was a small blank space dividing the scroll—and then came a collection of footstep diagrams.

They were densely packed—hundreds of them—each annotated with terms like Guimei and Wuwang, surrounded by guiding text and green lines indicating directional flow and sequence.

“Lingbo Weibu” (凌波微步).

The famous lightness technique of the Xiaoyao Sect!

A supreme-level body technique—most martial artists use internal energy when performing lightness skills, but Lingbo Weibu not only consumes no energy, it actually helps accumulate inner power instead.

Now that’s mastery!

Fang Han exhaled slowly, his eyes blazing.

“Northern Darkness Divine Art”… “Lingbo Weibu”…

These two supreme skills—now in his hands!

After decades of regret in his first life—half a lifetime of obsession—Fang Han was now overwhelmed with both excitement and complex emotion.

There were no words to describe it.

He carefully rewrapped the silk scroll and tucked it inside his robe.

Then, searching the chamber, he found another stone doorway and stepped through it.

Inside, he found rows upon rows of bookshelves, each marked with the name of a sect or school.

There were the most famous orthodox sects—

Like Shaolin Sect, Wudang Sect, Emei Sect, Huashan Sect

And there were the great martial families of the land—

Like Dali’s Duan Clan, Gusu’s Murong Clan

Almost all the major martial factions of Song Dynasty China were listed here, and even some foreign ones—though those were few and incomplete.

This was none other than the legendary “Blessed Land of Langhuan” (琅嬛福地 Lánghuán Fúdì)!

In the past, Wuyazi and Li Qiushui had lived in seclusion here, collecting martial arts techniques from across the land.

It was easy to imagine how vast and rich the trove of manuals here once was.

If he could acquire them all—he’d be ridiculously well off.

Unfortunately…

Fang Han sighed with regret.

“All these manuals were cleared out by that Madam Wang long ago.”

That must have happened many years ago.

Even though he had arrived here three or four years earlier than in the first life simulation, the result was still the same—empty shelves and bitter nostalgia.

But Fang Han had already expected this, so he wasn’t too disappointed.

He turned around and exited the chamber, making his way back up.

Cheng Lingsu had been waiting by the cave entrance the whole time. Seeing Fang Han return, her face lit up and her worry disappeared. She stepped forward and gently brushed off dust and cobwebs from his clothes.

She asked softly,

“Brother Fang, how did it go? Did you find what you were looking for?”

Fang Han smiled.

“I did! Everything went smoothly!”

Seeing the joy radiating from Fang Han’s face, Cheng Lingsu couldn’t help but feel happy for him.

“Then shall we leave now…?”

Fang Han gently took her hand.

“No rush. I plan to stay here for a while.”

He had just acquired a divine martial manual—hadn’t even started learning it yet—why wander around?

Cheng Lingsu was slightly surprised, but she didn’t object.

The past month had been full of hardship—traveling through wind and rain, eating in the open, sleeping under the stars. Though she never complained, so long as she could be with Brother Fang, she was content.

Besides…

She glanced around at their surroundings and found herself quietly delighted. This place was stunning—lush flowers, flowing water, fruit-bearing trees.

Compared to traveling hardships, this was heaven.

If she could settle down here with Brother Fang…

Cheng Lingsu blushed slightly at the thought.

Fang Han noticed her rosy cheeks and couldn’t resist planting a kiss on them. He smiled and said,

“Come on, let’s clean up our new place first~”

Though a little embarrassed, Cheng Lingsu was already used to her husband’s affectionate nature. And besides, no one was around to see.

After hearing what Fang Han said, she blinked in surprise and glanced toward the cave entrance.

“You mean… in there?”

“Yep. Come on, follow me.”

Fang Han chuckled and took her hand as they entered the cave together.

Aside from the entrance—which required crouching—the interior was quite spacious.

And since Fang Han had already explored it once earlier, there were no obstacles now.

Very soon, the two of them reached the underground stone chamber once more.

📌 Footnotes:

        1. 北冥神功 (Běimíng Shéngōng)– “Northern Darkness Divine Art.” A fictional martial art technique from Jin Yong’s Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, it allows the practitioner to absorb others’ internal energy and store it within their own meridians. “Beiming” is a Daoist metaphor for the vast, mysterious northern sea.
        1. 三十六图 (sānshíliù tú)– The “Thirty-Six Diagrams” refer to 18 meridians × 2 charts (absorption + storage). This visual system represents full-body capability in inner force manipulation.
        1. 凌波微步 (Língbō Wēibù)– “Lingbo Microstep.” A legendary lightness technique from Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, based on I Ching foot patterns. Allows graceful, evasive movement while enhancing energy instead of consuming it.
        1. 琅嬛福地 (Lánghuán Fúdì)– “Blessed Land of Langhuan.” A hidden sanctuary where martial arts treasures are stored. In wuxia lore, it’s the secret archive of the Xiaoyao Sect.
