Chapter 296: Chapter 289

The night was as dark as ink, and Emily stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, her fingertips unconsciously rubbing the edge of the glass.

The milk in the glass had already cooled.

"Not sleeping yet?"

Carlos emerged from the bathroom, drying his hair. His damp hair fell on his smooth forehead, adding a touch of allure.

"Just thinking about some things."

Emily replied softly, still hesitating about the DNA test.

"Company matters?"

Carlos asked, sounding a bit tired.

Emily turned around, examining Carlos under the warm glow of the bedside lamp. Carlos bore more resemblance to Mrs. Carter and didn’t look much like Evan Palmer.

"No, it’s not about the company."

Emily hesitated, her fingers unconsciously twisting together, "It’s... about a friend."

She suddenly missed the days when she and Carlos would chat over the phone, back then she was Blue Sky, and he was Time, chatting about anything and everything.

But ever since they discovered each other’s identities, they never chatted like that again.

Tonight, Emily inexplicably felt the urge to confide.

Carlos turned his head, his deep eyes fixed on her, waiting for her to continue.

Emily considered her words.

"I have a friend who got married, but recently she found out her partner might be betraying her."

She paused, her throat tightening.

"She’s hesitating about whether to investigate further."

The room fell into silence, Emily could feel Carlos’s gaze sweep across her face.

"Why hesitate?"

Carlos suddenly spoke, his voice low and firm.

"She’s worried the truth will hurt innocent people."

Emily explained.

Carlos spoke quietly, "If betrayal is confirmed, divorce is the only choice."

Carlos’s response was more decisive than she had anticipated.

"Even if... even if there are children?"

She pressed further.

Carlos paused his action of drying his hair and turned around.

The light shone from behind him, casting a shadow over his face, obscuring his expression.

"The foundation of marriage is not children, but loyalty. Without loyalty, there’s no need to preserve the marriage."

His tone was so cold that Emily was convinced she should continue investigating Evan.

"You seem quite concerned about this issue." Carlos took a step closer, his eyes piercing, "Is this ’friend’ actually you?"

Emily’s heart skipped a beat.

She opened her mouth to explain, but the pain she saw in his eyes stopped her.

"No..." she ultimately just shook her head, forcing out a smile, "It’s really just a friend."

Carlos stared at her for a few seconds, then turned and walked towards the study, "Sleep, I’ll go handle some documents."

The sound of the door closing was exceptionally jarring in the quiet bedroom.

Emily lay on the bed, not knowing when she fell asleep.

The next afternoon, in the Carter Clan Group CEO’s office.

Carlos stared at the computer screen but didn’t read a word.

The conversation from last night lingered in his mind.

Emily’s question was too strange, what was she trying to imply?

Was Adam Willow bothering her again?

Or was it...

The reception desk’s call interrupted his thoughts, "The Spicy Hotpot from University Town you requested has been bought."

When Carlos held a paper bag with the "Bob’s Spicy Hotpot" logo, entering the elevator, the receptionist’s gossipy glances made him feel uncomfortable.

Carlos was going to find Emily, this spicy hotpot was from the time he accompanied Emily to University Town.

As he entered Emily’s office, to his surprise, the office was empty.

Carlos left the office with the takeout bag in hand, and just then, he saw the elevator ahead. Emily and Adam Willow walked in, talking and laughing.

Carlos’s fingers tightened, suppressing the anger surging in his heart, he strode towards the trash can with the bag still steaming.

Hovering the bag above the trash can, Carlos hesitated for a second, finally releasing his grip, the food fell into the bin with a dull sound.

The elevator descended to the Carter Clan’s cafeteria.

Emily picked a few dishes, the two of them found a table and sat down. Adam Willow’s eyes lit up seeing the spicy chicken, mapo tofu, and boiled fish—all dishes she used to prepare in his lunchbox.

Adam Willow’s throat moved slightly: "You still remember..."

"The cafeteria has a new Sichuan chef." Emily interrupted him, "Try and see if you like it."

Adam Willow picked up a piece of chicken and put it in his mouth, but his eyes remained glued to Emily’s face.

He had just happened upon Emily and invited her to eat, unexpectedly she accepted.

Since she married Carlos, she hasn’t looked at him directly again.

Now she’s suddenly approaching him, choosing dishes he liked...

"It’s far worse than what you made." He lowered his voice.

Emily’s chopsticks paused mid-air. Ah, she used to indeed be so foolish, bending over backward to prepare various lunches for Adam’s "stomach discomfort."

Emily tugged at the corner of her mouth.

"How is Sophie?"

Adam Willow’s face stiffened, "She... is okay, just shopping all the time, unlike you..."

"Has the vermillion mark turned to mosquito blood?"

Emily chuckled lightly.

Amidst the cafeteria’s noisy chatter, Adam Willow’s expression turned urgent.

"Emily, once I secure the South City project and establish myself in the Carter Clan, I’ll..."

"You’ll do what?"

Emily adopted a gentle smile.

"Adam, don’t be naive.

We are over. Some teas, once cooled, can’t return to their original flavor, no matter how much hot water is added."

Adam Willow’s eyes flashed fiercely, "Is it because of Carlos? Do you think he truly cares about you? He and..."

"Clang!"

Emily "accidentally" knocked over Adam Willow’s teacup, the brown liquid quickly spreading across the table.

Adam Willow hurried to stand and dodge, while she took the opportunity to knock his cup to the floor.

"Sorry!" She bent down to pick it up, the sealed bag in her purse ready, swapping the saliva-dappled cup swiftly.

As she straightened up, she held the prepared replacement.
