Chapter 293: Chapter 286

The door was pushed open, and Carlos walked in.

In a panic, Emily Parker slipped and lost her balance, seemingly about to fall to the ground.

At that moment, a large hand swiftly reached out and firmly supported her waist.

Emily Parker’s heart raced wildly, and she stammered,

"Why did you come in?"

Her hand instinctively shielded the front part of her body, and her ears blushed instantly, as if brushed by flames.

Carlos stood still, his expression calm. He struggled to pull his gaze away from Emily, but the tactile sensation lingered vividly in his palm.

Emily Parker’s skin was delicate and smooth, like almond milk, so fair it nearly glowed.

He was holding a set of Emily’s intimate clothes for changing, given to him by the servants.

It turned out that, having just broken into a sweat, Emily was eager to take a shower and had asked the servants to bring her clothes.

A servant happened to bump into Carlos and casually mentioned that pregnant women around five to six months sometimes have trouble coordinating their limbs and might need assistance while showering.

Upon hearing this, Carlos took the clothes and came in.

Emily’s face reddened even more. She wanted to refuse but at that moment, felt an uncomfortable sensation, a bit of numbness, at her ankle.

She let out a faint moan, her pretty brows knotted like a tangle, and slightly wrinkled her nose.

Carlos noticed her discomfort and looked down at her foot.

He saw slight swelling on the slender ankle, with the skin tinged with a pale bluish hue.

Emily blushed, subconsciously withdrew her foot, and softly said,

"I’ve been standing for a while this afternoon. I’ll be fine with a foot soak."

But Carlos didn’t intend to let her off the hook just yet. He bent down, gently holding her ankle, and placed her foot on his knee.

His gaze was focused and serious, as if facing an important task.

Emily could feel his fingers gently pressing her ankle. Although the technique was clumsy, the pressure was perfectly balanced.

Carlos recalled massage techniques he had looked up online for reducing swelling and gently massaged her while advising,

"Don’t move. I’ll massage it for you; it will feel better soon."

The restroom was extremely quiet; so silent that Emily could almost hear her heartbeat, as if she were holding a small drum within her chest.

"Sis..."

Maria Carter entered the room, hopping merrily like a lively little rabbit.

Her face beamed with excitement, eager to tell Emily that she surprisingly ranked in the top three in the school for this month’s exams!

This had been her long-standing goal, and she was full of anticipation for how surprised Emily would look.

But upon entering the room, Maria froze.

The room was empty, except for the breeze swaying the curtains. She looked around and mumbled disappointedly,

"Where’s Sis?"

Just as she was about to leave, a muffled hum reached her ears.

The sound was low, carrying a hint of restraint, seeming to come from the restroom.

Maria’s curiosity was instantly ignited, her eyes widened like she’d discovered a big secret.

She carefully approached the restroom door and listened intently.

Then, Carlos’s slightly hoarse voice emerged from the restroom,

"Does it feel good?"

Maria’s face suddenly turned crimson, her heartbeat quickened, and her gossipy little eyes sparkled.

Immediately after, a woman’s muffled hum accompanied a slightly complaining tone,

"You’re too light... My foot is numb."

Maria’s cheeks blushed further; she couldn’t help but cover her ears, quietly muttering,

"During the day, my brother lacks self-control.

But it’s understandable; he’s endured several months, and now the kid is stable."

A sly smile crept onto her lips.

"Seems like there’s no need to worry about brother and sister-in-law getting into divorce again."

Maria secretly pondered, wearing a mischievous grin on her face.

She cautiously backed away, fearing being discovered by the two inside.

Once out of the room, she couldn’t wait to tell her mother about this ’important discovery’.

At dinner, Maria sat at the table, her eyes constantly darting between Emily and Carlos, her mouth curled in a sneaky smile.

Emily was puzzled under her gaze, blushing slightly, while Carlos frowned, sensing something odd about his sister.

Finally unable to bear it, Carlos glared at Maria and spoke with reprimanding tone,

"If you’re not eating, then go study early. What kind of look is that?"

He had long noticed the strange looks from his mother and sister, particularly Maria, whose smile seemed to reach her ears, resembling a Nike face.

Maria chuckled more brightly with Carlos’s glare,

"Brother, you’re full and don’t allow others to eat."

Secretly, she criticized him, thinking he was ungrateful!

She, the sister, went to great lengths to ensure he wasn’t abandoned by his sister-in-law.

Mrs. Carter lightly cleared her throat,

"Maria, stop teasing, go on with your meal.

Emily, eat more; you now have to eat for two."

With that, Mrs. Carter served Emily a bowl of soup.

Emily drank the soup quietly, and Carlos looked meaningfully at his son,

"Same goes for you. Emily’s carrying a baby, you should exercise some restraint. Don’t risk harming the child.

I’ll have a family doctor check on Emily later."

Emily’s face instantly turned red, clearly aware of the misunderstanding Mrs. Carter and Maria had.

She was about to explain hastily, but Carlos leisurely served himself a bowl of soup, sipped it, and casually said, "Got it."

Emily blushed even further, glaring fiercely at Carlos, thinking to herself,

"You understand nothing!"

Carlos’s gaze unintentionally swept across the dining table, landing on the empty seat.

His brows furrowed,

"Does Dad frequently not come home for dinner?"

Having lived away, busy with his own career and life, Carlos hardly had the chance to dine with the family, so he naturally was unaware of Evan Palmer’s schedule.

Since moving back to the manor, he slowly realized that dinners often consisted only of his mother facing a full table of dishes, appearing especially lonely.

Mrs. Carter sat at the head position, a faint smile on her face, though her eyes revealed a subtle hint of loneliness.

She gently laid down her chopsticks, her voice soft and mixed with some helplessness,

"Your father has been busy at work lately, often having social engagements, sometimes returning only at midnight."

She paused, then added,

"With you all here, meals have been much livelier."

Emily’s soup-drinking paused, aware that Mrs. Carter probably never realized that Evan Palmer might have another woman outside.
