Chapter 260: Chapter 196: Encounter Again (2)_2

Tang Xi’s brow was slightly furrowed, her gaze never straying from the medical record in her hands. Clutching a pen, her pupils were cool and detached, "If there’s no accident, I’m acquainted with the patient in bed 28. I’ll cover for him first; when his family is contacted, they can reimburse me. If he wakes up, arrange for his transfer to another department immediately. Our emergency room can’t accommodate so many patients."

"You know him?"

"Sort of. Can’t just let him die here, right?"

Fang Wenqing looked at Tang Xi, who claimed to know the patient, but her pupils were cold, her attitude indifferent. As if... she knew him but wasn’t close. Fang Wenqing nodded, "Alright then. Lu Xue, you keep trying to reach their family. I’ll go to the operating room to see if they need help. Tang Xi, you take care of these patients in the ER, and deal with any emergencies that arise immediately."

"Mhm."

"Understood!"

Tang Xi handed the medical record to the nurse’s station and began her rounds, stopping when she reached bed 28. She pulled back the curtain and saw a female nurse stepping out, holding a medical tray with blood-stained disinfectant cotton. She must have just finished cleaning the patient’s wounds and changing the dressing.

However, the nurse’s ears were slightly red as she greeted Tang Xi with, "Doctor Tang."

Tang Xi walked over.

This time, she finally saw Fu Tingzhou’s face.

The man’s face in front of her slowly overlapped with the one in her memory.

Still stern, fair complexioned.

Incidents from four years ago surfaced in her mind; she settled in North City thinking she’d never see him again in her life.

Her head began to ache, and her heart felt as though it was being clutched tightly by a large hand.

She stood a meter away from the hospital bed, looking at the man lying on it.

Tang Xi slowly, step by step, walked closer.

She looked at his closed eyes, the white gauze wrapped around his forehead, the IV in the back of his hand. She also looked at that face, which overlapped with one deep in her memories. Over these four years, Tang Xi had dreamt of him many times, waking up startled each time, frightened by the visions of him.

Now, her emotions had settled, calm and numb.

During these four years hiding here, apart from Tang Jingyun, she had made no contact with anyone from North City.

"Fu Tingzhou, how come... you’ve appeared before me again."

She let out a low sigh.

In the air, beneath the thick scent of disinfectant, a faint fragrance of ebony slowly infiltrated her nostrils.

Her fingers slowly clenched tight, knuckles turning pale.

Then Tang Xi turned around, walked out, and drew the curtain shut.

She wore a mask, her gaze numb and indifferent.

-

By evening, a group of people arrived at the hospital’s emergency room.

"My husband is here, how is he doing?"

Tang Xi was eating her meal from a lunchbox at her workstation. Because the ER was busy, especially today, a nurse had helped bring her the food.

Through the glass, she watched the group dressed in black suits approaching.

Suddenly, Tang Xi swallowed the mouthful of rice, wiped her lips with a tissue, and put on her mask.

She stepped out and watched the group heading towards bed 28.

Lu Xue approached, "Doctor Tang, are these the relatives of bed 28? Gosh, they look... very imposing... The man in bed 28, he was wearing a handmade Italian suit, quite expensive. We had to change him out of it for treatment, it got dirty, and we threw it away – it seems he’s a wealthy guy."

In the hospital, gossip was common, especially among the younger nurses. Lu Xue cast a glance at Tang Xi and followed her gaze towards bed 28, then asked in a gossipy whisper, "Doctor Tang, do you know the patient in bed 28? Otherwise, why would you agree to cover his medical expenses?"

"Sort of know him, not closely," replied Tang Xi, aware of Lu Xue’s curiosity, and lightly added, "We’re in for a busy night; both you and I are on the night shift. Better eat something quickly. There are two boxes of biscuits in my cabinet. If you’re hungry later, feel free to have some."

Without any malice, Lu Xue, driven by boredom and curiosity, chuckled, "Got it, Sister Tang Xi. Go on with your work."

"Oh, right." Tang Xi turned back and looked at Lu Xue, "If they ask who covered the medical expenses, say it was you. When it’s reimbursed, give it back to me, and I’ll buy you dinner."

Lu Xue didn’t understand, "Why?"

"Because I don’t like extra trouble," Tang Xi said.
