Chapter 33: Chapter 33: What Are You Pretending To Be?
"Ye Family is bankrupt now; she can’t possibly think we are all unaware and still act like a wealthy heiress, right?"
"Exactly. I’ve always disliked her pretentious airs; every time she came back from home, she’d hand out little favors, as if we were her maids waiting for her charity. Now we finally don’t have to put up with her anymore."
"She got rid of her things, not her mistakes, and besides, even if you throw them away, throw them far away. You threw them at the doorstep; didn’t she see them as soon as she came back? How awkward will it be to keep running into each other after this?"
"You’re right, I’ll go pick them up..."
The sound of talking accompanied by opening the door, when their eyes met, the people inside and outside the door were both stunned.
Ye Li hadn’t expected that the dorm sisters she used to laugh and talk with could turn into mere superficial friendships just because of the Ye Family’s bankruptcy.
Inside, Chengcheng certainly didn’t expect the situation to be so coincidental.
At the bathroom door, Hu Yuting was holding a hairdryer.
On the balcony, Feng Ruoying was holding a clothes pole.
The three of them looked at each other and then at Ye Li, all stunned together.
The air was filled with unspeakable awkwardness.
The next instant, the beautiful lady with long hair and a slender waist inside, Chengcheng, smiled slyly, "Ye Li, no offense, but didn’t we speak the truth? Hasn’t the Ye Family gone bankrupt? Or do you not owe a huge debt?"
As she walked out, she bumped into Ye Li, successfully seeing Ye Li squeeze to one side.
Chengcheng picked up three snack gift boxes from the trash and threw them onto Ye Li’s desk, "Before, you were the Miss Ye, and giving us these things was like feeding small cats and dogs. But now you’re not Miss Ye anymore... what are you pretending for?"
As if her hands were dirty, Chengcheng clapped her hands, turned around, and sat at her own desk, putting on her headphones.
The whooshing sound of the hairdryer in the bathroom.
The splashing of water on the balcony.
Ye Li looked around the dorm room where she had lived for two and a half years, momentarily feeling as if she had walked into the wrong room.
They were classmates, dormitory sisters.
From freshman year to junior year, they attended classes together, ate together, and went shopping on weekends.
Afraid that they would feel uncomfortable with her as a wealthy miss, she always brought them small gifts every weekend when she came back from home.
Sometimes it was cookies baked by her mother.
Or perfume, scarves, and small accessories she brought back from overseas exhibitions.
They say the college campus is the last pure land before one graduates and enters society, and Ye Li truly cared about this sisterly bond with her classmates and roommates.
She just hadn’t expected that it was all her own wishful thinking.
She had never felt so upset even when she realized she had been schemed against by Zhou Hecchen outside the bar. Ye Li pinched her palm to fight back the sourness in her eyes and took a deep breath as she entered.
Bang!
The door slammed shut violently, prompting Chengcheng to instinctively look back.
Belatedly realizing she was wearing headphones, she sheepishly turned her head back.
"Chengcheng..."
When Ye Li spoke, Hu Yuting pretending to dry her hair and Feng Ruoying washing clothes on the balcony both stopped and watched.
Ye Li looked around, "From the first day of freshman year when I moved into this dorm, I treated you all as sisters. My clothes, bags, skincare products—anything you wanted to wear or use, you could just take. I had no idea that in your hearts, you regarded yourself as little animals like small cats or dogs."
Apologizing silently to the adorable cats and dogs in her heart, Ye Li told them, "Since that’s the case, let’s make things clear today. You disdain my snacks and gifts; fine, I won’t impose anymore. The jewelry, bags, and clothes you took from me before, please return them... they were only lent to you, I never said I was giving them to you."
Their expressions subtly changed.
Of them all, Chengcheng’s face looked the worst.
