Chapter 397: Chapter 397 After a Woman Becomes a Mother
Cai Minjun looked at Li Jiajia and said, "Sorry, I ignored you again just now."
Li Jiajia smiled faintly.
Cai Minjun’s apology was sincere, but it didn’t mean he could change next time. He liked her, but he loved his three children more.
Li Jiajia knew that no matter how hard she tried, it was impossible to make his three children like her.
So, she never forced herself. She treated them as strangers living under the same roof. Anyway, they didn’t need her as their stepmother to take care of them.
Sure enough, Cai Minjun’s next words were: "They’re still young; you shouldn’t hold it against them."
"I won’t. You’re their father, after all, so you have to spend more time with them."
Cai Minjun said, "Don’t you like sports cars? I’ve already reached out to Tie Niu about getting one custom-made for you."
Li Jiajia chuckled and asked, "Is this as compensation for my generosity?"
"Partly. But most importantly, because I like you." Cai Minjun took her hand.
Cai Minjun was an outstanding entrepreneur. He knew how to win hearts—how to make Li Jiajia so devoted to him yet willing to endure the isolation from his children.
Li Jiajia truly liked cars; lately, she’d gotten into racing. She was always able to get what she wanted from Cai Minjun.
It was simply a matter of mutual need.
They talked for a while on their way, but since there was a driver in the front seat, they couldn’t discuss private matters.
Once they arrived at the company, Cai Minjun got busy. There were two meetings in the morning, a municipal leadership meeting in the afternoon, and a business engagement to attend in the evening.
Lunch was with several executives—having lunch while discussing work, followed by a quick half-hour break. Dinner was a business meal; for someone of his stature, the details of the meal didn’t matter, or whether he ate at all sometimes went unnoticed.
By the time everything was done, it was late at night.
Thus, although Li Jiajia was his personal bodyguard, she hardly got chances to talk to him, let alone nurture their relationship.
Their relationship had essentially been established before marriage. Now that she was his, it wasn’t worth investing further emotion.
Until the night.
That evening, they stayed in a business suite at a hotel, and in the middle of the night, there was an intimacy between them.
He liked her young body; she liked his maturity.
Besides, at just over forty, he hadn’t lost too much to younger men in that department, while Li Jiajia wasn’t demanding about such things—having it was fine, not having it was also fine.
He never forgot precautions during critical moments.
In the heat of the moment, Li Jiajia murmured, "Darling, why don’t we have another child?"
In that instant, Cai Minjun paused, his rationality seemingly returning.
"We’ll talk about it when the time is right," Cai Minjun brushed her off before continuing fervently.
It was clear he didn’t want to give her a child.
...
Su Meixi gradually became more experienced at taking care of her baby.
After the postpartum confinement period, every day spent with the baby became a joy.
Gradually, she found herself unable to leave the baby.
She even felt that having the baby made her husband seem somewhat dispensable. Sometimes, when Gu Wei wanted to be intimate, she would resist, always using the baby as an excuse: "No, you’ll wake the baby."
"Dear, is the baby hungry? I need to make him some formula."
"You haven’t showered; go shower now. There are too many viruses out there—don’t bring them in from outside."
"..." Gu Wei was left helpless.
No wonder many people said that marriage was the graveyard of love. Actually, the graveyard wasn’t marriage—it was children.
Gu Wei couldn’t help feeling unhappy. He thought that Su Meixi shouldn’t neglect him just for the baby.
Sometimes he saw her staring at the baby all day long, as though the child were an Immortal incarnate.
"Honey, don’t you love me anymore? I feel like your love for Xiao Zhao has surpassed your love for me." He couldn’t help but complain.
Su Meixi shot back, "How old are you? Why are you competing with a child? Isn’t he worth loving? Isn’t he your son? He’s so small—why shouldn’t I spoil him more?"
Gu Wei had heard that even after marriage, couples should take some time to enjoy life as a pair—to keep the love alive.
He tentatively suggested, "Honey, how about we let Mom take care of Xiao Zhao for a few days and go on a trip together?"
"Are you crazy?" Su Meixi looked at Gu Wei in disbelief, "Xiao Zhao is less than two months old, and you’re willing to ditch him?"
Gu Wei was startled by Su Meixi’s reaction.
He hadn’t expected her to respond so strongly.
He quickly explained, "I’m just worried you’re getting bored staying home all the time."
"What boredom? My maternity leave only lasts a few months; afterward, I’ll have to go back to work. Of course, I need to cherish this time with him."
Thinking about how she wouldn’t be able to be with Xiao Zhao while working, Su Meixi instinctively hugged him tightly to her chest.
She sighed, "I wish I could give you the best things in the world."
Gu Wei suddenly felt a bit redundant.
Oh well, he should just do what’s expected of him and take good care of his wife and child.
...
On the next day, Gu Wei did something unusual—he joined a work gathering.
Gathering a few married, child-having men, he wanted to talk about family matters with them.
But men discussing such topics always risked sounding overly sentimental.
So, he approached the topic subtly, first asking Xiao Li at work, "Xiao Li, I remember you have a two-year-old, right? Who took care of the baby when they were younger?"
"His mom took care of him. Why?"
"When his mom was taking care of him, did she ever hold him nonstop, like she couldn’t let go?" Gu Wei asked.
Around here, workplace folks were sharp enough to get the hint: Gu Wei must be feeling neglected at home!
Xiao Li immediately replied, "It’s strange, isn’t it? Women become mothers and pour all their energy into the child. My wife used to love dressing up, going shopping, and getting her nails done. But after having our child, she doesn’t shop anymore, doesn’t do her nails, doesn’t even bother with her hair. She’s gained weight but doesn’t care, yet dresses up the kid like a trendy icon. Last month, military jackets were all the rage—she bought our son one too, even though it’s totally unsuitable for this area."
The others chimed in: "My wife’s the same way. But mine’s stopped dressing up because looking after the kid leaves her exhausted."
"Women are peculiar, though—they always complain about how tiring it is to take care of the child, saying it’s too much work. But when you suggest they rest for a few days and let someone else take over, they suddenly can’t trust anyone. Even when there’s no danger, they’ll say the dad poses the biggest risk—they don’t even trust their husbands in this."
"..."
Gu Wei listened carefully to their words, deep in thought.
