Chapter 371: Chapter 371: Become His Girlfriend After Losing Weight?
Dang Li didn’t know how to explain things to Mr. and Mrs. Liang, so she sat on the balcony for a while.
When she came back, she found that everyone at the dining table was already full, and a few older sisters were tidying up the table.
The third sister apologized to her, saying, "Xiao Li, according to tradition, when we return to our mother’s home, it’s customary not to help with the dishes. So for this meal, it looks like you’ll have to do them. Sorry about that!"
Dang Li suddenly felt a rush of anger.
She had an urge to flip the table.
Thankfully, at that moment, Liang Zhanbai noticed her displeasure and stepped forward, saying, "I’ll help Xiao Li wash the dishes."
Only then did Dang Li manage to suppress her anger.
Liang Zhanbai carried the dishes into the kitchen, and he and Dang Li started washing them together, chatting as they worked. Liang Zhanbai was taking the lead—each time he finished scrubbing a bowl, he would hand it to Xi Wanfen. "This one’s ready, you can rinse it."
Dang Li felt touched and said, "Zhan Bai, you really spoil me."
Liang Zhanbai smiled. "You traveled so far to come to my family for New Year’s, and my family has you doing everything—that’s tough on you, not fair to you."
"I don’t mind," Dang Li said. "If we really get married someday, I hope you’ll still treat me this well. I can handle hardship and effort, but you have to appreciate me."
"Of course I appreciate you." Liang Zhanbai took a bit of dish soap foam and smeared it on Dang Li’s face.
"Oh, so now you’re teasing me?" Dang Li retaliated, playing along, and the two of them laughed and horsed around in the kitchen for a while.
But soon Mrs. Liang walked in. "What’s taking you two so long just to wash some dishes? Once you’re done, come out quickly."
This was coming from Mr. Liang, who couldn’t stand young people flaunting their affection in the house.
Dang Li felt a wave of grievance at that moment.
Now she fully understood that what the Liang family wanted in a daughter-in-law was someone hardworking, capable, dignified, and obedient—someone who would toil silently without complaints, ideally without showing emotions, just focused on the work.
Someone like Mrs. Liang, perhaps, who had endured her days as a daughter-in-law before "graduating" to the rank of mother-in-law and earning just a sliver of authority.
But even then, most of her authority seemed to be merely voicing Mr. Liang’s opinions. He was, after all, the true head of the household.
...
By the second day of the New Year, Xi Wanfen had started a new livestream.
She always streamed from a setup inside a mall—it immediately made viewers aware there was a physical store backing the business.
After streaming for an hour, during a brief water break, she noticed Qiu Shuai was outside watching her.
She thought to herself: What is he doing here?
Maybe he was just passing by.
Not dwelling on it, she focused on her professionalism and didn’t even acknowledge him, continuing her livestream seamlessly.
She removed one jacket and put on a pink one, but viewers in the livestream chat said they wanted to see the yellow one again. She promptly switched back to yellow, explaining and showcasing it thoroughly, over and over, maintaining her infectious smile the entire time.
Her smile was sincerely captivating, like a warm spring breeze, and some people even called her "Miss Cutie" in the live comments while she affectionately referred to them as "Baby."
With her baby-like round face, she looked almost like a kid herself, endearing enough to keep even non-buyers watching for a while longer.
Xi Wanfen didn’t just talk about the clothes; she greeted viewers with New Year wishes, chit-chatted about local customs, asked how others spent their New Year—like what they ate or if they visited relatives.
Occasionally, viewers would send her virtual gifts, but she would urge them not to and remind them it wasn’t necessary. If they wanted to buy her clothes, they could; otherwise, virtual gifts weren’t needed—she would even turn off the gifting feature.
Qiu Shuai stood outside watching Xi Wanfen, completely absorbed.
"Xiao Fen, there’s a heavyset guy outside who’s been staring at you for ages," a colleague warned her right after she ended the livestream.
She glanced over casually and saw that Qiu Shuai was indeed still there.
She changed back into her own clothes and walked over to him.
"It’s New Year—what are you doing here?" Xi Wanfen asked.
Qiu Shuai chuckled. "I felt bored, went out for a walk, and happened to bump into you."
"Then why were you staring for so long?"
"Because you’re good-looking." Qiu Shuai replied bluntly.
"Good-looking or not, you shouldn’t stare so much—people might think you’re a creep." Xi Wanfen raised an eyebrow at him. "Or maybe you actually are?"
Qiu Shuai protested, "If I were really a creep, I’d have made a move on you already—why would I wait this long?"
"I’m going to eat now." Xi Wanfen had been streaming for three hours and was famished.
"I’m hungry too. Let me treat you to a meal?"
"Who needs you to treat me? I’ve got my own money." Xiao Fen clearly wasn’t willing to take favors from him.
"Then can I tag along at least?" Qiu Shuai shamelessly requested.
"...Alright." Xi Wanfen didn’t refuse. "Let’s go to the Five Grains Fish Noodles upstairs."
Upstairs was a small food court with a Five Grains Fish Noodles shop, where a meal cost only 18 yuan.
Xi Wanfen asked Qiu Shuai, "Can you handle this kind of food?"
"Looking at my size, do I seem like a picky eater to you?"
"One bowl probably won’t be enough for you. Should I order a meat sandwich for you too?"
"Nah, better not. Last time you told me I should lose weight, and I don’t dare eat too much anymore."
"Last time?" Xi Wanfen barely remembered what they had talked about; to her, their conversations were always casual, too unremarkable to stick in her mind.
"At the bar—you said being overweight is bad for health."
"Oh, that time." Xi Wanfen responded while paying for the noodles.
Qiu Shuai felt a bit down but, true to his personality, didn’t bottle up his feelings. "You don’t even remember what we talked about—do you want me to lose weight or not?"
"Whether you lose weight should be up to you. If you want to, go for it. If not, then don’t. Why ask me? If I say you should, does that mean you’ll actually manage it? Losing weight takes determination."
As she spoke, she found a spot to sit.
Qiu Shuai asked, "You probably don’t like men who are too fat, right?"
"Yeah, I don’t." Xi Wanfen answered honestly, pouring herself a cup of water.
It wasn’t that she hated him—she simply didn’t have feelings for him. When they first met, she had been a little wary of him since he owned a bar, but after getting to know him, she realized he wasn’t scary—just like a mischievous boy from a neighboring class who says what’s on his mind.
Qiu Shuai let his disappointment show for a moment but quickly followed up with, "If losing weight is so hard, then what if I manage to get slim—would you be my girlfriend?"
"Pfft..." Xi Wanfen sprayed a mouthful of water right onto Qiu Shuai’s face.
Qiu Shuai: "..."
He wiped his face with his sleeve.
"Sorry, I didn’t mean to—are you okay?" Xi Wanfen worried he might be angry.
But Qiu Shuai, still cheerful, said, "Your reaction—it shows where you stand, doesn’t it?"
"You’re being ridiculous. Want to lose weight? Just do it—who uses that as a condition for anything?" Xi Wanfen said, still amused.
"Well, can’t you give me some encouragement?" Qiu Shuai said. "Whenever someone told me to lose weight before, I’d just brush it off. But now it’s you saying it—if you give me some incentive, maybe I’ll stick to it."
Xi Wanfen couldn’t stop laughing. She could tell Qiu Shuai had feelings for her, but his weight was unrelated to her. Still, she decided to offer a little "encouragement"—not agreeing to be his girlfriend, but giving him enough motivation to push forward.
