Chapter 347: Chapter 347: Contradiction (2)

The apartment uses a keypad lock. She entered the code to open the door.

It was already 11:30 pm, and the lights were out.

Liang Zhanbai wasn’t there?

She pushed the door open and turned on the lights.

All the doors inside the apartment were open, with no sign of movement; Liang Zhanbai was indeed not at home.

Where could he be at this time?

Xi Wanfen looked around the apartment.

It had been a while since she had last been here. The furniture was still the same as before, but somehow, it felt different.

When it was just the two of them living here before, although things were messy, they were arranged with their favorite items, like various figurines and gym equipment.

Now, the figurines had been pushed into a corner, and the shelves and tables were filled with jars and local products brought by Mrs. Liang.

Items like dried longan, dried figs, and so on.

Inside the kitchen, where it used to be clean because they seldom cooked, there were now various baskets and pots for washing vegetables and even an extra bucket. The already small space now seemed very cramped.

Then their small room, which used to be for gaming, was now cluttered with Mr. Liang and Mrs. Liang’s belongings. They complained that the bed was too small and purchased a folding bed, which made it hard to even turn around once inside.

Back to the master bedroom.

The master bedroom used to be messy, but maybe due to Mrs. Liang’s presence, it had been tidied up very cleanly, especially when opening the wardrobe, where all the clothes had been refolded, even her underwear was arranged very neatly.

Xi Wanfen suddenly felt a tightness in her chest.

If they got married in the future, would Mrs. Liang also come into their room to help fold their clothes?

She didn’t mind someone helping her with chores.

But if while helping, they implied that these tasks should be the wife’s responsibility, she wouldn’t like that.

Xi Wanfen didn’t wait for Liang Zhanbai to return and took out her phone to send him a WeChat message.

She took out her phone but didn’t know what to say for a moment.

If she sent this message, she would be the one initiating reconciliation.

She decided to browse her Moments first.

Her friends consisted of family and colleagues from the hospital.

Unexpectedly, she saw a post in a colleague’s Moments with Liang Zhanbai in it.

This colleague was also a nurse like her.

Besides this nurse, there were several other colleagues from the hospital; it seemed they had organized a gathering to hang out tonight.

The colleague also posted a short video, which she opened.

She saw Liang Zhanbai chatting and laughing with a female doctor, looking very jovial.

Xi Wanfen’s heart ached.

She instinctively closed Moments.

Afterward, she left the apartment, deciding not to wait for him to return.

...

Liang Zhanbai was at a bar drinking.

Actually, there wasn’t much fun in places like this; it was just a way to kill time or to relax after a day’s work.

A close colleague from the hospital noticed he seemed down lately, so they arranged for him to come out and have fun.

The group included a female doctor from the pediatric department of the hospital, who had just become a full-time staff and was a year younger than him. Perhaps because they were close in age and their positions at the hospital were similar, they chatted quite a bit.

The female doctor, named Dang Li, asked him, "Don’t you have a girlfriend? Everyone says you two are a perfect match, and she is even the daughter of some big leader. You are quite lucky; just a few words from your future father-in-law to the hospital leaders and you could get promoted."

When Liang Zhanbai spoke of this, he was clearly unhappy: "I don’t rely on those things."

"Haven’t seen you with your girlfriend recently, have you guys fought? Or is she on night shift? She should be off work by now, aren’t you going to pick her up?"

Liang Zhanbai took a sip of alcohol: "Don’t mention her!"

"Alright, let’s not talk about that." The two then switched to other topics.

They chatted about everything from the universities they attended to mutual acquaintances, getting along famously.

By the time they left the bar, it was already past 1 AM.

Dang Li was a bit drunk, and since everyone had consumed alcohol, the men present suggested that each man should ensure the safe escort of a lady back home.

Some took ride-sharing services, others hailed taxis.

Liang Zhanbai was responsible for taking Dang Li home; he hailed a taxi, helped Dang Li into it, and then got in as well.

Dang Li, also from out of town, was currently renting a place, which was quite close to Liang Zhanbai’s apartment,

In the car, Liang Zhanbai asked the driver to crack the window a bit, as he wanted to sober up.

Before long, he felt his shoulder become heavy.

Dang Li had fallen asleep on his shoulder!

He thought about pushing her away, but just as he did, the car took a turn, and her head ended up back on his shoulder.

Liang Zhanbai, having no other choice, simply let her lean on him.

When they reached Dang Li’s place, he nudged her, "We’re here."

But Dang Li was too drunk to open her eyes, and muttered in confusion, "We’re here?"

Then she continued to sleep.

The driver hurried them, saying it was hard to park long here and they might get fined.

Liang Zhanbai had no choice but to carry her out of the car and then support her as they walked.

"Which floor is your place on? Which building?" he asked.

Dang Li didn’t respond; she seemed unable to even walk steadily.

Liang Zhanbai couldn’t just leave her there, so he went to ask the security guard of the complex.

The security guard was suspicious at first, but Liang Zhanbai left his ID at the security booth: "If I don’t come down in ten minutes, call the police!"

Only then did the guard give him the specific apartment number.

When they arrived at Dang Li’s place, he used her finger to unlock the fingerprint lock and then helped her inside.

He only felt reassured to leave after placing her on the sofa.

...

Xi Wanfen stayed up all night, constantly checking social media.

That colleague later posted another update, but Liang Zhanbai wasn’t seen, presumably the gathering had dispersed.

What would he do after it dispersed?

She stayed up thinking about it until the next day.

The next day, as she went to work, she resolved that no matter what, she would meet him to clarify things and see if they still wanted to be together.

She had thought it through last night: before their marriage, they would each buy their own apartments in the same complex; after marriage, they could live in her apartment, and his could be for his parents. This way, everyone would be close yet without disturbing each other.

If his parents accepted this arrangement, then they could get married.

She seized an opportunity and excitedly rushed to his department to find him.

Just in time, his shift had ended.

Xi Wanfen spotted him at the end of the corridor coming out of the consultation room.

After many days of not seeing him, her heart still fluttered with excitement upon seeing him.

She truly liked him.

Just as she was about to walk over to him, she saw Dang Li emerging from the central elevator, and she immediately stopped Liang Zhanbai.

"Dr. Liang, thank you for taking me home last night."
