Chapter 238: NOW THE GAME BEGINS
Chapter 238: NOW THE GAME BEGINS
The show was about to begin, and Mattie had been secluded in a separate room. Her fist clenched around her phone frustrated.
Seeing comments on the internet praising Astrid for how nice she is despite how evil Mattie had always been toward her.
"Astrid you bitch!" she yelled slamming her phone on the desk, "I just need to abort this child, I promise you Astrid I will make you pay."
She stared at her bruised body in the mirror and she couldn’t help but bite her tongue in frustration. She was a fool to have trusted Stephan, he had made life a living mess for her and not even Miles was trying to help her.
The door opened and she quickly put on her jacket, "Good evening ma’am we are in charge of you." She looked back at them and rolled her eyes.
"Where is Maren? She is the one I want." Mattie told them.
The stylist, who seemed unbothered by Mattie’s situation, said, "Ma’am Miss Maren had told us to come dress you, if you are not going to cooperate, then maybe you should leave."
"Excuse me?" Mattie let out in shock.
But the first lady scored in return with no single trace of fear in her eyes,
"You are not a good choice of model for our company with your current scandal," another answered.
Mattie was taken aback by their words. She stood up in furry, "How dare you talk to me like that?" she yelped.
But the stylist sneered at her. "Gone are the days when you were feared and respected. You are not even relevant anymore."
Mattie’s anger boiled over, and she was about to slap the stylist when Hannett, Maren’s assistant, walked into the room.
Mattie’s expression changed, and she saw her"Good you are here. I want you to fire these incompetent stylists!"
But the lead stylist snorted at Mattie. "What right do you have to fire us?" she asked.
"I have every right. And I want you gone from this company.." Mattie barked out fiercely.
Hannett nodded in agreement, not arguing with her, and turned to the stylists. "You’re fired. Get out."
The stylists quickly gathered their things and left the room, without a single plea. When they were gone Mattie turned to Hannett.
"Now, bring me another stylist. And make sure they are competent this time, make sure Maren is with them also."
Hannett folded her hands, a hint of a smile on her face. "You are being quite rude, Mattie. You fired the only stylist in our company who was willing to work with you just now so I don’t think there would be any willing to do so anymore."
Mattie’s anger flared up again. "What?"
"Yeah, you heard me right... since you are powerful go get yourself the stylist that would work for you," Hannett explained rudely to her.
"You are just an assistant. Don’t forget your place." Mattie warned and Hannett’s expression turned cold.
"I am Miss Maren’s assistant, and I won’t be disrespected by you. You’re a powerful model, Mattie, but you’re not above everyone else including me."
Mattie’s eyes narrowed, and she took a step closer to Hannett. "I will deal with you later," she hissed. "Now, bring me Maren."
Hannett raised an eyebrow "Find her yourself," with which she turned to leave, but Mattie’s voice stopped her.
"Don’t think you can just walk away from me. I will make sure you pay for your insolence."
Hannett’s expression didn’t change, "I am shaking in my boots, Mattie." This was the last straw for Mattie. She stormed toward her about to slap her but the door pushed open and Maren walked into the room.
Mattie looked toward the door and her hand dropped immediately, "Finally you are here, what a rude girl you have as an assistant." Mattie spat out.
Maren strolled toward them, and her eyes met with Hannette who held irritation. "Hannette please excuse us"
Hannette nodded her head and with another glare at Mattie, she finally walked out.
Maren’s eyes then locked onto Mattie’s, "I am here now, Mattie. What’s going on?"
Mattie’s expression crumpled, and she fell to her knees instantly.
She pulled off her jacket, revealing her bruised arms.
"Please hide these marks for me, " she pleaded, leaving Maren still at a loss for words.
Maren’s expression softened as she looked at Mattie’s bruised arms now having worry laced in her eyes "How did you get these?" she asked.
Mattie’s eyes dropped, and she whispered, "Stephan."
Maren’s eyes widened in shock, but she tried to hide her concern.
"Maybe you shouldn’t perform today," she suggested gently. "You are pregnant, and with these bruises...it’s not safe."
Mattie shook her head vehemently. "No, I need to do this. I need more brand work. I have been doing everything right, diet and all...and my pregnancy isn’t showing yet. I will do my best."
Maren stared at her, sadness etched on her face. Even though she wasn’t in support of Mattie anymore she couldn’t just let her be.
After all, she is the sister of her boyfriend. She had so once used Mattie to get ahead, to gain favor with her brother. Now, she felt a pang of guilt.
"Fine," Maren said finally. "I will help you cover the bruises. But if you’re not staying well in the marriage...don’t die for him, Mattie." She advised me like a big sister.
Mattie’s eyes flashed with fear. She knew Stephan had her trapped, she couldn’t leave this marriage anymore he had a lot of her secrets that would destroy her. But she couldn’t let Maren see her weakness.
"I will," she lied and Maren nodded her head, already feeling sorry for her if only she knew what Astrid had installed for her tonight.
Finally, after almost an hour, Maren was done covering up her bruises, and the stylist was called back inside to help Mattie proceed with getting dressed.
The dresses she was supposed to wear were being arranged, and Mattie stared at them confused. They were not Maren’s style, and she wanted to ask why, but Maren stopped her.
"Is there a problem?" Maren asked, her voice firm but polite.
Mattie hesitated, unsure of how to respond. But before she could say anything, Maren continued.
"If you have a problem with the dresses, then you don’t have to force yourself. We can find something else."
Mattie felt a surge of frustration, but she pushed it down. She didn’t want to cause any more problems. "No, it’s fine," she said finally. "I will be okay with it."
Maren nodded, "They should be able to complete the rest, I need to attend to other models." with that she left:
Mattie closed her eyes, still getting her makeup finished. But just as she was starting to relax, a familiar voice called out to her.
"You look so pretty, even though you are pregnant," the voice said.
Mattie’s eyelashes opened, recognizing that voice, "What are you doing here?" she fired glaring at Astrid.
The stylist immediately smiled at Astrid, who was looking stunning in her dress.
The gown she wore was a work of art, a masterpiece of silk and lace that hugged Astrid’s curves in all the right places.
The color was a deep, rich blue that brought out the sparkle in Astrid’s eyes. The dress was sleeveless, showcasing Astrid’s toned arms, and the neckline was high, framing her face perfectly. One could tell Maren had put so much effort into this dress.
Mattie admired Astrid’s dress having the look of envy on. Astrid was looking so beautiful that one would think she was an angel.
Astrid then told the stylist to please excuse them, the moment they stepped out Mattie fired another question at her.
"Haven’t you done enough?" Mattie asked, But Astrid smiled, dropping the bottle of water she had on her dressing table.
"I am concerned about my cousin’s sister," she said. "But it seems I have crossed a line. I am sorry." she turned pretending to leave but Mattie pulled Astrid back.
"You can enjoy every single happiness you have now," Mattie spat. "But don’t forget that I am going to retaliate for every single thing I have been through."
Astrid eyes glinted with amusement pleased with the way she pissed Mattie off.
"But I only wanted to make sure that you are doing fine. I heard Stephan is abusing you."
Mattie’s eyes flashed with anger, pushing Astrid away
"It’s none of your business." Astrid’s smile never wavered, "Okay... I tried my best though." With that, Astrid turned and left.
"You! I will get you!" Mattie cried out frustrated then she picked up the bottle of water Astrid had dropped on the desk gulping it down.
Astrid, who had seen this, gently shut the door behind her with a smirk.
Just then, Maren appeared beside her, handing her a burner phone. "Now the game begins," she mumbled as her hands tapped across her keyboard.
