Chapter 139: LEAVING

Astrid stood with her back to the door, her eyes scanning the room as tears welled up at the sides. She had made up her mind, and nothing was going to change it.

The door swung open, and she didn’t bother turning around to see who it was. She had already texted Maren about her decision to leave and she expected to see her here.

"Astrid," Maren called out in shock, her voice echoing through the room. Astrid slowly turned around, her eyes meeting Maren’s.

"He still wants you, you shouldn’t have made a decision," Maren advised, taking a step closer to Astrid.

Astrid shook her head, her long hair swaying gently. "It’s time I give them both the chance and allow them to be with each other," She said, her voice firm but laced with a hint of sadness.

Maren grabbed Astrid’s hands, trying to convince her to stay. "Astrid, come on... you love him, you can’t just leave. She doesn’t even deserve to be with him," Maren said, her voice rising in desperation.

Astrid pulled her hands free, her eyes flashing with irritation. "You just need to calm..." Maren started, but Astrid cut her off.

"No, enough of heartbreak, enough of getting hurt. I want to just be with myself," Astrid said her voice firm.

She glanced at Maren, her eyes filled with a mix of sadness and resolve. "I know I am being selfish, but she’s my cousin too. I shouldn’t keep making her feel bad."

Maren’s face fell, and she took a step back, her eyes filled with tears. Astrid turned away, her long leather jacket swirling around her ankles.

She took a deep breath, her shoulders squaring as she prepared to walk away from the only life she had ever known.

"She owns him, she can get him, there is no need for me to fight for the life which is unrequited." She picked up her mum’s scarf and also the box Julian had handed to her.

Recalling her grandfather’s words, she dispelled his contact. Donald on the other hand sat in the living room all

with two detectives.

The picture of his late daughter was passed to them, a black box was handed back to back to Donald.

"What?"

"We couldn’t retrieve it that day, it was the backdrop but it had been deleted for over 24 hours, so we couldn....." Donald sprang up from his chair in fury.

"What the fuck!" he growled, "How come they can’t get it..."

"Mr..." his word was left hanging when the assistant sprinted toward him.

"Boss... Young madam is calling.". He stared at him and then got busted for the detective all to stop talking.

"Hello,"

"Grandpa," she called and he could hear her voice breaking and fist clenched around the phone.

"What did he do this time?"

"I want to leave, I no longer want to be the destruction between my cousin and her man. We can just divorce after a year." She said from the phone and he smiled.

"Where do you want to go, I promise I will make everything work out in your way," Donald said, his voice filled with concern.

Astrid took a deep breath before responding, "Out of the country." She knew it was a hard decision, leaving behind everything and everyone she had ever known.

But she was determined to start anew, without any obligations or debts to anyone.

Donald nodded, "My guard will come to pick you up, you can come live in my villa till everything is ready." Astrid smiled slightly, feeling a sense of relief wash over her.

Maren, who had been quietly observing the conversation, couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness.

She knew Astrid was making a huge decision, one that would change her life forever.

As soon as Donald hung up the phone, Astrid turned to Maren and asked,

"It’s a stupid idea, right?" Maren shook her head, "It’s your choice, you can do what you want."

Astrid nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards her friend.

Maren had always been supportive, and Astrid knew she could count on her, no matter what.

Maren suddenly announced, "You need to heal from your mother’s death. If you don’t want to stay here anymore, it’s a decision I understand."

Astrid’s eyes welled up with tears as she hugged Maren tightly. "Thanks for being considerate. You are one of a kind."

They held each other for a moment, the tension in the room dissipating after a few minutes they both strutted out of the room and found their way to the living room, so she could wait for her grandpa’s men.

Just then, Julian sprinted toward them from the stairs, looking worried.

"Astrid... I... she just told me you came, I swear she kissed me, but it wasn’t what you think." He rushed through his words, not knowing what Astrid was thinking.

Astrid raised an eyebrow, her expression unreadable.

Julian had glanced around the room when he was about to sleep, noticing the open door.

He frowned, knowing he had closed it as he walked in. Someone must have opened it after he left.

When he asked Mattie she teased him telling him about Astrid seeing them and that was when he rushed out in search of her.

"Ast..". She gestured for him to stop with a small smile. "It’s fine, you don’t have to worry, I understand it all now."

She let out, and even though her voice was calm and didn’t show any sign of disturbed, he suddenly didn’t trust her words.

"Is there something wrong?" he asked, his voice barely audible. She shook her head still having that smell that was scaring him.

"There is nothing wrong with me Julian just that I have finally made my decision,"

"What?"

"You don’t have to be worried, it’s a decision that would be very good for the both of us," Just then Mattie appeared by the top of the stairs. Anger emitted from her at the thought that Julian had come to Astrid again.

Astrid’s eyes met Julian’s, and with a sly smile, she moved closer to him. Her hands traced up his neck, and she whispered, "We can both divorce after a year."

Julian’s face lit up with relief, thinking that Astrid was finally understanding him.

But his relief was short-lived as Astrid continued, "But I don’t have to be living here anymore, so you can have the best time with your woman." Julian’s eyes narrowed, and he growled, "What the fuck?" Astrid’s lips brushed against his, silencing him momentarily.

"She’s behind you, don’t you think it will hurt her?" Astrid whispered, her eyes glinting with amusement. Julian didn’t care, he was too caught up in his frustration.

Astrid glanced over at Maren, who was watching the scene unfold. Julian’s face turned red with anger as he demanded.

"Astrid, you’re leaving? Where the heck are you making this rash decision?"

Astrid’s smile never wavered as she replied, "It’s not right etiquette to steal a man that belongs to my cousin." Julian’s face contorted in frustration, and he spluttered, "Astrid, what... what are you talking about?"

Just then, Maren strode down the stairs, a wide smile spreading across her face.

"Cuz, that’s the best decision you ever made. I guess I don’t have to hate you anymore," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Astrid smirked, hearing the strange words coming from her cousin. Julian’s eyes flashed with irritation, and he took a step forward, his fists clenched. "Astrid, what’s going on? You can’t just leave like this."

"Of course... I get to decide to be in a good relationship with my cousin, so this is for the best,"

Astrid said, a hint of sarcasm in her voice. She pulled Maren’s hands and placed them in Julian’s, who stood there, looking dejected.

"I hope you both have the best relationship forever without anyone trying to ruin it," Astrid added, her eyes glinting with amusement.

Maren rolled her eyes at this, clearly unimpressed but excited that she would finally have them to themselves alone.

Just then, the sound of a car horn filled the air, and Astrid smiled.

"Guess Granddad’s men are here to pick me up." Julian’s eyes snapped shut, frustration etched on his face.

He knew there was no going back. Astrid had made up her mind, and her grandfather was already involved.

Maren moved close to Astrid, pulling her into a tight hug. "I will miss you," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Astrid hugged her back, her eyes welling up with tears. "I’ll miss you too."

Maren pulled back, a hint of a smile on her face. "That doesn’t mean you won’t work on your weight when you leave. When you get back, I want to see you a new you."

Astrid smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude towards her cousin. "I will," she promised.

With one last look at Julian and Maren, Astrid turned and walked out of the mansion.

She took a deep breath, feeling a sense of freedom wash over her. She got into the waiting car, and as they drove away, she glanced back at the mansion, a sense of closure washing over her.
